Chapter 33

Could they seriously not go a day or so without coming to blows?

Right now Draven had the upper hand with a fist full of Adrian's shirt in his hand about to punch him in the face.

What happened to the cold by the books, never did anything wrong at school Draven that she knew?

This new hot headed person was a stranger to her.

Even when he was being a jerk to me before he still didn't break school rules.

“What the hell is wrong with you two?” I asked, beyond annoyed.

Shaking my head I turned and left. Maybe I could ask Lucius if he could do something about them.

Strictly because he's the headmaster and not because I want to see him. I make sure to remind myself as I head over toward the faculty building.

As I reach the building, Lucius walks out and damn if he doesn't look good in his pale grey suit.

“Lucius,” I called out before freezing. Crap, I should probably call him headmaster since he's no longer mentoring me.

“Um, ah, I mean headmaster,” I tried to correct myself, walking up to him,“do you have a minute to talk?”

Lucius lazily glances down at his watch, “yeah, but I'm heading to a meeting.”

“Okay, I'll join you.”

“What did you want to talk about?”

“Ah right, well I was hoping you could do something about Draven and Adrian,” I said, taking in the way the sun hits the side of his face.

“What about them?” Lucius asked, leisurely across campus like he doesn't have a care in the world.

“Their fighting again, or should I say their fighting even more than before,” I explain, worried about them.

“They'll be fine,”he replies, focusing back on the Path ahead, “both have excellent control, so I'm not that worried about exposure.”

“As for themselves getting hurt, it's on them to act recklessly.”

I stop in my tracks, pretty surprised by Lucius' blase attitude about everything.

“That's it?” I asked, taken back, and slightly annoyed.

Lucius nods before checking his watch, "I've got to go now, just focus on your training and leave them to deal with their own stuff.”

After that Lucius hurried off and I just stood there feeling stupid about thinking he'd do something.

I mean if he wouldn't do anything for Me because I asked he should at least keep an eye out because of possible exposure.

Whatever if no one's going to deal with the two idiot brothers then I won't care either. I have a competition to focus on winning.

The following day was the beginning of the preliminary competition. Apparently during the week before the competition, Lucius decided to completely overhaul everything.

So instead of typical relay races, distance runs, marksmanship and ability tests were all traded in for things our headmaster deemed more challenging and more fun.

So, over the next three days I had to do three different types of obstacle courses.

Followed by three different marksmanship tests each utilizing three different weapons.

The first obstacle course utilized the forest terrain of the back mountain to test the contests abilities in agility and stealth.

I made quick work of using the tree cover and thick branches to travel in the trees.

During this first course we were allowed to knock off our competition using any means besides weapons or shifting.

Once I was hidden in the trees I took small fruits and nuts, wrapped them in large leaves and threw them at anyone I spotted.

Making quick work of the others and being hard to reach I quickly completed the first course before the others.

Day two of the preliminaries had one of the instructors with a terrain manipulation ability contort the ground into cracks, peaks, and pitfalls under our feet.

We had to quickly adjust to the changes and use the momentum of the changes to advance forward.

The same rule applied as before, we could obstruct our opponents by regular means not with abilities or shifting.

My starting position had me close to sinking into a pitfall. However, noticing the ground forming a peak nearby I quickly propelled myself forward, grabbing on as the peak shot up.

Once it stopped rising I was able to see the entirety of the course. Making a split second decision I slid down the peak till the space between mine and the next lessioned then pushed off onto it.

After I reached almost the bottom of the third peak I pushed off onto the top of a tree that was falling into a pitfall.

Once more utilizing the leaves and nuts from before I quickly took out the two people closest to me and jumped from the tree.

Sprinting the rest of the distance I weaved my way around the pits and jumped over the cracks, grabbing first place once again.

On the third and final day, the course was set for a water and desert challenge.

To be honest this was probably my least favorite course.

We had to dive into the water terrain, provided by another instructor's ability, to retrieve a designated weapon chosen for each of us.

Then traverse what seemed like sand castle type structures to get to the finish line and fight through sandstone type puppets.

Two more instructors partnered up for the last half, one with the ability to manipulate and create sand the other was able to create puppets out of anything and control them.

Being this course was to test our stamina and strength, the water pressure we had to endure was increased which made it more challenging.

However, I was able to quickly get through the first half. When it came to the sand it proved to be more of a challenge.

To up the difficulty the water had to be first which meant we were all soaked as we climbed over and through the different obstacles.

By the time the first sandstone puppets appeared we were all covered in sand and deeply uncomfortable.

During this challenge regardless of us having weapons, mine being two daggers, we couldn't attack or go after any of the others.

The focus was only to defeat the puppets and reach the end.

Though trying to get through the sandstone proved a challenge I managed to take down four before sprinting to the finish line.

Unfortunately, I ended up placing second instead of first like the others. I still managed to place above Rebecca.

Once her eyes landed on me sitting down finishing off my water, I could practically feel the rage coming off her in waves.

Finally, the day of the semi-finals arrived.

The semi-finals were fights between the top three females and the top three males. The prelim finalists for the females were me, my bestie Cathy, and unfortunately, Rebecca.

The three prelim finalists for the guys were Draven, not surprising, the sandy Blonde guy with glasses from A Class, Chris, and the muscled guy I took down during combat training class a while ago.

Noticing that Adrian wasn't competing I was a bit sad, I knew he worked really hard.

However, I'm not too surprised considering his and Dravens increased fighting before the competition.

We were paired up Draven and Cathy, Rebecca and Chris, while I was matched with muscles for brains again.

To be honest, the matches did last very long. Draven quickly overpowered Cathy, pinning her to the ground.

Rebecca roundhouse kicked Chris in the chest which knocked him down, and he lost his glasses.

Rebecca being Rebecca, took advantage and landed her final blow knocking him unconscious.

I traded blows with Mr muscles for a few minutes before I charged at him.

Using his weight against him I quickly wrapped my legs around his head and used momentum and core strength to flip him down to the ground, quickly pinning him.

Once everything was done, and the finalists announced the fifth day of the competition came to a close.

Besides getting glared at by Rebecca the whole time I had a blast. So, grabbing my bag, I was heading to my dorm when Lucius found me.

Rebecca's POV

How could she beat me?

I couldn’t believe Adrian had been training her too.

Now even Draven is acting weird, and I know it's because of her.

Standing a little ways away was Katie and our headmaster.

Well isn't this interesting?

It seemed a bit weird that she got so good at all this otherworldly stuff so fast.

Could it be something more going on under the surface?

I smirk, quickly pulling out my phone. Snapping several pictures of the two close individuals I can't help but think my luck might be changing.

I quietly back away, hurrying to my room to pull up the school's online forum.

“Just wait and see how popular you'll be tomorrow Katie.”
