Chapter 7 Chapter 7
"Mr Leo, welcome." Mrs Scooter said to Nathan after he walked into the house.
She actually felt pity for him as he looked out of place and sleep deprived. She wondered what the problem could be. He was the one that asked for divorce. Then why is he looking disturbed because of what he did?
"Thank you, Rose. You can send someone to the car to get my extra outfits from the car. They need to be dry cleaned." Nathan said.
Since for the past week he has been living in the office, he has exhausted all the extra suits he had in the car. He also had to send his assistant, Jerry, to buy him three more suits, as he only had two in the car.
"It will be done, sir. It was expected actually, since you have been drowning yourself in work for the past few days I presume." Mrs Scooter said with concern.
"Yeah. I had a lot to do." Nathan said.
"Would you also like to have some homemade meals?" Mrs Scooter asked, seeing Nathan looking thinner than he was.
"Yes. That will be great." Nathan said. "I don't want to come to the table. Tell Brooke to bring it to my room." He said and began walking away.
"Sir, the missus is not here." Mrs Scooter said with a knitted brow. She is confused at the moment.
'Did he forget what transpired between him and now his ex-wife?' she thought to herself.
Nathan stopped in his tracks. He turned to Mrs Scooter . "Where is Brooke?" He asked as if he didn't know what had happened.
"Sir, after your argument, she left the following day." Mrs Scooter explained. "I am sorry, I didn't mean to eavesdrop, but you were arguing quite loud the other day."
Nathan did not say a word he turned and continued his steps towards his room. He was surprised to hear Brooke actually left. She really left. With creating a scene or blasting his phone with calls or messages? That was so unlike her.
He could help but wonder what her plan was. Does she have something up her sleeves, or she finally accepted defeat? Did she sign the divorce papers? Those were the questions Nathan had. He can only get it from one person, Brooke.
He walked into the room and the room looked mostly the same. When he walked into the closet, that is when he noticed some of her clothes were not there. But like half of her clothes were still there.
Walking back to the room, that is when he noticed the papers on the bedside table. He walked towards it.
First, it is her wedding ring he saw. His heart raced faster. Then he picked up the divorce papers. A later fell and he picked it up. He went through the letter.
Nathan recalled some of the times Brooke indicated in the letter. They really were close when they were younger. He also can't say what and when it all changed.
However, Nathan was baffled by the note below in the letter:
Like I said in my text message, I don't need alimony. I have signed the divorce papers as you have wanted and marked out the part of the alimony. Also, sorry for the screenshot I sent to you. I just thought you should know, even though it doesn't matter anymore.
"What text and what screenshot?" Nathan said in a sad voice. He then was distracted by the fact that she signed the papers.
"I can't believe she signed the divorce papers." He said looking at the divorce papers. True to her words, she did sign them.
"Good morning, my Love. I love you so much."
Nathan moaned and smiled in his sleep as he felt Brooke's soft voice and kisses on his face. What baffled him was he couldn't say it back. He wanted to say the words but they were stuck in his throat.
Soon, the alarm on his phone began to buzz.
"Brooke, turn it off. I want to sleep in today." Nathan said with his eyes still closed.
"Brooke? Brooke, please turn the alarm off. It's Saturday and I need to rest some more." He added.
The silence he got in response made him open his eyes. He was meat with a cold and empty side of the bed. That was when everything began to crawl back to him.
'Brooke is gone. She signed the divorce papers.' he felt numb once again, after looking at the divorce papers on the bedside table. He remembered she mentioned a text that she sent.
Nathan reached for his phone and began going through it. He checked his text message. Nothing was there. He also checked other apps on the phone that she could have sent a message through. But he couldn't find anything.
So, he decided to call her and ask. However, her phone could not be reached. He then settled on sending her a text message.
Nathan: (Hi Brooke, thank you for signing the divorce papers. I need you to know I am sending the money to your account anyway. By the way, I did not receive any text message from you or screenshot as you have mentioned in your letter. What was it about?)
He sent the text with a heavy heart. He held the phone for a while, waiting for her response. It never came through. He decided to send another.
Nathan: (I know we are now divorced, but we can still be friends, right? For the sake of knowing each other since childhood.)
He sent it again. He left out a breath and lay back on the bed.
Soon, his phone began to ring. He was quick to sit up, knowing it would be Brooke. But to his disappointment, it wasn't her. It was Jennifer.
So for some reason, he didn't want to talk to her at the moment so he ignored the call. But the phone began to ring again.
‘This is what I want. Yes, it is.’ Nathan thought to himself. But he wondered, why was he not feeling relieved or happy about it?
