Chapter 1
"Acabou?" Racheal perguntou.
"Sim." Maxwell respondeu, e ela correu para seus braços feliz.
Ela o abraçou apertado, o momento parecia surreal.
Havia rumores de que a guerra que devastou o país por cinco anos estava chegando ao fim.
Até mesmo Maxwell, um guarda do palácio no alto do palácio presidencial, havia dito isso a ela, mas era quase demais para se esperar.
"Isso parece surreal. Agora podemos sair e realmente viver" ela disse suavemente, afastando-se do abraço.
"É sobre isso que eu vim falar com você." Maxwell disse.
"Mesmo?" Racheal disse, meio pulando de excitação. "Podemos sair hoje?" Ela perguntou nervosa e empolgada.
Maxwell a conduziu até um dos sofás em seu quarto luxuosamente decorado e se sentou. Ela o seguiu apressadamente e se sentou ao lado dele.
Ela voltou seu olhar para o rosto dele, esperando ansiosamente. E pela primeira vez, teve a sensação de que algo estava terrivelmente errado.
"Maxwell" Racheal disse com um pouco de medo. Ele estava evitando seus olhos e suava apesar do ar condicionado fresco em seu quarto.
"Não há uma boa maneira de dizer isso. Estou terminando." Ele disse.
"Você está deixando seu cargo." Ela disse esperançosa, porque esse era o plano. Ele deixaria seu cargo e eles fugiriam juntos para outro país para começar uma família.
Mas a pergunta soou tola até para seus próprios ouvidos. Maxwell não pareceria tão desconfortável se estivesse seguindo o plano.
"Não. Estou terminando nosso relacionamento." Ele disse, virando-se finalmente para encará-la. "Não podemos continuar com o plano."
Racheal sentiu-se desmoronando. "Você prometeu." Ela disse, o sentimento de traição torcendo suas entranhas.
"Você prometeu. Isso era o que eu esperava há anos, essa é a única razão pela qual continuei vivendo." Ela acrescentou. "Você não pode mudar de ideia."
"É impossível. Você encontrará outro homem. Você encontrará felicidade." Ele disse, levantando-se.
"Você jurou que me amava, prometeu continuar me amando." Ela disse, sentindo o calor de suas lágrimas não compartilhadas começando a queimar a parte de trás de sua garganta agora.
"Como você pode me amar e querer me abandonar nesta situação? Por que me dar vontade de viver e depois tirá-la?" Ela perguntou com raiva.
Então ela fez uma pausa, e seus olhos se arregalaram. "Alguém descobriu sobre nós, você está sendo ameaçado?" Ela perguntou, aproximando-se dele.
"Não." Ele disse com força, recuando. Ele parecia ofendido com suas palavras.
"Então o que é? Por que essa decisão repentina? Eu te vi há dois dias e estava tudo bem." Ela disse frustrada.
"Estava?" Ele perguntou com um sorriso amargo.
"Maxwell, por que você está agindo assim? Por favor, me diga." Ela disse, e perdeu o controle sobre suas lágrimas. Elas fluíram livremente, mas ela não sentiu vergonha, ainda era Maxwell.
Era Maxwell que conhecia seus pensamentos mais sombrios e a profundidade de sua realidade embaraçosa.
Ela finalmente chegou à conclusão.
"Você não quer mais se envolver em tudo isso, certo? O drama da família presidencial é demais para você, e por que se exilar por causa da filha indesejada de todos os filhos dele." Ela disse.
Pelo modo como ele continuava a observá-la em silêncio, ela percebeu que não estava longe da verdade.
Ele não estava mais na defensiva.
Ela se sentou pesadamente no sofá. Nunca imaginou que este dia chegaria. Nem por um minuto, em seus momentos de dúvida, ela pensou nessa possibilidade.
Ela temia serem pegos, temia um acidente que os matasse no caminho, ou serem condenados a uma vida de pobreza, e mesmo essas coisas não eram tão aterrorizantes porque Maxwell estaria com ela.
Nunca pensou que ele desistiria.
"Você vai encontrar a felicidade novamente, Racheal." Ele disse, soando um pouco triste.
Não doce Racheal. Minha doce Racheal era como ele sempre a chamava. Ele se virou para sair.
"Não vá." Ela disse, "Por favor!" Ela implorou. Ele nem diminuiu o passo.
Ela se levantou apressadamente e desabou no chão, agarrando o pé dele.
Ela já podia sentir a escuridão a engolindo, um calafrio percorreu seu corpo ao pensar no seu destino se o deixasse sair por aquela porta.
Ela se agarrou desesperadamente ao pé dele.
"Por favor, não vá. Eu imploro. Por favor". Ela chorava enquanto ele lutava para puxar a perna. "Tenha piedade de mim, você sabe a vida a que está me condenando." Ela suplicou.
Ele se inclinou e a empurrou com força, finalmente se libertando. Ele saiu apressado pela porta como se o próprio diabo estivesse atrás dele.
Racheal permaneceu naquele lugar e soluçou. Soluços de partir o coração que sacudiam todo seu corpo.
Ela chorou e chorou, chorou pela sua falecida mãe, chorou pela vida que poderia ter tido, chorou por Maxwell e pela vida ao lado dele que acabou de perder.
Duas vezes, suas empregadas pessoais entraram e tentaram levantá-la, mas ela as afastou.
Ela finalmente se levantou quando o sol começou a se pôr lá fora. Ela ainda podia ouvir todo o barulho da multidão do lado de fora.
Sua empregada entrou com uma xícara de chá e ligou a televisão.
Racheal olhou para a xícara por um longo tempo, lembrando-se dos seus dias de adolescência. Quando sua madrasta a confinava no quarto como fazia agora, mas ordenava estritamente que nenhuma comida fosse levada para ela. E Racheal passava fome e fome.
E agora que estava mais velha, embora raramente passasse fome, ainda enfrentava esses confinamentos.
Sempre que sua madrasta estava irritada com alguma coisa, qualquer coisa, ela mandava os guardas do palácio a buscarem em qualquer lugar da cidade onde estivesse.
Eles a traziam de volta ao palácio e a trancavam em seu quarto enquanto seu pai fingia ser cego e surdo à situação.
Ele também não fez nada quando sua esposa a proibiu de conseguir um emprego em qualquer lugar do país.
Os flashes de luz da TV interromperam seus pensamentos. Ela lentamente se virou para ver seu pai apertando firmemente a mão do presidente do país com o qual estavam em guerra.
Ela leu a faixa na tela e ficou gelada.
Os dois presidentes prometeram unir seus filhos em casamento para fortalecer a união entre os países e assegurar aos cidadãos que a guerra realmente havia terminado.
