Introduction

Chapter 1

“Ajude a preparar a fogueira.”

Eu e as outras meninas empilhamos madeira no centro do acampamento.

Eu estremeci.

“Layla,” a voz do meu pai fez meu coração disparar.

Ele estava na nossa porta. “Entre.”

Eu arrastei meus pés até a casa.

“Algum problema, pai?” perguntei.

No entanto, se eles decidissem me casar assim, as coisas mudariam drasticamente.

Casamento?”

“Casamento?” Mamãe entrou. “Você encontrou um companheiro?”

Eu balancei a cabeça. Bem, talvez isso não fosse sobre casamento. Ofereci-lhes um sorriso tímido.

“Ok, talvez isso não seja sobre isso. Continue.”

Eu não ia apenas me esconder.

Ele balançou a cabeça. “Não há mais nada para nós. Você deve ir agora!”

"E a pedra?

Você responde a mim agora.

Proteja a pedra.”

Qual caminho eu seguiria a partir daqui?

Minha alcateia estava no meio do nada. Um destino assustador me aguardava. Finalmente, vi asfalto sob a luz do luar.

Levantei as mãos tentando fazê-los parar.
