"Hey, Lucky! Você pode vir me ajudar com isso?"

Girei e olhei ao redor até meus olhos encontrarem Mike do outro lado da sala. O adolescente desengonçado e magricela estava lutando para carregar uma caixa sobrecarregada de xaropes da porta para a área dos fundos. Com um sorriso, caminhei até ele e baguncei os cabelos ruivos e enferrujados no topo de sua cabeça antes de pegar a caixa de suas mãos sem esforço.

Ele bateu as mãos juntas, rolou os ombros dramaticamente para trás e me lançou um sorriso cheio de dentes, "Nossa, obrigado. Tão bom ter um homem como você por perto."

"Ah, sei lá," revirei os olhos e me afastei para a área de armazenamento dos fundos, "Mais tarde você vai estar reclamando de ter uma garota 'gata' como eu roubando todas as suas gorjetas. Decida-se, Mikey Mike."

Meu coração pode ter dado um salto. Será que era realmente quarta-feira? Como pude esquecer enquanto me preparava para o trabalho hoje? Eu sempre pelo menos tentava parecer decente às quartas-feiras. "Na verdade," uma voz profunda disse do outro lado do balcão e senti meu rubor se aprofundar pelo menos dois tons enquanto a sala de repente ficava muito quente, "Eu apenas disse a ela meu nome e que achei ela bonita. Ainda não descobri o dela, no entanto."

Minha boca ficou seca. Vi Mike coçar a cabeça, "Desculpe por isso, Wyatt. O que posso preparar para você?"

"Sem problemas, Mike," Wyatt sorriu um sorriso deslumbrante e perfeito e senti minha respiração prender, "Vou querer o de sempre," ele se inclinou levemente para frente, "e seu nome desta vez, linda."

Demorei muito para perceber que ele estava falando comigo agora e não com o Mike. Ele riu enquanto eu abria e fechava a boca repetidamente, como um peixe fora d'água, e juro que poderia ter derretido. Estava quente e maravilhoso. Meu coração disparou quando disse tremulamente, "Me chamam de Lucky. Está escrito no meu crachá. Não sabe ler?"

Espera, eu acabei de insultá-lo?

O sorriso de Wyatt desapareceu lentamente, até desaparecer por completo. Mike levantou a mão e deu um tapa na testa. Olhei para Wyatt e abri a boca para falar, e ele apenas balançou a cabeça, "Você se importaria de começar meu café, Lucky?" Juro que vi seus olhos olharem para minhas mãos trêmulas por um momento, "Tenho um lugar para ir."

Mike e eu tivemos um turno bastante tranquilo depois do constrangimento com Wyatt - tanto em termos de clientes quanto de nossa conversa. Exceto por um rápido, "você achou que insultá-lo era flertar com ele?"


Fechamos o café por volta das 17h, como em qualquer outro dia. Também como em qualquer outro dia, Mike pegou sua bicicleta e partiu pela rua. Ele estava a cerca de um quarteirão de distância quando se virou e acenou adeus. Acenei de volta e lhe dei um pequeno sorriso, embora a interação com Wyatt ainda estivesse atormentando minha mente.

Isso não era um filme, era a vida real. Insultar um cara bonito não levava a romances ardentes. E eu nem queria um romance ardente, então por que estava agindo interessada? Espera. Quem eu estava enganando? Interessada? Eu estava agindo como uma criança estúpida que não sabia nada sobre caras ou a vida em geral. Aquilo não era eu, e certamente não era como eu agia com estranhos.

Enquanto terminava de trancar a porta com esse fluxo de pensamentos sem sentido, tentei sacudir a cabeça fisicamente para clarear um pouco. Consegui lembrar da pequena lista de coisas que precisava fazer antes de me acomodar para a noite: compras, banho, jantar, verificar a segurança... Dormir. Repetir pela eternidade.

A ida ao supermercado foi quase tão curta quanto a lista de compras que eu podia pagar com as gorjetas do dia. Voltei para o café. Caminhei pelo beco à esquerda do prédio e subi as escadas de metal enferrujadas que levavam ao quarto de armazenamento no andar de cima.

Adam e Sandy foram gentis o suficiente para me deixar ficar lá nos últimos dois (quase três) anos. A porta rangeu ao abrir e fiz uma nota mental de que deveria pegar o WD-40 lá embaixo antes de fechá-la firmemente e trancá-la de novo. Caixas, eletrodomésticos quebrados e poeira espalhavam-se por todo o espaço. No centro do quarto estava minha cama. Tinha uma cômoda improvisada (uma caixa velha) à direita e um criado-mudo que também servia como minha cozinha à esquerda. Abrigava dois pratos e um micro-ondas que me permitiam sobreviver. Não era muito, mas era melhor do que nada. Depois de tanto tempo, era praticamente um lar e eles eram minha família.

Joguei minhas chaves e sacolas de compras na cama e segui em direção ao banheiro. O banheiro tinha um vaso sanitário e uma pequena pia de lavanderia que só tinha água quente. Fiquei confortável e liguei a água. Minha ansiedade estava alta enquanto começava a tomar banho.

Depois de quase três anos sem ver ninguém que eu conhecia, estava ficando confortável. Pelo amor de Deus, eu estava tentando flertar. No que eu estava pensando? Não podia criar raízes. Estava sendo idiota. Se eu quisesse agir daquela forma, ficar confortável e baixar a guarda, precisava sair dos Apalaches.

Não estava mais perto do que estava há três anos. Tinha ficado fácil fingir que aquilo era quem eu sou - uma barista de cidade pequena que flerta com os locais e não vai a lugar nenhum.
