Nos detuvimos frente a la vieja y destartalada casa, y a pesar del mar de melancolía que me había envuelto últimamente, sentí un atisbo de emoción. La casa no era nueva ni lujosa, pero era más de lo que había anticipado.

Nos habíamos mudado desde California, donde vivíamos en un apartamento de dos habitaciones en la peor parte de la ciudad. Caminar al trabajo cada día se había convertido en una pesadilla constante. Aunque agradecía la mudanza, no podía evitar esperar lo peor.

He estado viviendo con mi madre y su esposo durante tres años, y decir que lo odio es quedarse corto. Fui criada por mi increíble abuela durante la mayor parte de mi vida hasta que falleció hace unos años. Mi madre, que insiste en que la llame Lauren como si fuera una extraña que encontré en la calle, era la única pariente que quedaba para acogerme.

Salí de la tienda de la esquina sintiéndome confundida y cautelosa. Sus palabras no me daban mucha esperanza para la escuela mañana. Si este pueblo era tan pequeño como ella insinuaba, no pasaría desapercibida. Con solo un año más de secundaria, mi objetivo era escapar de Lauren y Darren en cuanto cumpliera dieciocho.
