Chapter 135

Logan

I stare at Emily and I's car that sits in the driveway. Emily is settled into the passenger seat, hands claps over her baby bump as she patiently waits for me to finish up with work. I am growing, impatient by the second, my Beta, Tony, continuing to talk on and on about things that we have already been through before.

I try my best to contain my sounds of annoyance and irritation, the groans vibrating in the back of my throat. I clear my throat and attempt to cover it up, but it seems as if my Beta simply does not notice. He continues to talk and talk and talk while I am stuck here in place.

I thought I was the Alpha. How is it that my Beta is controlling the situation? It's hilarious to me, amusing yet annoying since my wife is waiting very patiently for me in the car.

“Tony,” I groan and shake my head at him, watching as his eyes flicker up to mine, his voice slowly quieting down. “Is there anything that is actually important that we need to discuss? Or am I allowed to leave for my vacation with my wife?”

“Oh!” Tony gulps and shakes his head, bringing his electronic tablet to his chest. “That should be all, sir. I do apologize for holding you back. I just wanted to make for sure that everything was in line and perfect before you left. You know, smooth sailing and all of that.”

“Yeah, I understand,” I nod my head at him and gently pat his shoulder. “Be sure to have a good week while I am away, yeah? You deserve it.”

I push past him and walk down the stairs to the inconspicuous car that Emily and I have rented for the weekend. I listen to the closing of the front door of my house as well as the lock, my Beta quickly scrambling behind me as I get inside of the driver side of the car. Knowing what to do, I roll down the window and turn my head to the side, watching as Tony comes in to view with a couple of items in his hand.

“Alright,” he breathes out, trying to catch his breath, “here are the keys to the car and here are the keys to the rental home. I have already put the address into the GPS for you, the quickest route that has plenty of bathroom access for Emily, and I have already alerted the Neighbors and had them sign nondisclosure agreements so that they would not alert the paparazzi and press of your location.”

“Sounds good, thank you, Tony,” I take the keys from him and quickly start the car. I turned to look at Emily, not paying attention to my Beta as he mumbles says goodbyes, quickly scurrying away. “Are you ready?”

“Yes!” Emily nods excitedly, a bright smile flashing across her face.

My eyes travel down to her baby bump. It has grown so much bigger over the last couple of days, the pregnancy slowly entering into its third and final trimester. I never thought I would be so happy and content in my life, knowing that I had a child on the way with the love of my life.

I had always believed in the idea that I would marry somebody, whether it was true love, or we have grown to love each other, but I never envisioned myself to be a father. To be a man who raises a child in this scary and unhinged world. My family is essentially a pack of vultures and Emily's family is a den of vipers.

No matter where we go, or where we return to, there will always be obstacles like that in the way. It is my job as my child's father, to ensure that they are prepared for any situation that has to come. Until that chaos arrives, though, I want to make for sure that my child has a great childhood and can live a carefree life for the weight of expectation is placed onto their shoulders.

I placed my hand on Emily's stomach. Our baby is very active during the day, always kicKing and moving around. It is such a delight to feel it happen, to have some form of connection with our unborn child since I am not the one carrying it. I'm just so grateful to have this opportunity.

Emily and I drive to the beach home. It is only a couple hours away, not too far from the city in case any kind of emergency happens. We rolled the windows down as soon as we reached the coast, smelling the salty sea air and feeling the warm breeze on our skin.

The beach home is very nice. It is upscale and expensive, but is small and comfortable enough for just two people. After I helped Emily inside, I ordered us some pizza and settled into the back patio with her to watch the ocean waves crash onto the beach. Once the pizza arrived, the two of us settled into a sense of normalcy, apparently forgetting about the dangers of our life that we shared back in the city.

It feels so weird to not constantly worry about the Alpha King campaign, or worry about what Emily's step family is up to next. Now that her father's in jail, the weight has been alleviated — just a small fraction of the weight, though.

Emily laughed at a joke. I tell her. I looked to the side, admiring the way her face scrunch is up from the laugh, watching as her hand immediately drops to her stomach, to feel our child inside of her belly. I smile at her, unable to contain my happiness, and laugh along. After her laughter, settles, she turns to look at me and offers me a kind and warm smile.

“What?” I ask in a chuckle, mimicKing the way she tilts her body towards me and leans against the reclining chair. It just feels so natural with her, so natural and carefree that I do not have to care about what my role is in this world. All I have to care and worry about is if she is smiling and having a good time or not.

“I just…I really appreciate you doing this for me, Logan,” Emily begins. I know in my head, knowing that it was really no problem. “I love that it can be just the two of us in this place with nobody else looKing in.”

“Yeah, me too,” I admit with a sigh. “You know that I would have done this for you in a heartbeat, no matter what. You come first to me. You are above everything else, you know that.”

“I know,” she nods with a smile, “I just really like hearing you say it.”

I throw my head back and laugh. Emily slowly gets up out of her seat and takes a few steps towards me, settling herself in my lap. I immediately wrap my arms around her, enjoying the heavy weight that she place on to me, keeping me trapped in place. It is not like I would rather be anywhere else, though.

“I love you,” she murmurs.

“I love you too,” I smile back at her. I close the distance between us and gently kiss her, not wanting this moment to end.
