Chapter 1
"Partiamo tra quindici minuti," disse Dominic al telefono.
"Luogo?" gli chiese Austin.
Austin amava vantarsi delle sue origini scandinave, dato che era nato in Norvegia. Era un uomo grande, massiccio e dall'aspetto stoico. Aveva capelli biondo scuro lunghi fino alle spalle e una barba selvaggia che non tagliava mai né domava.
Dominic sapeva che, sotto quell'aspetto selvaggio, Austin era un topo di biblioteca, un intellettuale e una persona la cui lealtà non conosceva limiti. Raramente metteva in discussione le decisioni di Dominic e teneva gli altri uomini in riga.
"Club Nero," disse Dominic.
Il Club Nero era stato il primo nightclub che Dominic aveva comprato e ristrutturato. Avevano una fila intorno all'isolato ogni giorno della settimana. Il Club Nero era stato descritto nei tabloid come il club più alla moda in cui farsi vedere.
Dominic si fermò nel corridoio che conduceva allo spazio abitativo open-space e girò la testa di lato. "Gage."

"Cazzo," sussurrò Hudson sconfitto, e Dominic rise mentre tutti salivano nel SUV sovradimensionato con i finestrini antiproiettile.
Dominic guardava oltre Cooper fuori dal finestrino mentre continuavano a prendersi in giro. Probabilmente aveva bisogno di scopare anche lui; doveva rilassarsi dopo la settimana che aveva avuto. Una bottiglia sigillata di brandy apparve con due bicchieri, e Louisa guardava ovunque tranne che direttamente Dominic. Servì loro i drink e lasciò rapidamente la stanza. C'era solo un ingresso a quella stanza, mentre la parte anteriore della stanza era aperta con una ringhiera che dava sulla pista da ballo sottostante.
“Lo ucciderai?”
Dominic si girò dalla donna che stava fissando e guardò Gage. “Che razza di domanda del cazzo è questa?”
“Voglio ucciderlo,” disse Gage.
“Nessuno lo ucciderà.”
Dominic guardò di nuovo la donna seduta al bar. Lei lo stava guardando dritto negli occhi e si leccò il labbro inferiore. Quel gesto fece stringere l'inguine di Dominic prima che lei si girasse per prima, ordinando un altro drink.
Gage si girò poi e afferrò la spalla di Dominic con la sua mano. “Non ti biasimerei se lo uccidessi. Hai sempre avuto una vita molto peggiore rispetto a noi altri.”
Dominic non voleva parlare del passato, specialmente non dei ricordi di quel seminterrato. Aveva avuto abbastanza ricordi per un giorno—anzi, per tutta una vita. “Siamo famiglia, Gage. Questo non cambierà mai.”
“La nostra famiglia.” Gage annuì con la testa e strinse Dominic in un abbraccio forte. “Lei è sexy. Vai a scopare, fratello.” Gli occhi di Dominic trovarono di nuovo la donna. Gage era, semplicemente, un cazzo di talento. Non gli sfuggiva mai nulla.
Dominic sorrise a quel commento mentre Gage usciva dal tavolo privato e si dirigeva verso la pista da ballo. Tornò dieci minuti dopo con una bionda al braccio, e cinque minuti dopo, la sua sedia era girata verso il fondo della stanza.
Anche nell'oscurità delle ombre dove sedeva Gage, non si poteva non notare la sua testa che si muoveva su e giù. Hudson si unì a Dominic alla ringhiera e si appoggiò sulle braccia. “Come cazzo fa?”
“Gage sembra innocente. Il suo bel viso aiuta in questo.”
“Fino a quando non si rendono conto che è il mostro di cui avvertono le bambine,” disse Hudson con un sorriso.
“È un cazzo di selvaggio.”
Hudson scosse la testa e si girò di nuovo verso la stanza buia. Anche Dominic si girò, e guardarono il viso della donna contorcersi mentre Gage la scopava, proprio davanti a tutti. A Gage non importava davvero. Se voleva qualcosa, la prendeva, e spettava a te distogliere lo sguardo o meno.
Cooper si avvicinò a loro e si mise con la schiena rivolta verso lo spettacolo che Gage stava dando a tutti. “Lei è una che geme, e in questo momento sta pregando come una matta.”
“È ubriaca?” chiese Hudson.
“Non biascica le parole, ma potrebbe essere ubriaca dopo un giro con quello lì,” rispose Cooper.
Dominic era tornato a fissare di nuovo la donna, e la guardò mentre respingeva due uomini che provarono la loro fortuna. Sorrise quando lo beccò a guardarla di nuovo, ma Dominic non ricambiò il sorriso. Quando si girò di nuovo verso la stanza, Gage stava chiudendo la cerniera dei pantaloni, diede una pacca sulla chiappa della donna e la mandò via.
Gage prese il bicchiere di Dominic dalla sua mano e lo svuotò. “È stato un buon inizio di serata.”
