Chapter 186
Maeve’s POV
“You’re saying my father was trying to breed for an Enigma like Burton was?” Xaden asked, his nose flaring as he thought about his father’s deceit. “You’re saying he had an affair?”
I nodded, putting my hand on his arm and giving him a gentle squeeze.
“That’s exactly what I’m saying,” I told him. “It was before Burton of course, and your father banished Eric’s mother. Eric found a letter from her to him, and it made him want to research more and find out who she was and what her ties with him. That’s when he discovered the Red Oak tribe and about what my father did to them. That’s when he found out about me.
I put my hands protectively on my belly; I needed to do what I could to protect my baby. I wanted peace in this world. I wanted the coven and other humans and witches to be able to live in this world without any issues. I wanted them to be able to survive here; like my coven, I wanted peace.
“Okay, so even if Eric had discovered this stuff about him and about you, that doesn’t give him the right to kidnap you and bring you to the most dangerous island in the world. The Lost Island is for criminal, Maeve. You could have gotten seriously hurt.”
I could see the genuine concern and worry in his eyes. I leaned against him knowing that he needed my touch more than anything. He took a deep breath, breathing in my scent and I could feel his body relaxing slightly as he pulled me closer against him. His lips brushing the side of my face as he attempted to calm down his wolf. I knew he needed to ensure that his mate was truly okay after being taken from him so suddenly.
“I wasn’t in any danger,” I whispered after a beat of silence. “He took me to the remaining Red Oak tribe; they are living in an isolated area, protected by magic. Only those with the Red Oak blood can see them. Because my mother and Eric’s mother were part of this tribe, Eric and I have the blood. So, we could see them.”
“What did they want?” He asked, his tone gruff.
“They want my help at obtaining world peace,” I answered honestly. “They want to come here and speak with the King. They only want to live amongst the rest of us and for him to stop this mindless killing.”
“They want to come here?” Xaden asked, his brows raising. “To the capital?”
I nodded.
“They want my help to make it happen,” I admitted.
“Why didn’t they ask Eric to do that?” Xaden asked, his posture stiffening.
“Because Eric isn’t listened to or respected. They think the king will listen to me because I’m carrying the one thing that he wants.” I put my hands on my baby bump and met Xaden’s eyes.
“I don’t trust it,” Xaden murmured. “It could start a war; it could be you directly in the middle of the danger and I won’t allow that to happen.”
I turned to face him, a fire burning in my eyes like no other.
“I have to help them, Xaden. I know it doesn’t seem like it with everything going on, but they are my family,” I told him.
“My father would never go for it. There’s no way he would let those humans into our territory without killing them first,” he told me. “It’s pointless to even try.”
“Then I need to figure out how to get him to agree,” I said simply. “I need to spy and do some research to figure out what I can use as a negotiation. I refuse to use my unborn child as a negotiation tool to him.”
“It’s not a good idea for you to snoop around my father’s affairs,” Xaden said, his eyes darkening. “It’s dangerous and puts everyone else in danger too.”
“I would never jeopardize the Kingdom,” I assured him. “Please, Xaden, you have to trust me here.”
“Of course I trust you, Maeve. But it’s them I don’t trust,” Xaden said, snapping his gaze to my face. “How do you know they are really after your best interest?”
“Because they are my family—”
“I am your family too,” Xaden snapped, silencing me completely. “Can you promise me that this arrangement, this game you are playing, doesn’t put this kingdom, or you in any kind of danger.”
“Yes,” I told him without hesitation. “I wouldn’t put you or the baby in danger, Xaden. Please, just trust me…”
He sighed, taking in a deep, and agitated breath as he sat on the couch beside me, my hand cupping his face gently.
“I don’t like the idea of you helping them, but I’m not going to stop you,” he finally said after a long pause.
I wrapped my arms around him, pressing my lips to him and capturing him in a deep and penetrating kiss. I moaned against his lips as his tongue invaded my mouth and twirled around my tongue, sucking it into his mouth and taking me inch by inch. My heart hammered in my chest as he pulled me into his lap, cradling me against his chest and kissing me as if his life depended on it.
When he broke the kiss to pepper soft kisses down my jawline and down the nape of my neck, I let out a small gasp as he nipped and nibbled on certain parts of my skin, tucking the sensitive flesh into his mouth. I ran my fingers through his hair, pulling myself close to him as he licked the subtle bitemarks on the nape of my neck and brought his lips back to mine, kissing me deeply and possessively. I let myself melt into him, to just be with him for a while because I knew once I started on this mission, there was no going back.
I didn’t tell Xaden everything about my mission; I didn’t tell him about the spellbook I needed to get back, or how I needed to do a little spy work in order to get the information I need. The less Xaden knew about that, the better it would be. But at least now he was semi-aware that I had to spend more time around King Arlan.
I wrapped my legs around his waist, straddling him on the couch. I felt his soft fingers tracing my spine beneath my shirt, riding up my sleep shirt in the process. He pulled the shirt over my head, throwing it to the ground, completely exposing me to his eyes. His eyes darkened as lust consumed him; he took in my naked breasts which were much bigger due to being pregnant. I heard a low growl of approval emerging from the back of his throat.
Xaden wrapped his lips around my nipple and pulled it into his mouth, which also pulled a moan out of my mouth. He continued to nibble and tease my sensitive breasts before his lips found mine again and his kiss was possessive, almost bruising as he took his fill of my mouth, pulling my lips into his mouth and making them nice and swollen.
I gasped as I felt his tongue in my mouth again; he searched my mouth with such hunger and desire that I felt my insides turning into complete mush. He hooked his fingers near my sleep shorts and yanked them down my legs, taking my undies with them. His eyes growled with desire as he took me in, his mouth watering at the very sight.
“Gorgeous,” he growled; I knew from the sound of his voice that he was more wolf than man, but my body responded to him just the same. He started to kiss my inner thighs, making me squirm and pant for more. I needed to feel him against me; I was desperate for that friction.
Then I felt his tongue on my clit, and I thought I was going to fall apart right then and there. I let out a whimper of pleasure as shockwaves coursed through my body. He inserted a family as he toyed with my hole, storing my G-spot, all while sucking my clit into his mouth, making it swell with pleasure.
I arched my back, letting out a soft owl, not wanting to wake or disturb any of the mansion workers, especially not Maggie.
I dug my fingers into the couch cushion, panting for Xaden.
“Cum for me, Maeve,” Xaden said against clit, sending shockwaves of pleasure throughout my body. As if my body only listened to his commands, I came undone, letting out a guttural moan as I did so.
Xaden continued to suck my clit and finger me while I rode out the orgasm. Once my body started to relax, he kissed my clit gently before tailing his lips back up my body and towards my lips. He pressed his lips against mine; the kiss was filled with promise and protectiveness.
“If you have to do this, you need to promise me something,” Xadne said as he nuzzled his face in the nape of my neck, peppering soft kisses to my collarbone.
“What?” I breathed, relaxing into him.
“Promise me you won’t put yourself or our baby in danger,” he whispered, holding me close.
I looked up at him, a small smile tipping the corner of my lips.
“I promise.”
