Chapter 237

As we entered my room, the atmosphere shifted. The afternoon sun was shining through the window, making the room bright. It was a complete contrast to the way I was feeling on the inside.

I closed the door behind us, muffling any potential eavesdropping from the guards standing just outside.

"Now, tell us what happened during breakfast," Lucas urged, his eyes fixed on mine.

I took a deep breath, about to recount the events that had unfolded earlier when there was a loud knock at my door.

I jumped, turning to see who had interrupted us.

The door to my room creaked open, revealing Miriam standing in the hallway. She raised an eyebrow at me as she looked at Kendrick and Lucas standing in my room.

"Miss Shana, is everything alright?" she asked curiously.

I nodded, "Yes, Miriam. Everything is fine. Could you please give us some privacy?" I requested, hoping that she would oblige.

She nodded, her expression guarded. "Of course, miss. If you need anything, just call."

As the door closed behind her, I took a quick scan of my room, checking for any signs of possible intrusion.

I wondered how Miriam had come to my room so quickly, but decided to shrug it off.

Satisfied that we were alone, I motioned for Kendrick and Lucas to sit on my bed.

"We'll have to speak quietly and quickly," I warned them, the urgency of our situation palpable. "I don't know how much time she'll give us."

"That's fine," Lucas said with a nod. "Tell us everything you can remember."

I began detailing everything that had transpired at breakfast—the Foxglove, the king's inquiries, and the unsettling propositions he laid before me.

Kendrick and Lucas listened intently, their faces a mixture of shock and disbelief as the tale unfolded. The weight of the truth settled in the room, a heavy presence that lingered in the air.

"They tried to poison you!" Lucas exclaimed in a loud voice, his eyes wide with horror.

"Quiet, Lucas! They were unsuccessful, clearly. It was only a test," I hushed him, glancing nervously at the closed door.

"That was very risky of them," Kendrick remarked, his voice a low murmur. "I didn't think the King would do such a thing, although, I don't blame him."

"You don't blame him? He could've killed Shana!" Lucas's voice was quiet, but there was an urgency in his tone.

"He did what he felt was right," Kendrick came to the King's defense. "It's a good thing Shana is truly the White Wolf and not a scammer. This must've been the fastest way for the King to test her legitimacy."

Lucas's expression remained skeptical, but he seemed to begrudgingly accept the reasoning. "I still think it was too risky. What if something had gone wrong? What if she had been harmed?"

"I understand your concern, Lucas, but we're dealing with powers beyond our understanding. The stakes are high, and the King must ensure the security of the kingdom," Kendrick explained, his gaze shifting between Lucas and me.

I took a deep breath, sensing the weight of responsibility settling on my shoulders. "Regardless of the risk, we can't change what happened. What matters now is how we navigate the path ahead."

Lucas ran a hand through his hair, frustration evident in his expression. "So, what's the plan?"

I shrugged. "I'm not exactly sure what the plan is."

"If you were to agree to the King's terms, what would happen?" Lucas asked concern etched on his face.

I shrugged, uncertainty clouding my thoughts. "I'm not sure. I'll need to ask him. He told me what my schedule would look like, but what about my life at home? I can't just leave it all behind. It's still my life. I need to graduate school and possibly go to college somewhere."

"You need to start thinking about your life differently," Kendrick advised, his tone serious. "You're the White Wolf. You're not who you used to be. Everything is different now."

Kendrick's words lingered in the air, emphasizing the profound shift that had occurred in my life. The weight of the expectations placed upon me was forcing me to reconsider my priorities.

As Lucas and Kendrick exchanged glances, it became clear that the road ahead was going to be full of difficult decisions.

Lucas must've sensed my apprehension because sighed, his eyes searching mine. "Shana, this is a lot to take in. I just want you to be safe. I don't want anything bad to happen to you."

"I appreciate that, Lucas," I said, offering him a small smile. "I don't want anything bad to happen either, but I need to understand what's at stake. Knowledge is power, and right now, I need to arm myself with as much information as possible."

Kendrick leaned forward, his gaze steady. "You're not alone in this, Shana. We'll support you, whatever you decide. But be cautious. The world of royalty can be a treacherous one, and not everyone has your best interests at heart."

"I thought you told us we should respect the Alpha King and do what he says," Lucas spoke with confusion.

"Well, yes. That's before I knew that the King didn't trust us at all. He probably trusts us now, but his actions were a bit extreme. From now on, it's best if we all stay on high alert."

I nodded, finally glad that Kendrick was having some kind of common sense.

The King was more powerful than we imagined and we had no idea what sort of person he was. We didn't know what other tricks he might have up his sleeve or if he could be trusted.

"I agree with Kendrick," I chimed in, my mind racing with the possibilities. "We need to approach this with caution. The Alpha King might have reasons for his actions, but that doesn't mean we should blindly follow his commands. We need to understand the game he's playing and navigate it with care."

Lucas sighed, the weight of the situation evident in his expression. "I just want to make sure you're safe, Shana. If the King is willing to take such risks, who knows what else he might do."

"I appreciate your concern, Lucas," I replied, touched by his genuine worry. "And I want to assure you that I won't make any hasty decisions. We'll proceed carefully, gathering information and assessing the situation before making any choices."

Kendrick stood, his eyes determined. "For now, let's focus on keeping our eyes and ears open. There are a lot of things we don't know and if there's one thing I learned from our tour today, it's that the walls of this palace hold a lot of secrets. Secrets that could lead to answers."

"He's right. You need to be more careful, Shana. You're the reason we're here, and the King knows you're truly the White Wolf now. He might have other plans up his sleeve," Lucas said cautiously.

"Perhaps it's time I confront the King or the Prince and get some more answers," I mused, determination sparking in my eyes. "I can't keep dancing around the shadows. If there's a destiny awaiting me, I want to face it head-on."
