Chapter 43

Elena. Mother-fucking Elena.

I was raging.

To my surprise, Dylan walked up behind me as soon as I read the last word on the open document. “Oh my god,” he said, freezing in his tracks.

“Dylan!” I said, momentarily forgetting about the mess in my excitement that he was there. He hadn’t messaged me since he saw the surveillance video the day before, and I was beginning to wonder if I’d ever see or hear from him again.

“Hazel, what happened?” He asked, the shock on his face growing as he took in the sight in front of him.

Oh, right, the mess. “I…I don’t know. I just got back from lunch and found it this way,” I said, my attention suddenly brought back to the current situation.

“Who would do such a thing?” He shook his head, his eyes wide and his brows knitted together in disbelief.

That I did know. “See that bitch behind you? The one smirking at us?” I pointed to Elena, who was not at all trying to hide her laughter.

Dylan turned and looked. He glared at her. Elena shook her head when she saw the look on his face, suddenly feigning innocence.

“Excuse me,” Dylan said to me. He stormed over to Elena and slammed his hands down on her desk. She jumped and the smirk immediately disappeared from her face.

“Hey there,” Dylan said, the fake-nice oozing from his words. “Did you do that to my friend’s desk over there?”

“No,” Elena said with a huff.

“No? Because your laughter says otherwise.”

“I didn’t do a damn thing,” Elena narrowed her eyes at him. “And you can’t prove otherwise.”

“Oh, but I can. And I will. And if you ever harass Ms. Whitaker again, I’ll be sure to help her sue you for everything you’ve got. I am very well versed on the laws on harassment in the workplace,” Dylan smiled at her. He took out a business card from the inside of his pocket and handed it to her. “Did I mention I’m a lawyer?”

Elena took the card and looked it over, her face as white as a ghost.

“Nice meeting you,” Dylan said. He walked back over to me.

My heart skipped a beat as I watched him walk back to me. I saw the scene playing out in slow motion. He ran one hand through his hair and stuck the other in his pocket. He looked me in the eyes, gave me a half smile, then shyly looked at the ground. I wanted to grab his face and press my lips to his for as long as he would let me.

I pulled my small notebook from my purse and fanned my face. It was suddenly very, very hot in that office.

“I don’t think she’ll be bothering you again,” Dylan said once he reached me.

I meant to respond. But all I could focus on was those lips that his words had just come from. I imagined myself grabbing the front of his suit jacket and pulling him in to the work rest area to uh, thank him.

“Haze? You okay?” Dylan interrupted my thoughts.

“Uh, yeah,” I shook the image from my head and blushed. “If you keep saving me like this I’m never going to be able to repay you.”

He laughed. God he was sexy when he laughed. “Well, maybe you can start your repayment by joining me…”

Logan ran up just before Dylan could finish his thought. He looked as frustrated as I felt by the interruption.

“Oh my god,” Logan’s eyes grew wide as he stared at the mess that was my desk. “Do you think this was…”

I nodded. “Yeah, I have no doubt that it was Elena.”

“I’ve already taken care of it,” Dylan said, annoyed.

Logan ignored him and stormed over to Elena. “Are you the one that destroyed Hazel’s desk?”

“No sir,” Elena said in a small voice, looking down at her desk.

“No? So if I pull surveillance footage I won’t see you on there?”

Elena’s face turned bright red. It may have been the first time I’ve ever seen her blush. I had to record this for Maria. I pulled out my phone.

“That’s what I thought,” Logan said. “I’m putting you on a week long, no pay suspension. If you ever pull anything like this again, I’ll be suspending you for good. Do I make myself clear?”

She nodded, still looking down.

“Good. Now get out of my sight,” Logan said.

As Logan walked towards me, I could swear it was deja vu. He was seemingly moving in slow motion, running one hand through his hair with the other in his pocket. He half-smiled at me, then gave me a wink.

I fanned myself faster. If it got any hotter in here I would have to go stick my face in the freezer in the pantry.

I bit my lip as I watched him approach. I realized I would also not mind kissing those plump, luscious lips of his either.

“I uh…excuse me,” I said as Logan got closer to me. I walked as fast as I could towards the women’s bathroom. Maria caught my eye from her desk and narrowed her brows at me. I nodded towards the bathroom and she got up to join me.

“Girl, what are you going through?” Maria asked once we were inside. “Why are you all sweaty?”

I splashed my face with water in the sink. I had to cool down, I’d never feel such a raw desire at work before. Or maybe anywhere, ever. After I dried my face, I recounted the events that happened with Elena moments earlier to Maria.

“Damn, I would’ve given anything to see Elena get her ass handed to her like that,” Maria said.

“Oh girl, I gotchu,” I held up my phone and smiled. “But more important than that. I am all sweaty because I just had two of the hottest men I have ever seen stand up for me. And that’s not the first time, either.”

“Wait, what? It’s not?” She said.

I told her about the night Dylan and Logan took up for me with Chance when he showed up in the parking garage drunk off his ass.

Maria’s eyes and smile grew wider and wider as I told that story. “Um, I think this may be a rom com, and you are the star,” she said with a grin.

“Me? A rom com star? Yeah right. I could never actually land a guy like either one of them. One of them is my boss and married, I might add,” I said. Then I smiled. “But it is a nice thought. Girl. I have never even had two hot men look my way, much less stand up for me.”

“Okay, that first part is not true. You’re a total babe,” Maria said. “I bet Elena is dying inside at the fact that they took up for you and didn’t fall for her instead.”

I laughed. “Oh yeah, that is definitely the best part.” I checked my face in the mirror. “Okay, I think I’ve calmed down enough to go back out there. I’ll text you later.”

I returned to my desk to find both Logan and Dylan were gone, and a maintenance man was just staring at my desk.

“Oh, don’t worry about that, I’ll figure it out,” I said to him.

He waved me off. “Nah, it’s no big deal. Two men just paid me very handsomely to take care of it.”
