Aurora’s P.O.V

Me desperté sobresaltada por un dolor agudo en mi costado, sintiendo como si todo mi cuerpo hubiera sido atropellado por un camión a toda velocidad. No pasó mucho tiempo antes de que el dolor de cabeza punzante me hiciera gemir de dolor.

Intenté mover mi cuerpo, pero el sonido del vidrio desplazándose debajo de mí me hizo detenerme. Parpadeé, mis ojos ajustándose a la luz tenue y al hedor de alcohol y miseria. No tardé en darme cuenta de que estaba acostada en el frío y duro suelo de la sala, con fragmentos de vidrio roto por todas partes.

Mi padre...

Había estado en casa anoche…

—¡Maldita zorra! —la voz de mi padre resonaba en mis oídos, fuerte y muy arrastrada, con una botella vacía de whisky en sus manos—. ¿Dónde está el dinero? ¡Sé que trabajas en ese estúpido restaurante! ¡Dame el dinero!

—No tengo dinero —había gimoteado, tratando de mostrarme valiente, pero ambos sabíamos que era solo una fachada.

—¡Mentirosa! —había gritado mientras me empujaba con fuerza en el pecho, el impacto me había hecho caer al suelo—. ¡No te atrevas a mentirle a tu padre, perra!

—¡No estoy mintiendo, lo prometo! —En ese momento, no había podido detenerlo mientras me levantaba del suelo agarrándome del cabello—. ¡Por favor! ¡Me estás haciendo daño!

Pero mis palabras habían caído en oídos sordos—. Date la vuelta.

—¡No tengo dinero, lo juro! —había insistido a pesar de que mi cuerpo temblaba violentamente por la manera en que me estaba registrando los bolsillos, mis labios temblaban incontrolablemente hasta que los mordí lo suficientemente fuerte como para hacerlos sangrar. Pero eso no lo había detenido de registrar mi habitación, sin importarle mi privacidad.

Había encontrado el dinero, dentro de la funda del colchón, un total de treinta y cinco dólares que había recibido como propina en el restaurante después de horas de estar de pie.

—¡Maldita mentirosa! —Esta vez, no había visto la botella bajando sobre mí.

Pero había sentido el impacto del vidrio en la parte posterior de mi cabeza; lo había escuchado romperse al contacto. Mi cabeza daba vueltas; se había quedado entumecida por el dolor mientras manchas negras bailaban ante mis ojos.

Había arrojado la botella medio rota al suelo junto a mí, haciéndome estremecer, como si no acabara de abusar de su única hija. Y luego había salido de la casa, llevándose los ahorros de mi semana, sin importarle que mi hermano pequeño y yo no tendríamos nada para comer el resto de la semana.

Ahora, parpadeé para despejar la somnolencia y coloqué una mano en la parte superior de mi cabeza, conteniendo un grito de agonía cuando sentí que el dolor aumentaba como si una aguja se hubiera clavado en mi cráneo.

Las lágrimas corrían por mi rostro mientras me sentaba en el suelo, mirando el desastre a mi alrededor. Necesitaba limpiar esto… Necesitaba asegurarme de que no quedaran rastros de la noche anterior en el suelo, en toda la casa…

No podía permitirme esto… No podía permitir que Riley descubriera lo mal que había llegado.

Levantarse del suelo requirió un tipo diferente de esfuerzo. Todo mi cuerpo temblaba y dolía, haciéndome dar cuenta de que mi padre podría haberme pateado más después de que me desmayara.

Una risa amarga escapó de mis labios cuando me di cuenta de la magnitud de su crueldad, pero ¿qué podía hacer? Mi padre no ocultaba que me odiaba, y el tormento solo había aumentado desde que mi madre falleció al dar a luz a mi hermanito, Riley.

Ahora, me levanté con pies temblorosos, mi cabeza dando vueltas por el esfuerzo mientras intentaba no pisar los fragmentos de vidrio roto. El dolor era agudo, pero había aprendido a reprimirlo. No podía permitirme mostrarlo.

Riley. Él estaba a salvo. Estaba escondido en su habitación, apartado donde no podía ver ni ser visto. No podía soportar la idea de que lo presenciara de nuevo. Casi podía escucharlo llamándome, preguntando si todo estaba bien, si yo estaba bien.

Pero no lo estaba. Ni remotamente. ¿Cómo se supone que le diga eso a un niño de cinco años? ¿Cómo se supone que le comparta mi dolor a alguien que apenas entiende por qué está pasando todo esto?

Caminé de vuelta a mi habitación, mordiéndome el labio para evitar gritar. El suelo estaba frío contra mis pies descalzos, y di un paso cuidadoso hacia el baño. El espejo reflejaba un rostro que no reconocía—ojos hinchados, cabello enredado, labios agrietados. Mis manos temblaban mientras encendía el agua, salpicando mi cara. La frescura no me calmaba; nada lo hacía ya. Pero no podía quedarme así.

Necesitaba moverme. Necesitaba seguir adelante por el bien de Riley. Por su futuro.

Una vez que el agua fría hizo su trabajo, regresé tambaleándome a mi habitación y revolví entre el montón de ropa vieja en mi cómoda, encontrando algo medio decente para la escuela. Una camiseta simple, jeans viejos y zapatillas. No había tenido tiempo para comprar ropa en meses—mi padre se aseguraba de que no tuviera nada, y hasta la ropa que usaba era de segunda mano, comprada en un centro de beneficencia. No importaba. Me la pondría, y seguiría con mi vida. Tenía que hacerlo.

Porque si había alguna oportunidad de salir de este horrible pueblo, de este vecindario espantoso…entonces tomaría todas las oportunidades que pudiera. Por ahora, necesitaba obtener mi diploma de secundaria y asegurarme de mantenerme fuera de problemas lo mejor que pudiera, porque mi padre ya había causado suficientes.

Mientras me vestía y me miraba en el espejo, la imagen que me devolvía me horrorizaba incluso a mí. Parecía pálida como un fantasma, pero el moretón oscuro en mi mejilla necesitaba ser cubierto. Ya era una rara en la escuela cuyo padre era un jugador y un borracho. No necesitaba anunciar al mundo que también estaba siendo abusada.

Así que usé la única base que había logrado comprar en una tienda de todo a dólar para cubrir el moretón. No ayudaba mucho, pero hacía el trabajo.

Mirándome en el espejo una última vez, me puse mi mejor sonrisa, como si pudiera ayudarme a engañarme a mí misma de que todo en mi vida no se estaba desmoronando, que no estaba al borde de desmoronarme por las costuras…

Era en momentos como estos que deseaba desesperadamente que mi madre aún estuviera viva, que no me hubiera dejado sola en este mundo, para cuidar de una pequeña alma a quien había jurado proteger hasta el final.

Pero sacudí ese pensamiento de mi cabeza. Mi madre se había ido, estaba en el cielo ahora, segura y feliz…lejos de los tormentos del hombre a quien había amado desesperadamente, y quien ahora se había convertido en un monstruo.

¿Por qué? Era una pregunta que me encontraba haciendo más veces de las que podía contar. Pero sabía que las respuestas no llegarían.

¿Por qué tuvo que morir mi madre tan pronto?

¿Por qué mi padre de repente se convirtió en este adicto al juego…este alcohólico…este…monstruo?

Y lo más importante…¿por qué me odiaba tanto?
