Chapter 209

Carol’s POV

“The baby is okay, Miss Carol,” a new voice said from the other side of the room.

A man in a long white trench coat walked across the room and towards me; he was an older gentleman with a kind face and warm brown eyes. He had a smile on his lips and held a clipboard firmly in his hands.

“I’m Doctor Edmond,” he said politely. “I’m the head doctor in this hospital and I assure you, both you and your child are in good hands. You are safe and you can rest assured that your baby is healthy as can be.”

Relief flooded me as I lay back on the bed, my heart finally slowing.

“You were given a large amount of aphrodisiac, but it was harmless to your baby,” he continued as he glanced at the clipboard.

“Aphrodisiac?” I asked, glancing at Aiden who was looking furious. He was clenching his jaw and gripping the side of the bed so hard I heard it cracking under the pressure. His eyes flashed from dark to gold, and I knew he was having trouble controlling his wolf.

“It’s a sex drug,” the doctor explained. “It’s used to enhance your sexual urgencies. The dosage that was given to you was so high that it pretty much acted as a roofie as well, which was why you had no control over your body and eventually passed out.”

I swallowed hard; I was given a sex drug and then that rogue wolf was going to have his way with me. I felt sick to my stomach, and I understood why Aiden was so mad at the fact. I reached over to him and touched his arm gently. I needed him to know that I was right here and that I was okay.

He seemed to relax from my touch, but not by much.

“How long had I been out for?” I asked.

“It’s been almost 8 hours,” the doctor told me. “We were able to flush the drugs out of your system pretty quickly and we let you rest for the last several hours while the IV kept you nourished. I personally kept a watch on you and your baby to ensure that both were healthy. Your mate hadn’t left your side as well.”

I glanced at Aiden again and I felt a ping of gratitude towards him. My heart swelled and I couldn’t help but smile softly in his direction, even though he was trying hard to keep himself under control.

“I really appreciate it,” I told him. “I’ll let you rest for a bit longer and then I’ll get your discharge paperwork ready. You should be able to leave here tonight.”

Without another word, he turned and left. I wasn’t along with Aiden for long because soon there was a light knock on the door. Seconds later, it was opening, and Oliver poked his head into the room. When his eyes landed on mine and he saw that I was awake, he grinned and pushed the door further open, revealing Fiona who had tears in her eyes.

She shrieked when she saw that I was awake and she rushed into the room, throwing her arms around me and hugging me. I whimpered at the rough touch; my body was still sore, and I was a bit dizzy from all the drugs that were fading from my system.

“I was so worried about you,” she said softly. “I’m going to kill whoever drugged you.”

“Do we have any leads?” Aiden asked; his wolf seemed to have simmered down and he was no longer clutching the bedpost as if his life was depending on it.

“She covered her tracks well,” Oliver muttered. “She deleted all evidence, and her backup had been wiped. But I believe you when you say you think it's her.”

“Who?” I asked, looking between the two of them.

“Jenna,” Fiona was the one to answer, folding her arms across her chest. “I don’t trust that bitch and I know she had something to do with this.”

I nodded in agreement, glad that my best friend could see right through her and that her mind was thinking the same thing I was.

“There’s no evidence though,” Oliver said, sighing. “She got rid of everything, and she refuses to talk to me. I think she knows I’ll be able to see through her lies if she does talk to me, so she’s been avoiding anyone that came from the Capitol.”

“What about Alison?” I asked. “Did you get anything more from her? I know she’s afraid of treason, but maybe she knows more information that could help us.”

Oliver shook his head.

“I don’t think she knows any information,” he told me. “She was just as shocked about the drug in the tea as the rest of us. She only suspected that it was Jenan because of Jenna’s reputation and the fact that she knew that Jenna could get her hands on any drug if she truly wanted to. When she was in the kitchen, she thought it was weird that Jenna was just hanging around and asking her questions. After Jenna left, she saw this white powder stuff on the counter. There was very little of it and Alison thought that maybe it was just powder or something. She cleaned it up and went about her day… now she’s realizing it must have been drugs.”

“That’s why she suspects that Jenna was the one responsible?” I asked.

He nodded.

“She’s worried that if she goes around talking about it, she’ll get in trouble. I told her she can trust us. I can’t exactly go to the King and tell him that one of his maids suspects that his daughter drugged his other daughter.”

I nodded.

“After what happened with Monica, I don’t think it’s a good idea to involve Alison anyway,” I admitted. “She already gave us enough information and I fear she’s right. Jenna drugged me whether we can actually prove it or not.”

“That bitch,” Fiona muttered; we all nodded in response. “We can’t just let her get away with this.”

As much as I knew I needed to be wary of Jenna, she wasn’t the one I was worried about. It was her mother. I had no doubt in my mind that Queen Elizabeth put Jenna up to this because she wanted me out of the picture. My conversation with the Goddess slowly came back to me over time and she had warned me that the Queen was dangerous and that she was the one I truly needed to stop.

“I told King Bennet that I would give him a call,” Aiden said as he stood from the bed. “I’m going to do that real quick and then I’ll grab you some food.”

I smiled gratefully at him; I wasn’t sure if would be able to stomach any food right now, but I had a baby to think about and he or she was probably starving. I touched my belly with the tips of my fingers and sighed contently.

Aiden kissed the top of my head before nodding at Oliver and Fiona; then, he left the room.

Fiona sat on the edge of my bed; her eyes still filled with worry when she looked at me.

“How are you feeling?” She asked me. “Apparently the number of drugs in your system could have been lethal.”

“I’m feeling fine,” I told her. “Just drained.”

“Hey, babe, how about you go to the cafeteria and grab some food,” Oliver said, kissing the side of Fiona’s head.

She frowned at him.

“By myself?” She asked, raising her brows.

He gave a lopsided grin.

“I’ll join you in a few minutes; I’m going to check on Aiden and make sure he’s good.”

She stared at him for a moment, not sure if she should believe him or not. I could tell she had questions in her eyes, and she bit her lower lip, chewing on it for a beat too long. I knew trusting Oliver became difficult for Fiona. She was scared of putting her heart on the line and putting her faith in a man, even if he was her fated mate.

But eventually, she nodded. He gave her a hug and kissed her cheek lovingly; she seemed to have relaxed and then gave me a small smile.

“I’ll be back in a bit,” she told me.

I nodded and watched as she left the room; Oliver stayed behind, just like I knew he would. I could tell he wanted to talk to me alone and that’s why he sent Fiona away.

“What’s wrong?” I asked him.

He turned to look at me and I could see the worry in his eyes before he said anything.

“I need your help with something,” he finally said after a beat of silence.

“What do you need?” I asked him.

He took a deep breath and stepped closer to me, dropping his voice to a low whisper so nobody else would hear him.

“I want to propose to Fiona.”
