—Se ha ido —musitó con los dientes apretados, haciendo un esfuerzo sobrehumano para controlarse.

—¿De qué hablas? —preguntó el hombre a su mejor amigo.

—Ella se ha marchado, me ha dejado a las puertas del altar —gruñó, lanzando lo primero que estuvo a su alcance, provocando un estrepitoso estruendo en la sala de la lujosa mansión.

Renato se apartó de su camino cuando otro florero salió disparado y se estrelló contra la pared más cercana.

—Debe haber un error…

—¡Ningún maldito error! ¡Se ha largado sin importarle la vergüenza a la que me expone delante de cientos de invitados! —gritó con enfado contenido.

Renato suspiró.

—Quizá fue mejor que lo hiciera ahora y no después de la boda —se atrevió a decir.

—Nunca en mi vida me he sentido tan burlado como hoy, jamás nadie se atrevió a humillarme tanto y la familia Spencer no será la primera en hacerlo —gruñó Ricardo, destruyendo el pedazo de papel que cambió su vida en un abrir y cerrar de ojos.

—¿Qué quieres decir con eso? —preguntó el hombre ligeramente pálido.

Conocía a Ricardo de toda la vida, habían salido juntos de Brasil cuando apenas eran unos adolescentes. ¡No tenían nada más que sus nombres y la ropa que traían encima cuando llegaron a Los Estados Unidos! —No, pero estoy a punto y te aseguro que los Spencer no querrán conocer mi lado oscuro —gruñó en respuesta. El semblante de Ricardo era tenso, su mandíbula se remarcaba por la presión de sus dientes, dándole un aspecto frío y cruel.

—No necesitas hacer todo esto, Ricardo —insistió Renato.

—Dile que, si no hay boda, lo perderá todo —enfatizó—, también dile que voy a asegurarme que ningún banco le otorgue préstamos —agregó, girando sobre sus talones, dejando a Renato contrariado. ¿Por qué le tocaba a él hacer el trabajo sucio? Por la sencilla razón que era el mejor amigo de Ricardo y en el único hombre en el que confiaba. Así que, se dispuso a cumplir su orden…

El cristal se rompió en cientos de pedazos al estrellarse contra el piso, el vaso había resbalado de la mano de la joven mujer que miraba atónita y con la mandíbula desencajada al hombre delante de ella.

—¿Estás bromeando? —susurró la pregunta, pero supo de inmediato que su tío hablaba muy en serio. Su semblante era frío y sus ojos no tenían ni una pizca de calidez.

—¿No has escuchado lo que tu tío ha dicho? ¿Estás sorda? —las palabras duras de la otra mujer le hicieron girar el rostro.

—He escuchado muy bien las palabras de mi tío, Mabel, y es una locura que no puedo aceptar —argumentó Kate con un nudo en la garganta, su cuerpo temblaba como una hoja ante la mirada afilada de la mujer.

—¿Qué has dicho? —gruñó Jack ante la respuesta de su sobrina.

Kate lo miró, el corazón se le congeló dentro del pecho, aun así, habló.

—Dije que no puedo aceptar lo que me propones, tío. Agradezco todo lo que has hecho por mí durante todos estos años, pero no puedo casarme con un hombre al que no conozco y del cual no estoy enamorada.

Una bofetada cruzó el rostro de la joven ante su respuesta, la mano de Jack se aferró sobre el brazo de Kate, presionó tan fuerte que Kate no pudo evitar gemir de dolor mientras gruesas lágrimas corrían por su mejilla magullada.

—Me haces daño —murmuró.

—Puedo hacerte mucho más daño si no accedes a ocupar el lugar de Ellen…

—No puedes obligarme —musitó con temor, toda la valentía se había esfumado de su corazón al ver la sonrisa cruel de Jack.

—No olvides que me debes la vida y casándote con Ricardo Ferreira será la única manera de que puedas pagarme todo lo que he hecho por ti y por tu abuela…

Kate tembló ante la mención de su abuela.

—¿Aún quieres desafiarme, Kate? —preguntó con una sonrisa cruel— ¿Eres tan valiente para no aceptar casarte por el bien de tu querida abuela?

—¿Por qué me haces esto, tío? —susurró.

—No perderé el negocio con Ferreira por la estupidez de Ellen y menos si tengo el reemplazo que me ha solicitado para continuar con esta boda.

—No seré feliz…

—Me importa un comino si lo eres o no, Kate, sube a tu habitación y vístete de novia. Hoy te casas sí o sí —mencionó sin piedad.

Kate miró al hombre que la había criado desde los diez años, por un momento creyó que Jack sentía algún tipo de amor por ella, quiso creerlo pese a que no tenía ninguna buena experiencia dentro de su familia; desde que llegó fue siempre despreciada por Mabel y Ellen.

—¿Qué esperas para cumplir con las órdenes de tu tío? —preguntó la mujer con el ceño fruncido—. ¿Quieres que llame al hospital para preguntar cómo sigue tu abuela luego de su último infarto?

Era una amenaza y Kate lo sabía, así que, negó con un movimiento de cabeza y subió las escaleras como lo hace un condenado a muerte mientras se preguntaba, ¿qué sería de ella? No tenía el placer de conocer a Ricardo, las veces que el hombre acudió a cenar a la casa, ella fue encerrada en su habitación a petición de Ellen, tan paranoica como siempre, pensaba que Kate podía robarle la atención de Ricardo, como si Kate alguna vez hubiese tenido oportunidad de robarle algo. No era bonita, por lo menos, no en cuanto al estereotipo de mujer a la cual la sociedad llamaba bonita.

Ella era más… terrenal, no tenía una figura de modelo, más bien. Tenía unas bonitas curvas, pechos generosos y un rostro en forma de corazón, recordar que no era de la misma constitución física de Ellen le hizo detenerse en lo más alto de la escalera.

—¿Qué pasa? —preguntó Mabel con molestia al verla girar y titubear.

—No creo que el vestido de Ellen… —ella no pudo terminar la frase al escuchar la risa de burla de su tía política.

—Por supuesto que no hay manera de que entres en un vestido tan perfecto como el de mi hija, pero no te apures, Jack solucionó el pequeño contratiempo, mi esposo es un hombre que se adelanta a todo —aseguró—. Vístete y cúbrete ese asqueroso golpe —añadió la orden sin miramientos.

Kate de repente tuvo una ligera sospecha, pero sus nervios y la conmoción del momento no le permitió analizar la situación, por lo que continuó su camino con el corazón martillando dentro del pecho.

La sensación de frío la acompañó hasta su habitación, sus manos temblaban y sudaban producto de sus nervios. La mirada de Kate se posó en la ventana de su habitación, «escapar no es una opción», se dijo a sí misma al recordar a Carlota, su abuela.

Con resignación posó su mirada sobre la cama, el vestido de novia hecho a medida descansaba sobre ella.

Iba a casarse con un completo extraño, todo lo que conocía de Ricardo Ferreira era lo poco que salía de él en las revistas, ella sabía que era extranjero y que era el dueño de una de las principales fábricas de chocolate del país. ¿Era suficiente para casarse con él? ¡No! No lo era, pero tampoco es que tenía elección. Era su boda con el magnate del chocolate o perder la poca estabilidad económica que tenía para su abuela.

Con manos temblorosas tomó el vestido y se lo colocó por encima de la ropa.
