Ella

—Déjame ir —intenté soltar mi muñeca de su agarre, estaba magullada, dolía—. Micah, por favor.

Miré alrededor del pasillo, observando a todos mientras caminaban hacia sus clases, ignorándonos. Intenté captar la mirada de alguien, la atención de cualquiera, pero nadie siquiera miró en nuestra dirección.

Volví mis ojos hacia él, sintiendo las lágrimas arder en mis ojos. Dios, era guapo. Hermoso, incluso.

—Por favor, suéltame —quería huir de él, no quería que me viera llorar. Presioné mis labios juntos, observando sus ojos mientras caían, llenos de tristeza.

—Inesa, ¿podemos hablar? —Bajó su rostro, escudriñando mis ojos.

No sabía qué estaba buscando, aunque soltó mi muñeca cuando asentí suavemente.

—¿Después de la escuela?

Asentí de nuevo.

—¿Podemos encontrarnos al frente?

—Está bien —susurré.

Mis ojos se dirigieron al suelo, no quería enfrentarlo. Me alejé de él, liberándome del olor hipnótico de su colonia.

La campana sonó, notificándome que llegaba tarde a clase. Murmuré para mí misma, molesta. Aunque sabía que con una pequeña sonrisa y una disculpa, me dejarían entrar al aula sin problemas. Me limpié la nariz con la manga de mi suéter, secando mis lágrimas con la palma de mi mano.

—¿Estás bien?

La voz ronca me sobresaltó, y dejé caer el par de libros que llevaba en el brazo. Con un suspiro y un sollozo, me agaché, recogiéndolos mientras sacudía la cabeza con frustración. Al ponerme de pie y ajustarlos en el hueco de mi codo, dos dedos presionaron mi barbilla.

Jadeé, moviendo mis ojos con mi rostro mientras era forzado hacia arriba. Me encontré con la mirada intimidante de dos ojos verde bosque. Estaban enmarcados por cejas oscuras, interrumpidas por un pequeño parche de pelos blancos en la esquina de su ceja izquierda. Mis labios temblaron, luchaba por encontrar palabras, aunque mis ojos se deleitaban.

La racha de blanco continuaba en el cabello castaño oscuro de su cabeza como una línea recta sobre su lado izquierdo, haciendo que pareciera que lo había teñido a propósito, pero ¿quién haría eso? Levantó su ceja blanca, presionando sus labios alrededor del cigarrillo encendido que equilibraba entre ellos.

—¿Estás bien? —Repitió, sus dedos aún presionando la parte inferior de mi barbilla.

—Yo... —me congelé de nuevo por el bosque en sus ojos. Nunca lo había visto antes, aunque al mirarlo me preguntaba cómo podría haberlo pasado por alto.

Era alto, con hombros anchos y tenía tatuajes por todo el brazo. Frunció el ceño mientras estudiaba mi rostro, y yo sostenía los libros contra mi pecho, mis nudillos volviéndose blancos al apretar mi agarre.

La forma en que me miraba me dejaba sin aliento, hacía que mi pecho doliera de repente. ¿Cómo no lo había notado antes?

—¡Señor Ashford! —La voz chillona de la señora Jacob me hizo estremecer y alejarme de su toque. Ni siquiera había escuchado la puerta abrirse. Él mantuvo sus ojos en mí, sin siquiera reconocer su presencia—. ¡Saque ese cigarrillo de su boca y apáguelo! ¡Quiero que lo tire a la basura, ahora! Le voy a poner una detención.

Frunció el ceño suavemente, aunque mantuvo sus ojos en mí, haciéndome sonrojar bajo su mirada. Sin mirarla, empujó el cigarrillo de sus labios con la lengua y lo dejó caer al suelo, aplastándolo con su pesada bota.

—¡Señor Ashford! —La señora Jacob golpeó el suelo con el pie, mirándolo con el ceño fruncido.

Finalmente rompió su oscura mirada de mí para lanzarle una mirada furiosa antes de agacharse a recoger el cigarrillo aplastado del suelo.

—Señorita Aberra.

Aparté mi mirada de él, solo entonces dándome cuenta de que lo estaba mirando sin ningún cuidado. Ella entrecerró los ojos hacia mí, señalando el aula con la cabeza.

—Lo siento —murmuré, entrando en el aula familiar. Me congelé cuando noté los ojos de todos sobre mí. Sentí las lágrimas detrás de mis ojos de nuevo, burlándose de mí con su probable aparición.

Miré alrededor, casi haciendo una mueca de dolor cuando vi los escritorios vacíos donde Liz y yo nos sentábamos hace solo unos días. Quería desmoronarme, y huir, esconderme de las miradas curiosas.

De repente, sentí una mano fuerte y cálida en mi espalda baja, empujándome hacia adelante. Lo miré, y él parecía fruncir el ceño a todos los que me miraban.

—Vamos —murmuró.

Mi corazón se desbocó en un espasmo loco, pero caminé hacia adelante, encontrando una extraña fuerza en su toque. Caminó a mi lado hasta que llegamos a los últimos escritorios que estaban en la esquina del aula.

Me senté, apenas escuchando a la señora Jacobs mientras hablaba frente a la clase. Él se sentó a mi lado, echando la cabeza hacia atrás y cruzando los brazos sobre su pecho.

¿Siempre había estado en esta clase?

Era la última clase del día y apenas podía mantener mi concentración, mis palmas estaban sudorosas y mi pecho dolía cuando inhalaba. Mantuve mis ojos alejados de los escritorios vacíos que Liz y yo habíamos ocupado la semana anterior, la vista de ellos me hacía querer vomitar.

Me arrepentí de haber aceptado la sugerencia de Micah. No quería verlo, y mucho menos hablar con él. ¿Cómo pudo haber hecho eso? Lo amaba. Él era todo. Él era suficiente.

Supongo que yo no lo era.

—¿Inesa?

El sonido de mi nombre en su voz profunda y ronca me hizo erizar la piel. Me volví hacia él con el ceño fruncido.

¿Cómo sabía mi nombre?

—¿Estás bien?

Me sentí como una idiota, y estaba segura de que parecía una. Mis labios se separaron y inhalé, aunque no estaba segura de qué iba a decir. Antes de que una palabra pudiera salir de mi boca, la campana sonó fuerte, haciéndome estremecer ligeramente.

Me levanté apresuradamente, recogiendo mis cosas. Él me observó desde su asiento, su mirada volviéndose furiosa.

—Ehm, gracias —susurré, aunque no estaba segura de por qué le daba las gracias.

Todo lo que sabía era que tenía que salir de allí. Me estaba asfixiando. Giré sobre mis talones y lo dejé allí con sus hermosos ojos y su mirada intimidante.
