Chapter 120
Emily
After I revealed the secret of my pregnancy to Logan, things between us have been very easy. I have remained at home, being able to rest as much as I can, and getting away from the overstimulating office life that I was in. Logan has been so helpful, too, it has been the best doting husband that one could ask for.
About a week has passed. My belly has started to grow, showing through all of the baggy clothing that I have tried to hide it with. I know that I do not need to hide it anymore, that Logan has accepted me and our unborn child, but I can't help but want to hide the news from the rest of the world, wanting this to remain a secret between us.
The two of us sit in the back of an expensive rental car, the blacked out windows, hiding the rest of the world from the inside of the car. Logan holds my hand, our fingers intertwined with one another. He is on the phone with his father, who is already at the Alpha King nomination events that he is holding for his son.
The car slowly pulls up to the house, and Logan hangs up the call, slipping his phone back into his pocket. He turns and smiles at me, getting out of the car before helping me out after. We link our arms together and walk up the stairs, the loud music and chairs from the event echoing down the marble staircase before we reach the event.
We walk inside together, and are immediately greeted by a plethora of people. The event is lavishly decorated in reds, whites, and blues. There are photos of Logan hanging up on the wall along side his campaign slogan of: “Better Together.”
Balloons hang from the ceiling, and the lights are bright yet warm, not blinding. There is a stage in the center of the room, one that the entirety of the event can watch from. I know that's in just a matter of a few hours, Logan will be up on that stage making his first speech as an Alpha King nominee. I have never been proud of him.
We approach a group of people as soon as we step foot into the event. The group is mainly made up of strangers, at least they are strangers to me, and others who wish to support Logan in his bid for becoming the next Alpha King. I smile and nod my head at people, unsure what to do or say as Logan helps me through the room, walking us in the direction of his father and family members.
“Logan,” I breathe his name out before we reach his family, quickly capturing his attention, “are we going to tell your family about the pregnancy?”
“Do you trust me?” his question takes me by surprise. I look up at him and nod, I'm sure what it is that he means by his question, but he simply leans down and whispers into my ear, “I plan on revealing it tonight. I hope that is okay.”
“Of course it is,” I smile up at him, “whatever you want, I want.”
We approach his family, and I give them a small wave, the diamond ring on my finger, reflecting the light of the party. His stepmother barely waved back at me before she turns into her friends who stand beside her. His brothers are barely paying attention, except for Reid, who gives me a slightly dirty look before turning away.
By their demeanor alone, I know that the night is bound to be like this. I am to be ignored by his family while they pretend as if they are proud of their brother and son for beginning this new journey in his life.
Just as expected, the night goes on like this. I remain at Logan’s side, a glass of water in my hand, as I laugh along with people stories about when they first met Logan at the Alpha meetings they attended or at charity events that he was a part of. There are even people who we both have never met before who introduced themselves for the first time, claiming that they are a friend of his father or know of his story and wish to support his campaign.
We barely get time to ourselves, to get the chance to breathe, before we are thrown right back into the wolves den, having to interact with more people than humanly possible. I keep my hand tight on his and give it a squeeze whenever we need to move on, allowing him to be the one to break off the conversation instead of me.
Before I know it, people begin to gather around the stage in the center of the event, Logan and I remaining off to the side as high ranking Alpha and officials make speeches in his honor. It is surreal to think that my husband is going to be a widely known public figure, arguably the most important person in the nation if he wins the campaign race. It is nice to have time to ourselves, listening to the speeches that are being made, away from the constant conversations and eyes of the room.
Suddenly, the attention is thrown right back on to Logan, a Spotlight shining on us as the crowd wrapped into chairs. He turns and looks at me with a smile on his face, pressing a kiss to my cheek before he departs from my side, making his way towards the center stage. I watch as he walks up the stairs and shakes his father's hand, taking the microphone from him.
His speech begins…
“I would like to say thank you to everyone who decided to come tonight. I would like to thank those who took the time out of their day to help set up the event as well as preparing everything that went into making this run smoothly. Without your help, it would not have been done.”
The room, cheers and claps, a few people laughing as they yell you're welcome in Logan's direction.
“I want to keep this both short and simple, not wanting to take up too much of your time and to take you away from the party, but I do want you to know that I will vow to be the best Alpha King that you will ever see. I wish to change and evolve the nation into something spectacular and strong,” logan's voice is reliable and strong. He makes the room feel like they can depend on him.
My husband turns his attention towards me. Our eyes me and I give him a small wave, hoping that it will encourage him to continue his amazing speech.
“I want to make this country safe again. I want it to be safe for all of your families, just like my own. I want it to be a place where you can feel safe and can leave your doors unlocked at night without the fear that somebody will come in and hurt you,” he begins, “I want our country to be a safe space for my wife and I’s child to live as well.”
The room erupts into gasps and murmurs. A few people cheer and yell out a congratulations to Logan while others are simply shocked by the revelation. Even I am surprised that Logan decided to reveal this information at such a public event.
I look towards his father, who stares at me with a look of distaste approval on his face. He begins to walk towards me as Logan thinks the room for attending the event, hoping that his speeches will be much more concise at future events.
I watch as Logan takes this place back at my side, wrapping an arm around me and placing a kiss on the top of my forehead. His father approaches us and shakes my husband's hand, pulling me into a hug, openly congratulating us on our news. I smile at him in the room, wanting to show united front and not one that is ready to be ripped apart because of a stupid contract that we signed all of those months ago.
A lingering feeling of dread forms in my stomach. Right now, I feel like I am on cloud nine, but I also feel as if the world is ready to come tumbling down at a moment’s notice.
