Chapter 106
Logan
A Month Later…
I have a meeting with my father in five minutes. It was an unusual request, one made late into the night through text message sent to me by his Beta. I had no choice, but to accept, knowing that whatever it is that he has to say is important and has to be heard, my future as the pack’s Alpha and marriage with Emily dependent on it.
I drove to his home early in the morning, giving Emily a quick kiss goodbye before I had it on my way. Now, I stand in front of his doors, watching as his Beta opens up the doors and allows me inside, handing me a cup of coffee while he takes my jacket.
It has been a long time since I stepped through these doors. The last time I was here, an explosive fights happened that fractured my relationships with my family. I walk through the halls and find myself standing in front of the door to my father's personal study, not being able to bring myself to immediately push inside.
I hesitate, not wanting to step into something that may turn out to be for the worst instead of the better. After taking a deep breath, I stepped through the doors, greeting my father with a nod as I take my place in the chair in front of his desk.
“Logan,” he greets me, his voice as stoic and neutral as it usually is. He effortlessly assert dominance over me, his natural Alpha role coming into play. I can only hope to be as good as him.
“Father,” I greet him back. “you called me last night? Is there something that I can do for you?”
“Logan,” he sits down the papers he holds in his hands, giving me his full attention. My back stiffens. “I want to tell you that I will officially be giving you the title of Alpha. I have spoke about it with a few of the higher ranking members as well as my beta, and we all decided that you are the best person for the job.”
I slowly not along with his words, knowing to not interrupt when he is speaking. To only speak when spoken to. I lean forward, placing my elbows on my knees as I hang onto every word.
“With the recent inheritance that your fiancée, emily, received, we think that it is a strong match now that she is the alpha of her pack. We will be able to have control over the two packs which will prove useful in the future, especially when you are to run as the new Alpha King wants the current one dies.”
A silence falls between us. I simply nod my head and give my father my full attention. My mind can't help but wonder what my future looks like. If I am to truly take control over emily's pack, and if she will allow me to do so. Personally, I think it will be better if she were to run her pack as her mother intended instead of passing off the role to me.
“after your marriage with emily, we will begin your campaign for the Alpha King title,” my father feels in the silence, “I have already contacted a few of my friends who work in political marketing, and public relations to help us give you the best starting places as possible.”
“Okay,” I whisper in response. I know that is going to be hard, that my younger brother and Emily's stepsister are bound to cause more drama than ever before and now that this plan has been sent into motion. I will have to focus on squashing them before they can ruin my future with Emily.
“you are going to need to teach your fiancée how to be a leader, a strong Alpha,” my father continues. “if she does not gain the support of her pack, well, you're going to be in a lot of trouble in trying to obtain the Alpha King position.”
My father's words stuck with me, even as I drove home from his house. I could not bring myself to go back to the office, sending Emily a message to come home as soon as she possibly could. I tried my best to not worry her, to let her know that things are okay, that I just need a break from the office. I know, though, that she is bound to ask me a million questions upon her arrival.
“Logan?” Emily’s voice calls out from the foyer.
I look up from my seat on the couch, sleeves rolled up to my elbows. She enters the room, a worried expression on her face. I packed the seat besides me and move the papers onto the coffee table, giving her my full attention. She sits down, and I take her hands into my own, offering her a small smile.
“how did the talk with your father go?” her question catches me by surprise and yet I feel no sense of shock that she would ask a old question like this.
“it went well,” I nod my head. “he asked me to do something…one that includes you.”
Emily raises an eyebrow. Confusion flickers across her face and I gently squeeze her hands to try and quell the worries that are sure to have blossom inside of her chest. She takes a deep breath and I pull her closer to me.
“My father wants you to learn how to be a great Alpha. He said that it would help me in my campaign for the Alpha King,” I breathe the words out. Her eyes slightly widen, shock written inside of her irises.
Her body tenses against mine. I kiss the top of her head, trying to relax her as much as possible, not wanting to add to her anxiety. She looks up at me with a worried expression.
“What if I can't be a great alpha? What if my dormant wolf prohibits me from being the best alpha that I can be?” the words spill from her mouth at a rapid pace. “What if I can't be the leader that my family’s pack needs me to be?”
“Emily,” I shake my head. I cup her cheeks and can feel the nervousness beneath her ski, the tension that begins to form. “You are going to be an amazing Alpha. You are just and fair and have a great sense of leadership already. You are going to do great things…I will make sure of it.”
“Will you?” she asks, raising an eyebrow. I nod.
“Yes,” I suck in a breath, “I am going to teach you everything that you need to know in order to be a strong Alpha.”
“But my wolf…”
“I know,” I bite the inside of my cheek, hiding my nervousness from her, “it won’t be a problem. We will figure out a way to wake it up, I promise. Do you think you’re ready to do something like this?”
She hesitates to respond. I can see the wheels turning in her eyes, the way she is slowly thinks over all of the information that I presented at her feet. After a minute of waiting, she gives me a nod, confirming that she is ready to take this next step with me. To take the next step in our lives together.
