Chapter 30

Before I knew it, days had passed since I joined A Class. It was kind of weird how easily I was able to adjust to everything. Training and combat classes were kind of thrilling to be honest.

I really enjoyed being able to spar with my classmates and see just how different each of our fighting styles were. I even have to admit, sparring with Draven had actually been pretty fun.

Now, I won’t tell him that but what can I say the way we were able to match up against each other so well was pretty awesome. I’d only been going up against my trainers and Lucius before I fully joined A Class, and I was always getting my ass handed to me.

Then the match with meathead was over so damn quick, it was kind of boring. So, being able to go blow to blow with Draven was so different that if I happened to let a smile or two slip, well what can you do.

Sadly, I haven’t been able to match up with Draven during class, when it counts but we’ve still spared a couple times. This new dynamic we have going is pretty dangerous for me, it’s making me hope that we just might be able to become friends, or at least decent siblings.

Anyway, today was an exciting day. The A Classes annual comprehensive ability competition was only a week away. I had only heard about it two days ago during a brief conversation with Lucius.

Apparently, this competition is similar to sports day that we had like a month or so ago. But, this is strictly only for A Class students.

It consists of a relay, strength completions where you have to see who can throw this sharp spear weapon.

Then there is an arrangement of marksman ship tasks, where you have to show your skills with five mystery weapons.

We have the classic marathons though the distance is way further than a human could ever run, and the winners are based on the lowest time.

We also have ability centered challenges where you have to use specific abilities to complete them, fastest one to complete all five takes first place.

But the best part of this competition is that the winners from each challenge get prizes, and being its A Class, the prizes are big.

Though a lot are the same as the prices from sports day just with a higher dollar amount.

The grand prize for the overall competition winner, is first pick at any affiliate company that Lupine works with to get a paid internship once you graduate.

That is like the ultimate prize and something I desperately want. So, to say I'm pumped up for this compilation is an understatement.

Which is what brings me back to what's going on right now. All of A Class is getting divided into male and female groups.

Each person who wants to participate in the final competition for the grand prize, has to place in the top three against their group, then they will go to the main competition arean for the finals.

As I was listening to the instruction going over the finer details of the competition I swept my gaze over all the other students. Some seemed eager to show off their skills during the competition, others were just in it for the prizes.

But I didn’t pay them any mind. It’s not like I thought I was a god's gift to the world and would obviously win. No, I just knew that the only thing I can control is myself and how I go about preparing for the competition.

When the instructor told us to pair up and find a sparring partner to train with in preparation for the competition, I found myself trying to spot Draven among the other students.

“Damn, no luck,” I muttered to myself, “did he skip?”

Trying to dwell on the fact that Draven isn’t around to be my partner I look for Cathy. Spotting her across the training grounds, I head towards her when my paths are suddenly blocked by a tall, dark, and annoying asshole.

“What do you want Adrian,” I asked annoyed.

“Well no need to bite, little sister,” Adrian said lowering his voice just for me to hear the address, “looking for our worthless older brother?”

I glare at him, not even two seconds of conversation with him and I already want to sock him in the face.

“Not that it’s your business but no I wasn’t,” I lied, choosing to act like I was just focused on finding someone to partner with.

“Good to hear,” Adiran said, smirking at me, “I was wondering if you’d be up to partnering up before the competition?”

“Um, no,” I said, flat out before moving to go find Cathy across the grounds.

Blocking me again Adrian’s dark eye bore down on me, his arms crossed, with his little smirk on full display, amused.

“Come on,” Adrian said, his tone carrying a hint of childish begging, like he thinks acting cute is going to work on me, “seriously Katie, partner with me.”

“What part of no don’t you understand?” I asked, my frustration mounting, I don’t find someone soon, I’ll end up stuck as his partner even though I don’t want to be.

“Why do you want to partner up with me anyway? Doesn’t your whole “bad boy” act hinge on the fact that you do give a crap about anything, especially school?”

Sighing he rubs his hand across his face, his cocky smirk falling as he looks at me seriously.

“Look I’m kind of failing all my other classes, and I really need some help,” Adrian said, the first time I’m seeing him be serious about anything.

“Could you like, tutor me and I’ll help with the training for the competition?”

I look him over, part of me very suspicious that he would propose something like this so out of the blue. Especially considering we rarely ever talk or interact unless he wants to piss off Draven.

“Ah,” my tone goes artic as I realize what this is about, “you’re doing this to piss off Draven somehow aren't you?”

Adrian clenches his jaw, his face clouding over in bitter anger, “not everything in my life has to do with him, you know.”

I take my time to look him over, trying to find any sign that he’s lying to me again. But one thing I quickly realize is that if he is lying, there's no way in hell I’d be able to tell.

Adrian is too damn good at lying to slip up especially in front of me. He knows I’d never let it go if I was able to catch him red handed.

Sighing, I look past him to see that Cathy seems to have already partnered up which left me with very little options now.

“Fine, I’ll tutor you,” I agree, holding out my hand, “but we make sure you take this seriously, if you even try to make this another game the mess with me or your brother then I'm out.”

“Deal?”

Adrian’s large hand eclipses mine, a more genuine smile settles lightly on his face, so unfamiliar, but nice to see.

“Deal.”
