Chapter 228

Logan

The roar of my car’s engine was a thunderous backdrop to the chaos unfolding around me. The streets of the city blurred past as I raced towards the race track, my every instinct screaming that Ella was there. My wolf was on high alert, bristling with the same urgency that was gripping me.

“Faster, Logan, the cops are coming!” my wolf urged, his voice a constant presence in my mind.

I glanced in the rearview mirror, catching sight of the flashing lights of a police car weaving through traffic in hot pursuit. I was, after all, going well above the speed limit—a hundred miles per hour in the middle of the city.

My grip on the steering wheel tightened, the leather groaning beneath the strain of my tense fingers as I cursed under my breath. I couldn’t afford to get caught, not now.

“We can’t get caught, not when Ella needs us,” I said through gritted teeth, swerving to avoid a car that had braked suddenly in front of me.

As I swerved, the cop car sped up behind me, his sirens blaring through the night. I could see him in the rearview mirror, his eyes laser-focused on me. He wasn’t going to let up, and I didn’t blame him. But I couldn’t stop. If I got pulled over, it would ruin everything. There was no time for a ticket, no time to explain everything to the police, no time to even potentially get arrested.

And so, gritting my teeth and preparing to face the consequences, I pressed my foot down on the gas, pushing my car to go even faster. I wove my way through traffic, speeding through a red light up ahead.

The longer this went on, the more cop cars were added onto the pursuit—and the faster I went, pushing my poor red car to its very limits.

“Sorry, old girl,” I whispered to the metal beast as I pushed it faster. The engine was sure to give out after this, and I was certain that the tires would be shot. But none of that mattered, not when Ella’s life was on the line.

The police, however, were relentless. They tried swerving around me, cutting me off at intersections and blaring commands for me to stop over their speakers. But they didn’t know about my history with racing, and they had no idea just how fast this car could go.

“You know they’ll throw you in jail for something like this,” my wolf cautioned, his tone a mixture of worry and adrenaline. “This is a high speed chase at this point!”

“I’m sure they will, and frankly, I don’t care,” I shot back as I accelerated down a narrow side street, just barely missing a cop car that tried to block my entrance. “If it means getting Ella back, then getting arrested is worth it.”

The street was a tight fit, the old buildings looming over me like silent spectators to this high-stakes chase. I could hear the sirens wailing closer now, the sound echoing off the walls. But I didn’t relent; I only pushed the car harder, the engine screaming in response.

“Sharp turn up ahead!” my wolf warned.

I braced myself, downshifting as I approached the corner. The tires screeched in protest as I made the turn, barely missing a lamppost. The police cars followed, their own tires squealing against the asphalt.

“Logan, this is madness,” my wolf growled. “But I can’t deny it’s exhilarating.”

A wry smile tugged at my lips despite the situation. “Glad you’re enjoying the ride,” I quipped, weaving through the traffic. The city was a maze, but I knew these streets like the back of my hand. I was reminded of my days as a teenager, when I had first gotten my license and used to speed through the city streets in the dead of night. I never got caught, though; but it seemed like I might get caught tonight, the one night when it was imperative that nothing got in my way.

Up ahead, a roadblock loomed, police cars parked with their lights flashing ominously. My heart pounded in my chest, a frantic drum beat that matched the pace of the chase.

“Brace for impact,” I muttered, eyeing the gap between the police cars.

“Are you insane?” my wolf yelped. “You can’t possibly think—”

But I was already committed. I accelerated, aiming for the gap. The car fit through, just barely, the mirrors scraping against the police cars as I passed. The sound of metal on metal was a harsh sound in the quiet night, and both of my sideview mirrors went flying. I cringed at the damage to my poor car, but none of it mattered right now. What mattered was that the race track was close, and I needed to safe Ella.

Behind me, I heard the chaos as the police cars collided with each other in their attempt to follow. But I didn’t look back. The race track was close now, so close I could almost taste it.

“Almost there,” I breathed, my eyes scanning the horizon for the familiar outline of the race track. The adrenaline was a fire in my veins, burning away all of my fear.

But then, another roadblock appeared, this one more formidable than the last. The tall metal spikes loomed, threatening to not only destroy my tires but also send me careening across the road. My heart sank. There was no way around it this time.

“Logan, think!” my wolf urged. “You can’t just barrel through this one!”

I scanned the area, desperately looking for an alternative route. Then, I saw it—a narrow alley to the right, just wide enough for the car to fit through now that I had no mirrors.

Without a second thought, I swerved toward the alley, the car barely squeezing through. The sound of scraping metal made my heart wrench, but I pushed on, the alleyway opening up to a back street.

“We’re not out of this yet,” my wolf said, his voice tense.

“I know,” I replied, my eyes fixed on the road ahead. The race track was close now, though.

As I emerged onto the main road, the race track finally came into view, its large, imposing structure a beacon in the night. Relief washed over me, quickly replaced by a renewed sense of urgency.

But the police were still on my tail, their persistence unyielding. I could see more cars joining the chase, their lights a relentless pursuit in my rearview mirror.

“This is it,” I said, my voice steady despite the chaos. “We either save Ella now, or we go down trying.”

My wolf didn’t respond, but I could feel his determination mirroring my own. The prospect of jail, or at the very least losing my license for good, loomed on the horizon, but I didn’t care now. All that mattered was protecting Ella, my mate, at all costs.

As the race track loomed closer, I prepared for what might be the final showdown.

My foot pressed all the way down on the gas pedal, colliding with the soft carpet beneath. This was it. This was as fast as she would go; I just hoped it would be fast enough to save Ella before the police caught me and arrested me.

“Ella, I’m coming for you,” I whispered, urging the car to go faster than ever. “Just hold on a little longer.”
