Chapter 112
Logan
Carla's lunch was good. The office has gone, quiet, murmuring amongst themselves while they eat. I stepped back into my office with a plate of food, not ready to eat quite yet since I have some leftover paperwork to do.
My mind wanders back to Emily, though. She had left in such a hurry, claiming that her pack needed her since she is their Alpha. I can only sit here and hope that everything is fine, that her pack is not in trouble. I knew that Philip was not the best Alpha for their pack, and he left it in a state of disarray on purpose after Emily took over the position, but I didn't know that they were in big trouble like this.
I should go to her, right? I should offer her my help, even though she didn't ask for it. It is the least that I can do, especially since I am her husband, and I have to be there for her through thick and thin.
I turn back to the papers on my desk, not really wanting to do the work, but I know that it has to be done sooner or later. I pick up a pen, ready to sign off on contracts and negotiation deals, when the door to my office suddenly opens. Looking up from the stack of papers, I notice Emily walking inside of my office, keeping the door open behind her.
I am shocked to see that she is back so soon. I guess that her pack’s problem wasn't as dire as she made it out to be. I immediately stand for my desk, ready to greet her when another familiar face enters into the room. It is not somebody that works in my office, but rather somebody from my past, someone I haven’t seen in ages.
It's Delilah. I have not seen her in years, not since I was in my early twenties and a stupid kid. My eyes widen at the sight, but I forced myself to relax, acting unfazed as they walk deeper inside of the room. I clear my throat and straighten my posture, crossing my arms over my chest.
From just over their shoulders and through the open door of the office, my office workers’ demeanors have brighten significantly. They smile and openly talk about Delilah, their voice is flooding into the office. My eyes flicker to Emily to see how she is feeling about this and she wears a slightly dejected look on her face, looking as if she is sick and ready to throw up at any moment.
It angers me to know that the people who work for me, do not love and enjoy the company of Emily, my wife, as much as I do. It is frustrating to say the least, especially since Emily has done so much for my pack ever since she has been here. Emily was the one who got rid of corrupted employees who wish to take money from us and to sell us out to other packs, such as Iris.
“Delilah,” I nod my head at her, unsure of what else to say. “Why are you here?”
“I am actually in town for a bit! I just wanted to swing by and see how you were doing, that's all, Logan,” Delilah flashes her signature smile in my direction.
“No other reason?” I ask, doubling down on my suspicion of her being here.
“Yes,” she rolls her eyes at me, looking at Emily for help. Help that Emily does not give her. “There is no other reason why I’m here, okay? Calm down.”
My eyes float back to Emily. She wears a displeased look on her face, one that tells me that she is irritated by Delilah's sudden presence in the office and in our lives. I stepped around my desk and move one of my hands into my pocket, taking my place at emily's side before I wrap my arm around her waist, pulling her closer to me.
Her body physically relaxes into mine. She wraps her arm around my waist, and I give her a gentle squeeze, hoping that it can reassure her that I will not be persuaded back into Delilah's life. That she is, unfortunately, stuck with me until death do us part, the vows that we shared at the altar of our wedding.
“So,” Delilah continues, “I am actually going to be in town for a bit and I was wondering if you needed any help with your pack? I know it is a big favor for me to ask of you, but I would really like to get involved and help you out in any way I can. After all, I did promise you all those years ago that I would be working for you one day.”
Delilah lets out a laugh. I gently squeeze Emily’s side and laugh along with her, silently prompting her to chuckle along despite the awkwardness that forms in the room.
I am hesitant to even agree to her request. I know that my employees enjoy Delilah and the presents that she brings in comparison to Emily, but after everything that Emily and I have been through with one another in the past couple of months, I am unsure if outside help is the right choice to make. Who knows what motives Delilah is hiding and is not telling us.
Just as I am about to respond and decline Delilah's favor, Emily releases me and steps in front of me.
“We would love to have your help around the office. I need somebody to help with my role anyways since I am bouncing between two packs,” Emily speaks. There is a slight possessiveness in her voice when she says the word ‘we’, and she looks back at me with a small smile on her face.
I give her a nod and turn my attention back to Delilah, shoving my hands into my pants pockets. Delilah's smile grows in an instant, the woman clapping her hands together from excitement.
“That’s wonderful news! I am so excited to get started,” Delilah's smile is as bright as her demeanor. She looks between Emily and I before her gaze settles on me once again. “The three of us should have dinner together. Logan and I get to catch up on what we missed in each other's lives and I get to finally meet his wife!”
Emily visibly tenses beside me. Just by looking at her, I know that the smile on her face is forced in fake, something that she shows to people when she doesn't really want to do something. Hell, she even shows it to me whenever I offer up a restaurant for dinner that she doesn't like.
I am unsure, though, if the invitation is something genuine, and if Delilah truly wants to get to catch up with me, or if this is just another rule from the enemies in Emily and I’s lives that wish to see us fail.
“Sure,” I slowly nod my head, swiping my tongue over my teeth, trying not to sound eager yet hesitant, “we could have dinner. We'll get back to you with a time and place, okay?”
“Sounds great!” Delilah says.
“Wonderful,” I respond, “now if you'll excuse me, I would like to walk my wife to the car since she has pack business to attend to.”
Without another word, I placed my hand on emily's back and gently guide her out of the office, leaving Delilah behind.
