Chapter 6: A Man's Thoughts Are Even Harder to Guess
"Congrats on tying the knot! Hope you guys have a long and happy life together!"
Rebecca still felt like she was in a dream as she walked out of City Hall and got into the car.
She glanced over and saw Frederick handing the documents to Mike, including their signed marriage agreement.
"Mr. Windsor..."
The car started moving.
Rebecca looked at Frederick cautiously, "I... I have a favor to ask."
"Go ahead."
"Could we... hold off on having a wedding and not announce our marriage publicly?"
Almost as soon as she finished speaking, she saw Frederick's face darken.
Rebecca quickly explained, "I'm not trying to back out. I haven't graduated yet, and my mom's really sick, I..."
Rebecca was a junior at Empire University.
If the Getty family hadn't run into trouble, she would have been attending classes at Empire University right now.
But to deal with the Getty family’s debt and Alexa's illness, she had been running around and hadn't been to school for over a week.
Alexa couldn't handle the shock of her husband's death and the company’s bankruptcy, and she had a mental breakdown.
At this critical moment, she couldn't bear any more stress.
If she found out that Rebecca had gone to such lengths to pay off a $100 million debt, she might...
Frederick's expression softened slightly, "Alright."
Rebecca let out a sigh of relief.
When her phone rang, Rebecca instinctively glanced at Frederick.
Seeing him fully focused on the emails on his tablet, Rebecca moved closer to the window and answered the call quietly, "Izzy..."
"Becca, what's going on? Why do you have marriage documents? Don't tell me you registered your marriage with Mr. Windsor!"
"I..."
"What do you mean 'I'? Sure, the plan was to attract Mr. Windsor and get Elizabeth’s gift, but dating is one thing, marriage is another! Becca, it’s just $100 million, we’ll figure something out. I absolutely won’t let you gamble your lifelong happiness!"
"I'll call you back later!"
Fearing that Isabella might say something shocking, Rebecca quickly hung up the phone.
The car was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Rebecca lowered her head, her eyes on Frederick's fingers holding the tablet.
She was terrified that he would throw the tablet aside, grab her by the neck, and toss her out of the car.
Frederick's eyes briefly flashed with amusement.
He looked at the girl next to him, who was curled up like a frightened quail, with a trace of a smile in his voice, "If I hadn't called you back yesterday, what was your plan to attract me?"
Oh no, oh no!
Izzy, you've killed me!
Rebecca felt like crying out in despair internally, not daring to lift her head, "I... I..."
Her cheeks turned pink, spreading to her ears and even her neck.
Frederick had no doubt that if they weren't in the car, she would have darted to find a corner or a crack to hide in.
After all, she had done similar things before.
The first time they met, she called him "Brother Frederick," causing everyone to burst into laughter.
That day, she hid behind Dennis.
Only her lively eyes peeked out to look at him.
The memory surfaced in Frederick's mind, and the smile in his eyes vanished completely.
Rebecca immediately sensed it.
She looked up to see Frederick's face clouded with anger as he focused on his emails again.
It was as if he was angry at being used.
The car's atmosphere was heavy and oppressive, and Rebecca looked at Mike in the driver’s seat for help.
She met Mike’s equally desperate eyes.
Rebecca stayed silent.
Mike forced himself to speak, “Mr. Windsor, are we heading to the office or back to Pinewood Mansion?”
“I’m going to the office. You take Rebecca home,” Frederick replied, turning to Rebecca. “From now on, you’ll live at Pinewood Mansion. Rest up over the weekend and head back to school on Monday.”
“Okay,” Rebecca nodded.
“It’s slippery in the snow; don’t drive yourself. Have the driver take you if you need to go somewhere.”
“Okay!”
“And…”
Rebecca truly seemed as obedient as she had promised at the Windsor Mansion.
But Frederick felt inexplicably irritated.
He had seen Rebecca around Dennis, lively, carefree, soft yet willful.
But now, the Rebecca beside him was gentle, obedient, as if she would only say “okay” to whatever he said.
Frederick picked up his tablet and closed it, deciding not to say anything further.
The car smoothly stopped at the entrance of the Windsor Group, and he got out without a word.
Rebecca was a bit bewildered.
Her intuition told her he was angry!
But could someone tell her why he was angry?
They say you can’t guess a woman’s thoughts, but a man’s thoughts are even harder to figure out!
“Mrs. Windsor, shall I take you home?” Mike asked, still a bit confused, watching Frederick disappear into the company.
Rebecca shook her head and gave him an address, then sent a message to Isabella.
Ten minutes later, the car stopped by the roadside.
“Mike, you should go back. Mr. Windsor probably needs you.”
With Frederick gone, Rebecca returned to her usual lively self, waving to Mike as she got out of the car, “I’m meeting a friend for coffee. She’ll take me home later.”
After watching the car drive away, Rebecca looked up at the bright sunlight overhead and stepped on the snow at her feet, still feeling like she was in a dream.
The rich aroma of the latte filled her mouth.
When Isabella arrived in a hurry and pinched her, Rebecca finally snapped out of it.
Everything was real!
She!
Had married!
Frederick!
“You took the marriage documents, and now the apartment and car I sold are back…”
Isabella looked at Rebecca with a complicated expression, “Becca, until yesterday, I dreamed of you being chosen by Mr. Windsor. But now that it’s real, I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing!”
Marrying Frederick and becoming Mrs. Windsor was the ultimate dream of the socialites in Empire City.
But now that Rebecca was Mrs. Windsor, Isabella couldn’t feel happy at all.
On one side of the scale was $100 million, and on the other was lifelong happiness.
Is it really… worth it?
“Of course it’s a good thing!”
Rebecca smiled and took a sip of coffee, “Izzy, I must have saved the galaxy in my past life to have such a good friend like you and to meet Frederick when I was most helpless.”
Without Frederick, the $100 million debt and Alexa’s illness would have crushed her.
How could she be sitting here, chatting and drinking coffee with Izzy?
“The past is past. From now on, let’s all live well…”
Rebecca raised her coffee cup to Isabella, her expression full of hope, “To our future happiness, cheers!”
The crisp sound of clinking cups rang out, and Rebecca’s smile was bright.
Then Isabella’s face suddenly changed.
“Becca…”
A voice called from behind, and Rebecca’s smile slowly faded.
