Edan O’Connor conducía a alta velocidad por la autopista en su Ferrari, iba apurado hacia su trabajo, se le había hecho tarde discutiendo con su novia, Vivian, de nuevo.

Cómo siempre, ella quería que Edan se quedara durmiendo a su lado hasta tarde, pero él debía ir a trabajar. Aunque Edan era un hombre con recursos, tenía responsabilidades, además, el dinero no se hacía solo.

Él estaba molesto con Vivian, esa mujer lo hacía perder las casillas, ella era malcriada y testaruda, pero cómo lo hacía enloquecer en la cama, por eso no era capaz de dejarla, él estaba loco por ella y aunque estaba molesto, de hecho, iba pensando qué detalle tener con ella para contentarla.

Edan observó la hora en el tablero, era muy tarde, aceleró el auto. Él debía dar el ejemplo en la empresa y ser puntual, puesto que, actualmente, se desempeñaba como el CEO de la empresa INCAPITAL, dedicada a las inversiones, la cual fue fundada por su padre. Pero debido a una enfermedad cardíaca, Erick, el padre de Edan, se había retirado para ceder el puesto a su hijo.

Esa era una empresa muy grande, con varias sedes y sus hermanos menores se hacían cargo de otras sucursales, pero la sede principal, había caído bajo la responsabilidad del hijo mayor.

Una llamada resonó, Edan se detuvo en un semáforo y observó el tablero, era su madre, él suspiró frustrado, su madre Angélica, podía llegar a ser bastante… Absorbente. Pero tenía que contestar, si no se tendría que aguantar un jarabe de lengua después.

Presionó el botón del tablero para contestar la llamada y al cambiar la luz del semáforo, arrancó.

— ¿Edan?. — Se escuchó en el altavoz.

— Buen día, madre.

— Edan, es urgente. — Su voz sonaba quebrada.

— ¿Qué sucede?. — Preguntó buscando un lugar donde detenerse, Edan tuvo un mal presentimiento.

— Es tu padre. — Soltó la mujer en un suspiro.

Alma Contreras estaba en medio de una clase, apenas comenzaba el día y ya estaba cansada, últimamente se esforzaba el doble en todo. Entre la universidad, el trabajo como mesera y ayudar a su madre con los quehaceres del hogar, se sentía tan agotada.

Pero no sé daría por vencida, sabía que algún día su esfuerzo valdría la pena y soñaba despierta con el día en que sería capaz de llevar a su madre junto a sus hermanitos a una nueva casa, lejos de su padre.

Era increíble como ese hombre que ella tanto había admirado y que alguna vez fue amable, pudo haber cambiado tan drásticamente luego de haber pedido su empleo. Sí, pasó mucho tiempo buscando una nueva fuente de ingresos, pero ya había parecido perder el espíritu de lucha que él mismo le había inculcado a su hija desde muy pequeña.

Ahora se dedicaba a nada más que beber y apostar. Y lo poco que sacaba de las apuestas lo usaba para comprar más bebida. No solo era eso, sino que últimamente se había puesto agresivo, parecía que el mundo en qué ahora él estaba, lo había consumido y terminado de convertir en una persona completamente diferente de quien Alma recordaba.

Pero por lo menos, estaba su madre, Luz Rivas, quien ahora se había convertido en el pilar de la familia y trabajaba duramente desempeñándose en la limpieza de hogares para mantener a su familia.

Alma estaba en medio de una clase y no se había percatado de la infinidad de llamadas perdidas que había en su teléfono celular, que estaba guardado en su bolso en modo silencioso.

Al terminar la hora de clases y revisar el aparato, una fuerte corazonada la atacó, había demasiadas llamadas de su casa y del teléfono personal de su madre, algo tuvo que haber ocurrido.

Desesperada, Alma busco un sitio aislado y llamo antes que nada a su madre, el teléfono fue contestado por una extraña voz.

— ¿Buen día?. — Se escuchó al otro lado de la línea, Alma miró la pantalla, verificando que hubiera llamado al número correcto. Sí, era el número de su madre, puso el teléfono nuevamente en su oído.

— Por favor con Luz Rivas.

— Es usted su hija, Alma, ¿No es así?.

— Sí.

— Disculpe, nos hemos estado intentando comunicar con usted, mi nombre es Abigaíl, soy la enfermera de turno del hospital central, su madre está ingresada aquí.

— ¡¿Qué?!.

— Intentamos contactar a un familiar, llamamos al número que aparece registrado como casa, pero en vista de que el marido de la señora Luz está indispuesto y sus otros hijos son menores, ella nos indicó que podríamos comunicarnos con usted.

— Sí, sí. — Alma sintió como su cuerpo comenzó a estremecerse y las lágrimas se le juntaban en los ojos. — Voy de inmediato.

Edan llegó al hospital central rápidamente, todos lo miraban sorprendidos, no todos los días se veía en un centro hospitalario público, a un hombre llegar en un Ferrari, usando un traje de diseñador.

Corrió hasta la recepción, preguntando por el señor Erick O’Connor, la enfermera que se sonrojó con la sola presencia del hombre, lo envió hasta el tercer piso, su padre estaba ingresado en cuidados intensivos. Edan apresuró el paso y al entrar al pasillo indicado, vio a su madre hecha un mar de lágrimas, quien lo recibió con un abrazo.

— ¡Mamá! ¿Qué fue lo que pasó?.

— Tu padre… Tu padre tuvo un ataque. — Explicó la mujer entre lágrimas.

— ¿Cómo está?. — Preguntó Edan separándola de su cuerpo, para verla a los ojos. Ella comenzó a negar al tiempo que las lágrimas salían.

— Está muy mal, los médicos dicen que lo más probable es que no supere este episodio.

— ¡¿Qué?! ¡¿Y qué hace aquí?! ¡¿Por qué no está en la clínica?!.

— Íbamos camino a la empresa, él me insistió mucho en que quería pasar a dar una vuelta y cuando le dio el ataque… Este era el centro médico más cercano.

Un médico se acercaba en ese momento, traía una carpeta en las manos, la cual revisaba con mucho interés y se detuvo frente a Angélica.

— ¿Señora O’Connor?. — El médico la llamó y ella asintió. — Logramos estabilizar a su esposo, sin embargo, eso no significa que todo vaya a estar bien, por el momento, tenemos que esperar y confiar en que el señor O’Connor resista.

— ¡¿Qué?! ¡¿Solo eso van a decir?! ¡¿Qué hay que esperar?! ¡Hagan algo!. — Interrumpió Edan, desesperado con la tranquilidad con que el doctor hablaba.

— ¿Señor…?. — El médico lo miró con cierto recelo.

— Edan O’Connor, soy hijo del paciente. — Se presentó, con cierto enojo, sin siquiera tenderle la mano.

— Entiendo su preocupación, sin embargo, ya hemos hecho todo lo que está en nuestras manos, lo demás, queda de parte de él. — Terminó el doctor. Edan se pasó la mano por el rostro, frustrado.

— ¡Tenemos que trasladarlo! Considero que aquí no están haciendo lo suficiente, necesito que preparen su traslado a la clínica inmediatamente, ¡Pagaré lo que sea necesario!. — Indicó Edan, mostrando su descontento.

— Señor O’Connor, no se trata del dinero que tenga, su padre está en un estado muy delicado para un traslado, si lo hacemos, lo estaríamos condenando. — Refuto el doctor, disgustado.

— Po… ¿Podemos verlo?. — Balbuceó Angélica, interviniendo. Ella sabía cómo era su hijo y seguramente todo terminaría en una discusión con el personal médico.

— Por el momento, estará aislado y descansando. En cuanto sea posible, los haremos pasar. — Contestó el doctor, usando un tono un poco más apacible hacia la mujer.

El médico se retiró. Edan volvió a abrazar a su madre, que comenzó a tener espasmos provocados por la crisis de llanto. La impotencia comenzaba a llenarlo, él deseaba poder hacer algo más por su padre.

Luego de una larga hora en el pasillo, Edan decidió que necesitaba estirar las piernas, dar una vuelta por el lugar o hacer algo, lo que sea. Recordó que en la recepción había varias máquinas expendedoras, así que le avisó a su madre que iría por un par de cafés.

Bajó y comenzó a servir los dos vasos, cuando por casualidad volteó hacia la recepción y vio entrar a una hermosa jovencita corriendo, ella llevaba ropa humilde y una mochila colgada en su hombro, por lo que, dedujo que seguramente se trataba de una estudiante, la joven se notaba desesperada. Ella llegó preguntando a la enfermera, quien le dio algunas indicaciones y de nuevo, salió corriendo hacia los ascensores.
