Puedo sentir el calor del fuego mientras mi madre añade más leña para mantener la humedad fuera de nuestra cueva, olas de calor acariciando mis mejillas. Tiene un brillo en su rostro que nunca antes había visto y puedo escucharla respirar como si no hubiera podido hacerlo en mucho tiempo. Afuera, la lluvia cae por primera vez desde que era niña y cada alma en la cueva estaba relajada y en silencio, agradeciendo al gran cielo por su generosidad. Ha sido difícil, el sol ha estado furioso y la tierra ha sufrido enormemente.
La hierba murió primero, el suave manto verde fue reemplazado por uno marrón y áspero que hacía doler los pies solo con caminar sobre él. Después de la hierba fueron los arbustos y los árboles, todos se quedaron sin su suministro de agua y se apagaron esperando... Mi madre viene y toma mi mano, tirándome hacia la entrada de nuestra cueva y hacia la lluvia. El agua me golpea y jadeo por aire, pero es la mejor sensación que he sentido. Las gotas duras hacen que mis pequeños músculos tensos se relajen y enfríen mi cuerpo cálido. Las siento hormiguear sobre mi piel como una colmena de abejas y lloro. Lloro de alegría por nuestra tierra, por nuestra gente y por los animales que regresan. Mis lágrimas saladas se mezclan con el dulce sabor de la lluvia en mi boca y miro a los ojos de mi madre y sus emociones reflejan las mías. Estamos girando, bailando, llorando y riendo juntas. Mi respiración se vuelve difícil y tengo que reducir la velocidad. Madre pone sus manos en mis hombros, haciéndome detener. Sus manos viajan hasta mi rostro, apartando los largos mechones mojados de mi cara. Ella besa mi nariz, mis mejillas y mis labios y apoya su frente contra la mía. Su oración es fuerte mientras agradece al Cielo.

Tan pronto como la última palabra de su oración dejó sus labios, mi nueva fuerza me abandonó. Mis piernas desaparecieron bajo mí y caí al suelo, mi pecho arde y cada respiración se siente como llamas lamiendo mi interior. Me pongo de rodillas y manos, tratando de toser el fuego, y con cada intento, un poco más de aire entraba. Respiro más profundo, toso más fuerte y entonces lo siento, es como si el fuego estuviera ayudando a derretir el polvo en mis pulmones. Abro la boca y vomito. Moco gris caliente salpica mis manos antes de que la lluvia lo enjuague y estoy respirando de nuevo, realmente respirando, respiraciones profundas y limpias hasta el fondo de mis pulmones. Sin fuego, sin dolor, sin falta de oxígeno.
Miro a mi madre, aunque la lluvia cae sobre su rostro puedo ver que está llorando, pero son las lágrimas que siguen al sentimiento que tienes cuando piensas que has perdido algo importante en tu vida solo para encontrarlo de nuevo. Lágrimas de alegría y alivio.
Ella me ayuda a ponerme de pie y me abraza, y escucho sus sollozos felices contra mi cabello. Estamos girando y bailando de nuevo y pronto se nos unen varios otros de la cueva. Los niños saltan en los charcos, hombres y mujeres se abrazan y se besan. Recogen agua en ollas para llevar a la cueva por si la lluvia desaparece de nuevo.
Me recuesto y cierro los ojos, el olor y el tamborileo de la lluvia fuera de la cueva me arrullan para dormir, y una sonrisa se forma en mi rostro. Estoy casi allí, en la tierra de hierba verde, animales y ríos que no tienen fin cuando mis ojos se abren de golpe a un viento frío lamiendo mi cara, dejando el sabor de grava mojada en mi lengua. Veo sombras moviéndose en la pared de la cueva, demasiado rápidas para ser humanas y entonces comienzan los gritos. Voces llenas de pánico, hombres, mujeres y niños tratando de escapar de las sombras que los cazan. Ruidos húmedos de carne desgarrada y el sonido burbujeante de gargantas llenas de sangre.
Mi madre corre a mi lado y se arrodilla frente a mí.
—¡Escúchame, niña! Él no te verá, pero puede sentirte. Necesitas quedarte quieta y esperar, no dejes que te atrape. ¡Sobrevive! ¿Me oyes? Prométeme que sobrevivirás. Todo depende de ti ahora. Encuentra al lobo y consigue el tuyo. Es la única manera de derrotarlo.
Ojos dorados aparecen detrás de mi madre. Ella lo siente, pero en lugar de luchar, gritar o intentar escapar, tiene sus ojos fijos en los míos y lentamente inclina su cabeza hacia un lado, exponiendo su cuello.
