Molly
Mijn hoofd voelt mistig aan terwijl ik probeer wakker te worden, alsof ik in een rokerige kamer ben, maar ik ben in mijn slaapkamer en in mijn bed, dus dit slaat nergens op. Langzaam begin ik mijn ogen te openen, maar de prikkeling wordt alleen maar erger. Wat is er in godsnaam aan de hand met mijn ogen?
Ik slaag er eindelijk in ze volledig te openen, maar mijn zicht blijft wazig terwijl een lawaai mijn oren bereikt en een vreselijke geur mijn neus raakt, allemaal tegelijk. Wat is dat in godsnaam? Ik wrijf in mijn ogen om ze te verhelderen, maar het maakt geen verschil; als er iets is, lijkt de mist erger te worden terwijl mijn keel begint te branden.
Een gedempt geluid buiten mijn deur trekt mijn aandacht weg van de mist. Ik denk dat het Tom's stem is, maar ik kan het niet zeker weten. Ik ga rechtop zitten in bed en neem een moment om rond te kijken in de kamer en dan raakt de realiteit me recht in de borst. Het is niet de mist die mijn ogen prikkelt, het is rook. Verdorie, mijn slaapkamer staat vol rook!
"Archie!" roep ik mijn man terwijl ik hem probeer te porren, maar ik mis hem volledig. Zijn naam roepen stuurt me plotseling in een hoestbui die mijn longen binnen seconden laat branden. Ik leg mijn hand over mijn mond en neus terwijl ik me naar de zijkant draai om Archie opnieuw te roepen, maar ik stop voordat ik zijn naam volledig zeg wanneer ik me realiseer dat hij er niet is, zijn kant van het bed is leeg.
"Molly!" hoor ik meer commotie buiten mijn deur, maar deze keer is de stem luider en duidelijker. Het is zeker Tom. "Molly, wakker worden!" Ik schuif snel uit bed en ga laag terwijl ik naar mijn slaapkamerdeur ga.
"Molly, kun je me horen?" Tom's stem is nog duidelijker nu. "Tom, Tom wat is er aan de hand?" roep ik terwijl ik mijn badjas van de deur trek en deze gebruik om mijn mond en neus te bedekken. Nog een pijnlijke hoest verlaat mijn mond terwijl ik duizelig word en het maakt me doodsbang.
"Molls, het huis staat in brand, je moet eruit komen schat!" Diep van binnen wist ik dat mijn huis in brand stond, maar toch wilde ik het niet denken, laat staan geloven, zelfs als mijn met rook gevulde kamer de grootste aanwijzing was, wilde ik het nog steeds niet geloven. Nog steeds niet.
Ik haal diep adem om mezelf klaar te maken voor wat voor hel er aan de andere kant van mijn deur is en verdorie, dat is een grote fout. Op het moment dat ik diep adem haal, branden mijn longen als nooit tevoren en ik bevind me midden in een hevige hoestbui. God, help me alsjeblieft!
"Molls, kom op meisje. Ik sta direct buiten je deur. Je kunt dit!" Ik probeer mijn ademhaling te kalmeren terwijl ik het grootste deel van mijn gezicht bedekt houd en pak opnieuw de deurklink vast. Op het moment dat ik hem aanraak, wil ik weer loslaten, maar dat doe ik niet; in plaats daarvan schreeuw ik door de pijn die in me opkomt en trek mijn slaapkamerdeur open voordat ik in Tom's armen val.
"Ik heb je, lieverd, je bent oké." Hij houdt me vast terwijl ik mijn hand dicht bij mijn borst houd. "Tom, waar is Archie?" Ik kijk naar hem op om te zien dat zijn hele gezicht bedekt is met rook terwijl hij een soort materiaal voor zijn eigen mond en neus houdt. "Hij is beneden, weet je nog?" Oh, dat klopt. "We moeten nu gaan, Molls!" Zijn kordate toon zorgt ervoor dat ik de tranen die mijn wangen doorweken wegveeg en naar hem knik. "Ga op de grond liggen. We gaan kruipend naar buiten, oké?"
Ik knik opnieuw in zijn richting voordat ik op mijn buik op de vloer ga liggen en achter Tom aan kruip over onze overloop. Hoe verder we gaan, hoe dikker de rook wordt, waardoor het bijna onmogelijk is om iets voor me te zien, maar op de een of andere manier slaag ik erin om mijn focus op Tom's voeten te houden. Het duurt maar een paar minuten voordat we de trap bereiken, maar het voelt als een eeuwigheid.
Eenmaal bovenaan de trap veranderen we van positie en glijden snel op onze kont naar beneden. Halverwege realiseer ik me dat de rook weer dikker en sterker wordt en ik ben er vrij zeker van dat het vuur ergens beneden is.
"Archie!" Ik schreeuw zijn naam terwijl we onderaan onze trap staan, die ook naar de voordeur leidt. Het zou nu gemakkelijk zijn om naar buiten te gaan, maar ik ga niet weg zonder mijn man en zo te zien Tom ook niet. "Archie!" Tom roept zijn naam terwijl we proberen de woonkamer binnen te komen, maar de deur geeft geen krimp.
We duwen, slaan, schoppen en beuken tegen de deur, maar hij gaat niet open. "Het voelt alsof er iets achter zit dat ons tegenhoudt." Tom's woorden weerspiegelen mijn gedachten en maken me compleet gestrest. Waarom kunnen we de deur niet openen? Waarom zou er iets achter de deur zijn?
"Wat als het vuur in die kamer is? Wat als het plafond is ingestort? Wat als Archie... oh mijn god... Archie!" Tom pakt mijn hand en trekt me naar zich toe totdat ik hem aankijk. "Molly, we moeten hier weg." Ik wil iets zeggen, maar hij stopt me net voordat ik weer een hoestbui krijg. "Ik weet dat je niet wilt en ik ook niet, maar we moeten, meisje... We moeten."
Ik zie de droefheid op Tom's gezicht en ik weet dat dit geen beslissing is die hij lichtvaardig neemt, maar toch kan ik niet zo gemakkelijk opgeven. Ik put ergens diep van binnen en gebruik elke gram kracht die ik heb om nog een keer tegen de deur te beuken. Net voordat ik de deur raak, hoor ik een geluid en Tom verschijnt naast me terwijl hij tegen de deur beukt en eindelijk, eindelijk breekt hij de deur genoeg open zodat we in de kamer kunnen kijken.
Nou, ik heb misschien gelogen toen ik zei dat we in de woonkamer konden kijken, want dat kunnen we niet. Op het moment dat Tom een gat in de deur maakt, stroomt er dikke zwarte rook uit, veel erger dan de rook die we tot nu toe hebben doorstaan, en de gedachte dat Archie in die kamer is, maakt me doodsbang, maar ik denk niet dat hij ergens anders in het huis zal zijn.
Ik weet niet hoe het met Tom zit, maar ik voel mijn hoofd duizelig worden en ik ben er vrij zeker van dat ik bijna flauwval, maar ondanks dat en het feit dat we beiden stikken in de rook die uit de woonkamer komt, beuken we nog meer tegen de deur en slagen erin om erdoorheen te breken, maar nog steeds kunnen we niets zien.
"Archie!" Ik roep zijn naam en adem meer rook in, waardoor ik hoest totdat ik bijna moet overgeven. Ik voel mezelf met de seconde zwakker worden en ik kan me niet voorstellen dat Tom het veel beter doet. We moeten Archie vinden en hier wegkomen. SNEL!
"Molls, hier!" Tom hijgt de woorden uit terwijl hij zichzelf tegen de muur ondersteunt. "Hij is hier!" Ik gebruik alles wat ik kan om me door de kamer te bewegen, maar ik voel nog steeds dat ik nauwelijks vooruit kom. Gelukkig bereik ik Tom voordat ik flauwval, maar het zicht dat me begroet is te veel en alles wat ik zie is duisternis. Complete en totale duisternis.
