“Already over three thousand subscribers and counting,” Lainey said from her Zoom screen on my phone.

I yawned, grateful that S hadn’t posted anything yet. I was too tired to deal. “Yeah, it’s great.”

“You OK?”

“Exhausted. I had to promise Zane I wouldn’t make Chloe and Grace influencers.”

“Any ideas for your next topic?”

“About a thousand, but I’m thinking about the way wolves do hand-me-downs while humans like thrift stores.”

“What’s a thrift store?”

“I’ll tell you tomorrow. Goodnight.”

“Night.”

I barely managed to get the phone off and onto my nightstand before my eyes closed.

I felt welcomed by the forest as I stood on all fours, sniffing the night and almost blinded by the near-full moon and brilliant stars.

I was disappointed when the fox showed up. I was getting a little tired of killing it. Nevertheless, I set my shoulders and was about to chase it when something new wafted through my nose. It was sweet and heady, fresh and wild.

I forgot about the fox and turned to follow the scent. I trotted through the forest without fear, lured by the promise of something wonderful to match the aroma that filled my muzzle and lifted my soul.

I heard a distant howl and began to run. My paws ate up the ground, and everything around me seemed to bow and bend out of my way. I had never been so alive, and if I’d been in human form I would have laughed in joy.

Another howl, this one closer, and I looked up to a cliff above me. There, silhouetted against the moon, I saw a black alpha wolf with his head thrown back. The howl reached me clearly, making my ears burn and my heart race.

I stopped running and sought a path up the cliff face. There, I spotted one between two rows of trees, as though someone had trampled down the undergrowth especially for me. The path was steep, but my claws caught on the stones and half-buried roots. Dust filled my mouth, but I could still smell the scene of the black wolf and climbed all the harder and faster.

I looked up and could see him above me, staring down with his impassive sapphire eyes. I wanted to see them fill with passion. I wanted to make him want me the way I wanted him.

I reached the top and scrambled over the ledge. I shook myself free of dirt and leaves and confronted him.

He stared at me, then lunged. I dodged easily. He chuffed and then threw his head back again and howled. I looked to the moon and joined him.

When my head came back down, I saw him running away. I gave instant chase, hurtling through the branches and scrub. Something caught on my fur, but it couldn’t slow me down.

He veered to the right and then left. Growling in glee, I stayed straight, leaping over a fallen log and dodging a massive oak. I was gaining.

Then he was gone. I halted with a whine. I sniffed the air, but that incredible scent had gone. I looked everywhere around me, but there was no sign.

And then I heard it: a heart was beating, pumping out blood with each deep boom announcing proof of life. I closed my eyes and turned my head, zeroing in on the sound’s source.

There, to my left and perhaps a few yards ahead of me: I could tell it was coming from there. Sinking down low, I opened my eyes in the brilliance of the night and crept closer. I put not a paw wrong, avoiding the rustling leaves and brittle branches.

Silent as the grave, I inched my way forward, locked in on the heartbeat ahead. I knew he was waiting, wondering if I knew where he was. I knew he was hoping I would find him.

Another step, and then another, and I was so close that the scent, somehow suppressed, returned to fill my mouth. I drooled and stepped just a bit nearer to my target.

Roaring, a black figure leapt at me, knocking me off my legs and almost rolling me over on my back. Instinctively, I kept the motion going until I was back on my paws. Jaws snapped at my shoulder, but I twisted away. My ears rang with another roar, but I howled back and made a lunge of my own, almost catching his foreleg in my teeth.

We both backed off and circled, and he was magnificent, his black fur almost blue, his proud stance a poem in the starlight.

I woke up, hands clawing at my sheets. Without thought, I rose from my bed and prowled out into the hallway. It wasn’t far to the door I wanted.

Inside his bedroom, I watched him sleep, a dark form under the covers, unsuspecting.

But he woke up as I neared, I could tell. I kept walking forward.

“Sarah?” I heard him whisper. “What is it?”

Without a word, I pulled off his comforter and sheet, revealing him to me. I crawled up the bed until I was above him, and his blue eyes glittered in the moonlight coming through his window.

I pressed down, and his body answered mine instantly. I removed my clothes and lowered the waistband of his nightwear.

“Sarah?”

“Quiet,” I muttered. What did we need words for? I positioned myself and sank down. That was all that needed to be said.

We fell into an automatic rhythm, and my body sang with the pleasure of having him inside me. I arched my back and let my head roll to expose my neck. A hand came up around it to caress my face, and the warmth of his touch made me feel so safe that I never worried about being exposed, of showing my naked body atop his, however well his werewolf eyes could see.

I reached my peak quickly, and then another followed before I was ready. I gasped and bore down on him until he moaned and shuddered.

Totally spent, I all but collapsed on top of him. My brain was fuzzy with happiness, and as his arms came up and around me, I was content in a way I had never felt before.

The thought that I had no way of knowing how many more times we could touch like this tried to intrude on my elation, but I pushed it away easily enough.

Right this moment, I had everything I wanted. Not being able to keep it was a worry for the morning.
