Chapter 50

Lily & Harper

Lily storms into the Silvertail mansion, the door shaking in the doorframe from her forceful slam. She throws her purse to the ground. It slides against the marble floor, hitting the wall.

“Darling? Is that you?” Harper’s voice echoes from the nearby study. Lily stomps towards the direction of her mother’s voice. She enters the study with crossed arms, glaring at Harper. “What is it?”

“Sebastian and Miranda,” Lily spits the words out in disgust.

“What about them?” Harper sets her book down, standing from the plush couch beneath her. Lily rolls her eyes, shrugging her jacket off, and tossing it to the side. It falls on the floor, ruining the room’s spotless appearance.

“You know how I had the meeting that Miranda called? Well, he only took her side! He didn’t even bother to let me defend myself like he usually does!” Lily whines. She plops onto the couch, kicking her legs in the form of a tantrum.

“Oh. Is that all?” Harper asks with an eye roll.

“No! They were pressed up on each other during the presentation! He actually touched her! He never touched me besides dragging me away!” Lily cries.

Harper looks to the side. She steps towards the window, looking outside. She narrows her eyes on a bird’s nest in the tree. A small bird is accompanied by a larger one. They nuzzle against each other, bracing the tough winds together. Harper scoffs.

“Do you think that Sebastian knows he’s Ella’s father?” Harper’s question causes Lily to sit up. She looks at her mother, one eyebrow raised.

“I don’t think he knows Ella exists, mother.”

“Of course, he knows she exists. He isn’t a fool. Evan and Ella attend the same school, after all,” Harper turns around, looking down at her daughter.

Lily sinks back into the couch, looking forward. Her fingers pick and pluck at stray strands of fabric. She flicks them to the side, not really caring if she’s making a mess or not.

“I don’t think he does. He believed me when I told him that the half-breed is a whore…that she slept with every guy she laid eyes on. I think he’s just trying to get his fill,” Lily remarks, glaring at the hem of her short skirt.

Harper chuckles. Lily’s head snaps to look at her mother. She turns her glare in her direction, a snarl forming on her face. Harper notices and waves her away.

“Oh stop that. You’ll get wrinkles,” she comments. Lily’s face immediately relaxes.

“Should we tell Daddy? I think he deserves to know what’s going on. Miranda is his daughter—”

Harper storms around the couch. She snatches Lily’s jaw, perfectly painted nails digging into her daughter’s soft and pale skin.

“Don’t you ever say that again! She is not his daughter! She is a mistake! She is a villain who is coming to destroy us all! She’s poison, Lily! Never forget it!” Spit flies from Harper’s mouth, landing on Lily’s face.

The younger woman whimpers, trying to pull her face away from her grasp. It only makes Harper hold on tighter.

“Yes! Fuck! I’m sorry mother!” Lily cries, tears flowing down her cheeks. “I won’t bring it up ever again! I promise! Please let me go!”

Harper holds onto Lily for a few extra seconds before letting her go. She cups Lily’s cheeks, gently wiping away the tears that stain her cheeks.

“Good girl,” she whispers. Harper pulls away and sits on the opposite couch, biting her lip. “We cannot involve your father just yet. He’s too close to the other Alphas. If we play our hand too soon, we’ll risk losing everything.”

“Well…what do we do then?” Lily rubs her cheeks, pouting. She pulls out a makeup mirror from her back pocket. She checks her face, wiping away leftover tears that leave her cheeks feeling sticky and red. Her eyes quickly become puffy, taking away her dewey look, and making her an image of a little girl.

“I may know someone,” Harper admits to her daughter. Lily drops her hand onto her lap, the makeup mirror slipping from her hand and onto the couch beside her.

“Really? Who! Have I met them?” Lily hopefully asks, her expression brightening ever so slightly.

Harper stares at her daughter. She cannot believe how she gave birth to such a submissive woman.

In this world, Harper believes that there are two types of wolves: prey and predators. When Harper was born, she knew that she was a predator, born to be a powerful werewolf.

Despite being born into a lower pack, one that the Alpha King is bound to laugh at when he hears their name, Harper clawed her way out from the shadows of mediocrity. She worked every day in order to shed her fur from her old tribe. She wanted to step into a new hide, fur that would be groomed and washed for her, a life that she deserved.

Harper was determined to get that life for herself no matter what.

During her pregnancy with Lily, all she ever wanted her to be was a predator just like her. This world is so cruel to prey like Miranda and her half-breed spawns.

It’s a fate that she wanted so desperately to shield her daughter from. How could it be her fault that her daughter turned out to be so desperate and needy? Harper blamed the Alpha for cursing her with bad genes. His first daughter turned out to be a mess anyway, so his track record isn’t the greatest to begin with.

Harper thinks about the Alpha wolf she met before she was stuck with the Silvertails. He was tall, strong, and handsome, everything you could have ever possibly wanted from an Alpha. He came from a great pack too, which had an even greater history of generals and nobles.

He had fled the country, though, leaving her behind to fend for herself in a horrible and unforgiving world. She thinks about him to this day.

Harper always knew he was fit to be King.

“Oh…just someone from my young adult life,” Harper sighs, looking to the side as images of her old fling flood her mind.

“Well…where is he? Can I meet him?” Lily asks, her eyes big and wide, filled with wonder. Harper shakes her head. “Why not? I want to meet him!”

Harper stands from the couch. She leans down and slaps her daughter across the face. Lily gasps, clutching her cheek. Her eyes sting, filling with tears.

“W-What did you do that for?” Lily breaks out into tears, her sobs filling the silence in the air. Harper towers over her daughter, eyes darkening behind her long lashes.

“If you ever speak a word of this conversation, if you even breathe a word of it to anyone, including your father, I swear on my life that I will feed you to the wolves. I will abandon you and let your damned Alpha King deal with scum like you.”

“Why are you being so cruel, mother?”

“Because the man that will help us will get us killed if anyone finds out about it. Do you understand? Our lives are on the line, Lily!” Harper speaks in a hushed whisper. “Do you understand?”

“Y-Yes, mother, I understand.” Lily stammers, fighting through her tears.

“Good. Now go to your room and fix your face. We’re having visitors over in an hour.” Harper turns away and exits the study, abandoning her daughter.
