Chapter 20
“What?” several students shouted in outrage.
The peaceful auditorium quickly erupted into chaos. Rebecca’s words echoing off the walls of the auditorium, causing an uproar among everyone.
“A human?” another student asked again, voices overlapping as everyone tried to talk.
Great, just fabulous. Everything was going so well, I hoped we’d be able to get this wrapped up quickly so I could go do some studying.
But of course our loud mouthed, rude as hell, cheer captain Rebecca couldn’t keep her trap shut.
Amidst the chaos sat Rebecca, smirking at me, enjoying how things shifted in a matter of seconds.
“Why's a human joining A Class?” someone called out, others quick to demand answers as well.
I looked over at the mentor, hoping she would be able to calm them down but she seemed just as lost as I was.
“Ah, well..” the mentor started, trying to think of how to explain, but coming up empty.
Why the heck isn’t our illustrious headmaster here doing this stuff instead of us? I mean it was his damn idea in the first place.
Sighing, I stepped forward again to take the mic back.
“Um, it was found out that I am not human, I have some type of power,” I said, looking around at everyone, hoping that this will be enough for them, “I was told I'm superhuman.”
Another flurry of conversation spread through the auditorium.
“If you're a superhuman, then prove it,” someone shouted out, getting a lot of others to follow.
I didn’t know how to use any of my power, so how was I going to be able to prove it to them?
Helplessly, I looked around lost, when my eyes landed on Draven. He seemed like he was about to say something, maybe say something in my defense but hesitated again like that time on the sports field.
To say I was disappointed in him was an understatement.
I don’t expect him to treat me like he did when we were dating. I get it, that whole thing is dead and buried but can he just step up and act like a normal person, like a friend at least.
Why couldn't he just have my back just once?
“Hey, if she was just a human,” Adrian said, voice cutting through everyone else's, “ she wouldn't be standing here right now, unharmed.”
My gaze falls on Adrian, signature cocky smirk in place like always. With something else seemingly hidden underneath, mischievous and excitement maybe.
Even though he spoke up for me, it was probably an opening for him to mess with Draven again. So, even though I’m glad he said something I’m not under any illusion that he was doing it for my benefit.
“Since she can enter A Class, that means she's been recognized by Lucius.”
The auditorium quieted down as his words sank in. This left an opening for the mentor to speak up.
“Indeed, Miss Stirling wouldn't be with us here today if headmaster Lucius didn't want it.”
Letting the words sink in, everyone seemed to accept it, given how they all knew the rules regarding a human finding out about them.
“But -” Rebecca starts, determined not to let anything go, like always. But she gets quickly interrupted by the mentor, much to my delight.
“That’s all now, everyone back to your regularly scheduled classes,” the Mentor said quickly, dismissing everyone.
With nothing left to discuss, everyone started filing out and going off to their next classes and stuff.
I was walking out the door when Draven walked over to me.
To be honest, I really didn't want to see hom right now but it seemed I didn't have a choice.
“What happened with the headmaster?” Draven asked, barely contained worry seemed to seep into his voice, “I thought you were having a memory extraction.”
“Also, why are you suddenly joining A Class?”
“I received the headmaster's approval, like Adrian said,” I replied coldly, annoyed that it was the brother I barely knew that stood up for me.
“Really?” Draven asked, doubtful, “ your just an ordinary person, how could you possibly -”
“Wow, you really are worthy of being an A Class elite, aren't you?” I said sarcastically, tired of this bullshit with him, “you're no different then Rebecca.”
What worry I thought I picked up on Draven's face quickly shifted to his cold, dissatisfied glare just before Adrian pulled me into a hug.
“If you're so curious about the headmaster's decision,” Adrian said sarcastically, “ maybe you should ask him directly.”
Keeping his arm around my shoulders, Adrian dragged me away from Draven.
I was thankful for the excuse to get away from Draven, not in the mood to deal with him right now.
Once,we're out of sight of Draven, so I pushed Adrian away.
“Do not use me to provoke Draven again,” I said, coldly, done with Adrian's crap, “I'm not the same as before.”
“I am no longer at your mercy.”
“What'd Lucius do to get you to change so much?” Adrian asked, surprised by how I was being.
I just ignored him, determined to put up boundaries between the two of us. I'm sick of being treated like less than just because they thought I was human this entire time.
“Even though we are in the same class now,” I said, my voice growing colder, do not disturb me anymore.”
“That's not up to you,” Adrian responded, his cocky smirk in full effect.
I chose to end our conversation there, ignoring him. I walked over to the little café that was built on campus for the students.
As I was waiting for my order, several of the A Class guys came over.
“Hey, you're Katie right?” a kind looking, blonde haired guy asked, smiling at me.
“Yeah, that's me,” I replied smilingly slightly.
I felt awkward and uncomfortable being around so many new people. Also, throw in that they are all shifters and A Class members, my anxiety is spiking.
“That was an impressive introduction you made,” another guy said, giving off a cocky and a bit arrogant air about him, “I'd love to be friends.”
Sipping my coffee I try to calm my overworked nerves.
“No thank you,” I politely refused. I didn’t have the time or patience to befriend someone with cockyness and annoyance practically wafting off him.
Plus, I needed to just focus on my studies so I can put this whole mess behind me once I graduate.
“What?” The guy asked, face hardening at my rejection, clearly dissatisfied.
“I'm focused on studying, ” I politely explained, hoping to defuse the situation, "I'm not looking to make friends.”
I go to step around the guy and his group of friends when he blocks my way.
The guy is big. He's tall, muscular and now looking pretty intimidating once his cocky attitude shifted to anger.
I haven't had any combat or physical type training ever, so I knew I was no match for this guy, much less any of his friends.
I just got myself into a pickle.
As I was struggling to figure out a way to defuse the situation, a strong muscular back filled my line of sight, as someone stood in front of me.
