Emma

« Ne m'oublie pas, Emma », la voix de Declan résonnait dans mes oreilles, me tirant violemment du sommeil une fois de plus. Je me redressai d'un bond, la poitrine haletante, la peau humide de sueur. Depuis trois ans, ce rêve me hantait—Declan, un homme qui n'existait que dans mon imagination mais qui semblait si réel que ça en faisait mal. Je tenais un journal, y versant chaque détail, me demandant si mon esprit me jouait des tours. Declan était-il une simple invention de mon imagination, ou y avait-il quelque chose de plus profond ? La question me rongeait, nuit après nuit.

En revanche, ma vie éveillée était morne, bien loin de l'intensité surréaliste de mes rêves. Être née dans une famille de bas rang dans notre meute était une malédiction qui pesait sur moi comme un nuage d'orage. La soumission était attendue de moi, ancrée dans ma nature, et je la détestais de toutes mes fibres. Chaque confrontation ressemblait à un piège, et je m'en sortais plus souvent qu'à mon tour, avalant ma colère pour éviter de dépasser les limites. Ce n'était pas facile. Ça ne l'était jamais. Mais c'était la main que la vie m'avait donnée.

Ma famille était un patchwork d'amour et de difficultés. Quatre frères qui faisaient de leur mieux, une mère noyée dans la dépression, et un père dont les dettes de jeu nous laissaient souvent dans la panade. Ils m'aimaient autant qu'ils le pouvaient, de manière imparfaite et défaillante, et j'avais appris très tôt à ne pas trop demander. Demander menait toujours à la déception, et je n'avais pas de place pour plus de cela dans ma vie.

Pourtant, la vie n'était pas entièrement sombre. Tomas Jefferson, le fils aîné de la famille du bêta, était mon petit ami depuis quatre ans. Être avec lui était compliqué, non seulement à cause de qui il était, mais aussi à cause de qui je n'étais pas. Les gens murmuraient dans notre dos, prétendant que Tomas pouvait trouver mieux, que je n'étais pas digne de quelqu'un comme lui. Mais Tomas ne laissait jamais leurs mots l'atteindre. Il les faisait taire avec sa dévotion inébranlable envers moi, prouvant encore et encore que son amour était réel.

Et pourtant, je ne pouvais pas empêcher mon esprit de dériver vers Declan, l'homme mystérieux de mes rêves. Comparer Tomas à lui semblait injuste, voire mal, mais parfois je ne pouvais m'en empêcher. Declan semblait incroyablement parfait, presque irréel, et c'est peut-être pourquoi il n'existait que dans mes rêves. Il était un fantasme que je ne partagerais jamais avec personne—sauf Heather, ma meilleure amie. Même avec elle, je parlais à peine de lui, craignant que vivre dans un monde de rêves ne me fasse passer pour une idiote ou une délirante.

Ce matin-là, alors que la lumière du soleil filtrait à travers les rideaux, je chassai les restes du rêve et attrapai mon téléphone. Depuis deux semaines, Tomas m'évitait, et j'étais à bout. L'inquiétude me rongeait l'estomac comme une douleur persistante. J'avais entendu dire par Heather qu'il avait été aperçu dans les parages, mais elle, comme moi, venait d'une famille de bas rang et n'osait pas l'approcher pour lui demander pourquoi il avait disparu. Dans notre meute, la hiérarchie était tout, et sortir de sa place pouvait signifier une punition. Je ne pouvais pas simplement me rendre chez le bêta pour exiger des réponses. Tomas devait m'inviter, ou je ne pouvais pas y aller du tout.

Prenant une profonde inspiration, je composai son numéro, m'attendant à tomber sur sa messagerie comme tant de fois auparavant. À ma grande surprise, il décrocha dès la première sonnerie. Mon cœur s'emballa en entendant sa voix douce et familière.

"Emma, ça va ?" demanda-t-il, son ton calme et posé.

"Tomas," soufflai-je, un mélange de soulagement et de frustration dans la poitrine. "Deux semaines. Pourquoi ?"

Il soupira, un son doux qui fit se tordre mon estomac. "Je viendrai te voir dès que possible, Emma," dit-il. Avant que je ne puisse insister davantage, j'entendis une voix en arrière-plan—un ami, le pressant de se dépêcher—et puis la ligne se coupa.

Je restai là, fixant le téléphone dans ma main, mes émotions un enchevêtrement de confusion et de douleur. Que faisait Tomas ? Pourquoi me tenait-il à distance ? Il y a six mois, quelque chose avait changé entre nous. Je pensais que nous étions en train de nous retrouver, mais maintenant, j'avais l'impression qu'il m'échappait. J'avais espéré, peut-être naïvement, qu'il m'aurait demandé en mariage à ce jour. Mais chaque fois que je lui parlais de notre avenir, il esquivait la question, me laissant avec plus d'incertitudes que de réponses.

Après avoir pris une douche, j'essayai de me concentrer sur la journée à venir. J'avais un entretien cet après-midi, une autre tentative pour trouver un emploi. Mais mon esprit revenait sans cesse à Tomas. Son comportement était injuste, et j'en avais assez de lui trouver des excuses. Peu importe à quel point il était occupé, disparaître pendant des semaines sans explication n'était pas acceptable.

J'étais fatiguée d'attendre. Fatiguée de me sentir comme si je m'accrochais à quelque chose qui n'avançait pas. Nous étions ensemble depuis quatre ans—quatre longues années—et pourtant, nous étions coincés dans cette impasse. La plupart des couples qui avaient commencé à sortir ensemble en même temps que nous étaient déjà mariés, certains avec des enfants. J'avais maintenant vingt-trois ans, et le poids des années passées ensemble sans progrès pesait lourdement sur mon cœur.

Les gens murmuraient à notre sujet, bien sûr. Ils l'ont toujours fait. Certains prétendaient que j'essayais de grimper l'échelle sociale, en utilisant Tomas pour élever le statut de ma famille. D'autres disaient que je n'étais pas assez bien pour lui, qu'il méritait quelqu'un de son rang. Mais je ne laissais jamais leurs paroles m'atteindre. Tomas m'aimait, et je l'aimais—du moins, je le pensais.

Mais il y avait aussi Declan, l'homme de mes rêves, une ombre planant aux confins de mes pensées. Et je ne pouvais pas me défaire de ce sentiment que mon cœur était tiré dans deux directions différentes—l'une vers la réalité, et l'autre vers un rêve que je ne pouvais pas abandonner.

Je fixai le téléphone longtemps après que Tomas ait raccroché, sa voix résonnant encore dans mes oreilles. Mais juste au moment où je me disais que j'allais arrêter de l'attendre, le visage de Declan—parfait, impossible Declan—apparut dans mon esprit, et le murmure que j'essayais d'oublier revint, bas et obsédant : "Ne m'oublie pas, Emma."
