Chapter 29

Kate’s POV

Cathy and I stand off to the side chatting as the rest of the class has their matches when a voice cuts in.

“Don’t get too cocky just because you got in some lucky hits,” Rebecca taunts as she walks over.

“Back off Rebecca,” Cathy cuts in just as her name is called for her match, “why don’t you go wait to get your ass kicked by people who can actually stomach being around you.”

Before Rebecca had a chance to go off, Cathy’s name was called for the next match.

She shoots me an uneasy look, checking to see if I’m okay being left alone with Rebecca. I just smiled and nodded that I was good.

She hurries to start her match. While I turn my focus back on Rebecca, my smile falls as I cross my arms.

“Oh, what you got nothing to say?” Rebecca mocks, “can’t talk without your guard dog?”

“What do you want?” I asked her, annoyed and really not wanting to deal with her crap.

“Oh nothing, just curious how you got some good at fighting so fast,” Rebecca said, smirking at me, “hmm, could it be that you used some kind of enhancement?”

“Or maybe you knew who your partner was going to be and bribed him to take a fall during your match?”

“I didn’t cheat,” I said, my anger rising at all the bullshit she's spouting, "just accept the fact that I’m more impressive than you ever thought and stop being such a bitch.”

“You -”

“That’s enough Rebecca,” Draven cuts in, “you know that cheating is not allowed and also damn near impossible now anyway.”

“But, it doesn't make sense how she's gotten so strong so quickly,” Rebecca said, her temper flaring more now that Draven cut in.

“Cut it out Rebecca, seriously,” Draven said, his voice like ice as he stares her down, “being she isn't human, her growth isn’t all that surprising.”

“So stop trying to start something with Katie and just back off.”

The look on Rebecca’s face is priceless as she gets scolded by Draven, and the fact that he’s doing it in front of me of all people seems to infuriate her even more.

But Draven doesn’t seem to notice or care.

Without looking at Rebecca again, Draven turns to me a small smile tugs at the corner of his lips.

“Would you want to spar with me as we wait for the rest of the matches to finish?”

“Um,” I start, feeling kind of surprised by his out of the blue question, “sure, I suppose.”

We walk over to the far side of the training grounds where a few other students have paired up to do some light sparing as well.

Turning I face Draven I take in his tall muscular form wrapped in his training uniform. The wind swept his chocolate brown hair into his eyes, ruining his usual impeccable hair style.

“Calm down,” I tell myself. I can’t get caught up in his looks or anything having to do with him anymore.

Shaking myself out of it, I get ready. I'm going to show him just how “weak” I really am, launching out my first punch.

I don’t know how much time passes as we trade hits, the air between us seems to be electrically charged as each hit is parried or dodged. This dance we are doing is exhilarating and dangerous in more ways than one.

The glint I find in his eyes is so tempting but also very dangerous. I can’t get a read on what is going through his head as he dodges another punch.

But whatever it is is very different from the frosted looks he’s been giving me for weeks now.

Off to the side my eye catches the grim, teeth gnashing look of Rebecca crushing her water bottle in her hand as she watches Draven and I.

I smirk amused at just how jealous one person can be before I focus back on Draven in front of me, nearly failing to dodge a kick to the thigh.

“Are you getting tired yet?” he asked, something almost like worry seemed to seep into his tone, “do you wanna take a break?”

Taking this opening I quickly sweep his leg, knocking him on his ass. Standing over him, I chuckle to myself and smirk down at him.

“I’m good,” I said, thrilled I managed to finally one up him, “are you?”

Draven’s POV

I stare up at Katie, the sunlight highlighting her beautiful features, her raven hair swaying in the breeze as she looks down at me.

Her pale green eyes a light with the thrill of victory and the slight mocking look that just takes my breath away.

Has she always looked so beautifully radiant? How did I never notice this about her?

“Because you're a moron,” Landon deadpans, like it’s the most obvious thing in the world.

I quickly rise to my feet, taking notice that she just steps back, she doesn’t offer a hand to help me up. She’s keeping her distance.

I know it was what I wanted before but now it stings. A part of me aches being so close to her yet so far away. I mean we used to be so close.

I was able to touch her and hold her as much as I wanted and at the time I used that as a way to calm Landon, I know that. But that didn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it, that I didn’t crave it with my full body.

Damn it, what have I done?

My mind is such a chaotic mess right now as my thoughts keep swirling. Each time Katie goes in for a punch or a kick, when she dodges one of my attacks I can't help but find myself mesmerized.

I took the fact that she was “human” before as such a bad thing, especially for my mate, that I think I failed to really see her true potential.

Maybe if I had opened myself up more I would have seen this side of her sooner and things could have been different for us.

Or well at least the relationship wouldn’t have turned out to be as bad as it was now.

“That’s all you're doing,” Landon growls at me, so pissed at me for not listening to him the millions of times he told me to keep Katie with them, to claim her as theirs.

I broke out of my thoughts when a heavy punch landed on my shoulder, bringing me back to the present fight.

Katie’s smile lights up her whole face as she dances on the balls of her feet.

“Tiring out?”

My lips twitch, fighting a smile, I chuckle as I stretch my shoulder before readying for the next hit. I really hope that now that Katie’s in A Class I could fix the damage I’ve done.

“You wish.”

I clench my jaw tightly, trying to hide the feelings that keep swimming to the surface. We’re siblings now, I’ll just act like an older brother, then everything should be ok.

“Idiot,” Landon’s voice echoes through my head.

I ignore him, focusing back on Katie. Having made up my mind, I push off the ground launching forward at Katie.

I can act like an older brother…right?
