Chapter 31

~Grace~

“I heard about something that will make you as happy as a puppy,” Alex told me with a mysterious smile on his face. He had asked me to walk with him through the gardens, and after being so nervous about last night's incident, I couldn’t refuse.

What if he found out? Or what if he knew already? I couldn’t say no, it would look too suspicious.

But something that would make me happy? I looked up at him curiously. Was he being serious?

“Aren’t you curious?” Alex asked, eyeing me, a twinkle in his eye.

“Yes, of course I am. Just tell me already,” I said, trying to put on a serious look.

He chuckled, seemingly amused by my reaction. “As you wish… I received the test results from the DNA sample you got of Liam.”

I gasped. Finally! It felt like it had taken forever.

I turned to Alex, grabbing his arm excitedly, stopping him. “Well, what is it? What did they say?”

If it truly was Liam’s child, then he had no chance of saving his reputation. It would be official that he cheated on me, and the entire werewolf world would know it.

I gripped tighter onto his arm, my heart pounding in anticipation. It seemed like Alex was drawing out this moment just to get a reaction out of me.

He smiled. “It’s his. Sophia is pregnant with Liam’s child.”

Oh my god. I let go of him, and clasped my hand over my mouth, turning away. I began pacing. This was it. This was the final puzzle piece! Once this evidence was out in the media, I could finally be free!

Although, the thought of this was a little… terrifying. What would I do after? I hadn’t thought about where I’d go or what I’d do… I couldn’t expect Alex to house me forever, and ultimately, our contract would end and I’d have nowhere to stay.

The excitement suddenly dampened on this thought. I hadn’t thought this completely through. I mean, I absolutely wanted to finish this out. This had been what I swore to do ever since I found out that Liam betrayed me.

Maybe I had just become accustomed to the life I had lived with Alex, but… I… I would really miss staying here.

“I thought you’d be excited about that information,” Alex said, crossing his arms. A small frown sat on his face.

“I-I am! It’s great news, now we can officially take down Liam!” I said, turning to him with the best smile I could give him.

Alex looked me over, as if he could see right through my smile.

“Grace, do you want this?” He asked, his tone suddenly serious.

I looked at him with wide eyes. What did he mean by “this”?

“I-I’m not sure-”

“Do you want to expose Liam?” He asked again, firmly. His eyes watched me intently.

“Yes, of course!” I say, almost instantly. It was true. Did it not seem like it?

“Okay. Then let’s finish this.”

“Luna Grace, these are serious accusations against your mate and co-leader, the Alpha King,” a gray-haired member of the Council said, eyeing me with suspicion. Everyone’s eyes were on me as I presented my case.

In order to divorce Liam, I had to get permission from the Council to do so, and in order for that, I had to convince them that Liam was a bad mate and not worthy to be Alpha King. But of course, I had evidence to back it up.

The media had done its work already, chipping away at Liam’s reputation and supporters, and now he had thin legs to stand on. It wouldn’t be hard to win this, but I needed some heavy-hitting points in order to succeed.

Liam had been long loved by many in the Council, and changing their minds would be harder than the public’s.

“I know, Sir, but I do not say this without evidence. I’m sure you have seen the news articles publishing Liam’s mishandling of pack finances?” I ask, looking around at the tables.

There were unpleasant murmurs and nods. This news had been a huge blow to all who supported Liam, and it was a despicable thing to do. However, most Council members had turned a blind eye and decided to give him another chance.

“I have the papers proving his financial discrepancies right here,” I say, holding up a file. More murmurs went around the room, and I handed it to the gray-haired man, who looked them over, squinting through his glasses.

I let the documents get passed around, letting the information sink in. This was the first step, and I knew that since it was already known information, it wouldn’t be enough on its own. But at least, it got the room’s feelings in the right direction.

“We know this already, Luna Grace,” the man spoke up again, peering over his glasses at me. “It is an unfortunate choice that Alpha King Liam made, but not grounds for divorce.”

I gave him a polite smile. It was despicable that I had to prove that I needed a divorce. Once I got myself on the Council, many things would change for werewolf women.

“Of course not, Sir. That is why I present you with new evidence. Liam has cheated on me and betrayed me during our marriage and kept his affair hidden from the world.”

Gasps are heard throughout the room. I kept down a smile.

“These rumors have circulated, yes, but do you have anything to prove it?” The old man continued, always looking at me with disbelief.

I courteously handed him the document with the DNA confirmation printed on it, along with Sophia’s pregnancy confirmation.

He eyed it over, and set it down, staring blankly at the papers. It seemed that the news was rather shocking to him. The man next to him picked up the papers, and pursed his lips, then passed it around the room.

The dead silence was music to my ears. The evidence spoke for itself, and I knew they couldn’t refuse me, now.

Liam would lose me as well as his title.

“That is some strong evidence,” the old man said, his voice filled with disappointment. “I am sorry to see that Liam has continued down a path like this.”

I feel my heart swell with excitement. This was it. He would confirm my divorce.

“But what of your character, Luna Grace? Did you not leave your Alpha King to conspire with his greatest enemy?” The old man questioned, and affirming murmurs moved around the room.

What?! I was shocked. Did people really buy into this?!

I was not the reason Liam cheated! Nothing I did justified his actions!

My chest filled with rage, and I felt my hands begin to tremble.

“And, you have failed to conceive for three years,” another man spoke up, and I saw nods move throughout the room.

That was it.

I felt something snap within me. I didn’t care about my Luna training anymore, this was unacceptable, and I would not be talked about that way.

I opened my mouth, but before I could say anything, another voice spoke up.

“Baseless accusations,” Alex said, his voice low and dangerous. A coldness washed over the room, and all eyes turned to him, including mine.

His eyes locked onto mine for a moment, and he gave me the smallest of smiles.

“These claims against Luna Grace have no evidence to back them, but she has provided you two very strong points with solid evidence. Will you turn your back on facts just to save face? Are you too afraid your own reputations will be tarnished for supporting such a vile individual if this gets out?”

I am floored. Alex was defending me? He had already done his part, he didn’t need to help me anymore, but… here he was.

“It will get out, one way or another. And when it does, do you want to be known as supporters of the cheating, stealing Alpha King, or opposers of such treacherous behavior?” Alex continued, his cold gaze sweeping over the room.

Many members couldn’t look at him. I could only stare at him with affection and gratitude.

A long silence fell over the room, before the old man finally spoke up. “Luna Grace, your divorce is granted.”
