Chapter 24

Katie’s POV

“Being Katie is just finding out that shifters and things exist, there will be a transitional period before she joins A Class.”

“Transitional period?” I asked, ignoring Draven’s sour expression, choosing to focus on the one person that actually seems to believe in me right now.

“Yes, during that time, instead of just your regular major classes you have been taking,” Lucius said, focusing on me, “you will also take combat and strengthening classes to help you once you fully integrate into A Class.”

“I will also take on the role of your mentor, and provide guidance to you when I can.”

“My mentor?”

“Her mentor?”

Both Draven and I ask at once. I frown at his insistence to butt In again. I mean didn't I just tell him to mind his own business?

Lucius ignores Draven, focusing on me as he explains.

“Yes, your mentor,” Lucius said, crossing his arms with mild amusement in his eyes, “do you have a problem with that?”

I just shake my head, “nope, none at all.”

“Good,” Lucius said, a small twitch of his lip makes me think he found me amusing.

“Our main goal to start is to work out what your ability is. Once we know that we can help you learn how to control it.”

“Then I'll fully join A Class?” I asked, could I really find out my ability so quickly?

“During this period of time I'll be teaching you about the different courses A Class has and I'll give you reading materials to help you familiarize yourself with shifters and other things you'll need to know.”

“Are A Class courses a lot different from what I was already taking?” I asked, a knot in my stomach at the thought of failing.

I've always done my absolute best in school. So, I could have the future I wanted.

But if I can't cut it once I join A Class then what am I going to do?

Though it was only briefly and I didn't put much stock in what was said because I thought it was a prank.

But I think I remember hearing that humans who stumble upon shifters either get their memories wiped or…or they get “taken care of.”

I doubt they meant a peaceful relocation where their secret can't be leaked.

Being, the memory erase didn't work on me, if I fail in A Class, wouldn't death be my only fate?

Can I really do this?

“All major related programs remain the same so the only changes would be added classes."

Lucius’s voice breaks me out of my panic spiral.

“Combat and strength training go hand in hand, then there is otherworld history so you can learn more about shifters and other races you never knew of.”

As Lucius explains, a part of me is actually starting to get excited.

“With the new regulations I set for the school, A Class students will participate in all the same classes as B and C Classes, however they also have their own designated special classes as I've just mentioned.”

“So, basically my workloads are going to double now?” I asked, despite my growing excitement at learning new things, the worry is still there.

Could I really handle more on my plate with everything going on?

“Yes, and no,” Lucius said, seeming to already pick up on my growing worry,”there are many special classes for A Class.”

“This transition period will give you time to look into them as well, and find which ones you want to take on. Then they'll be worked into your schedule with the other classes.”

“So, like when people pick electives?” I asked, the knot in my stomach loosened.

“Something like that,” Lucius agreed, a faint smile gracing his lips.

“Being you have no idea of what your ability is yet, you can do what a lot of students do and seek help from the counseling center.”

“Counseling center?”

“Yes, the counseling center is where students can go and work with the counselors to find out which classes best fit them and their abilities.”

That sounded like the perfect option for me, to be honest. The rest of my worry fades away as my smile grows.

“I'd really like to check out the counseling center,” I said, the excitement from earlier growing.

I'm not going to be thrown into this all alone. Which was one of my biggest worries.

Casting a glance at Draven who's been silent this whole time, I can't help but frown a little.

He looks more annoyed than before, it seems to just worsen the longer Lucius and I talk. If not for Lucius right now would Draven have helped me?

To be honest, I doubt it. He doesn't even think I should be in A Class. So, it seems like Lucius is the only one willing to help me through this transition.

A part of my heart lifts at that thought. Maybe I can handle this.

Draven’s POV

Watching Katie happily talking to their headmaster, stirs something up inside me. I can put a finger on it exactly but I know I don’t think the way these two are interacting.

“It’s because another male is sniffing around our mate,” Landon growls, his proverbial hackles are up as he peers through my eyes at the happy pair treating them like a wall decoration.

“What are you waiting for, go and stake your claim on our mate,” Landon persists, growing more unsettled the longer I stand by doing nothing.

“I can’t just insert myself into their conversation,” I respond grimly, rubbing a hand over my sore tired face, wincing slightly as I touch the open cut on my lip.

“Besides, she isn’t our mate.”

Landon’s growls ripe through my head, it takes everything in me not visibly wince at the sheer force and volume he managed.

“Knock it off, I didn’t say anything wrong, she technically isn’t our mate,” I try to coax Landon into calming down, “we never claimed her or marked her you know that.”

“And whose dumb idea was it to not claim her right away?” Landon seethes as we take notice of Lucius removing a stray leaf that had landed atop Katie's hair.

Landon and I fall completely silent, our eyes locked on Lucius’s hand before falling to Katie’s face. The slight blush she gets when Lucius reaches to grab it, and the distance that closes between them is so vivid for him and his wolf it’s like we’re watching everything in slow motion and in high definition.

“This is bad,” Landon’s grim voice reverberates through my head. I can’t disagree with him, based on the flush of Katie’s cheeks and how she wasn’t opposed to Lucius’s close proximity are big red flags for him.

Whether it’s Lucius or some other guy, If Katie is open to the possibility of someone else then his own situation gets even more complicated.

I need to figure out what I can do to improve our standing with Katie.

“Are you serious right now?” Landon’s bitter voice snaps at me, “you’re seriously thinking about that now after all the crap you just said to her not even five minutes ago?”

“We are so screwed.”
