Evie

Enfin, j'y suis arrivée. Après quatre ans à être l'élève parfaite, j'ai enfin franchi cette étape. La fête de remise des diplômes fait rage tout autour de moi. Les gens dansent, chantent et applaudissent en se lâchant tous. Pas que quelqu'un ait remarqué ma présence. J'ai tendance à rester en dehors des projecteurs.

J'étais tellement excitée de recevoir cette invitation. Timothy Hayes lui-même m'avait personnellement invitée à cette fête. C'est ma première soirée à la maison. Et on disait que les soirées chez Timothy étaient réputées pour être folles et amusantes. Tout le monde à l'école se battait pour obtenir une invitation. Les garçons tiraient à pile ou face. Les filles aiguisaient leurs ongles manucurés, prêtes à se battre pour être aux côtés de Timothy.

Ça faisait sens. C'était le garçon le plus séduisant de l'école.

« Hé, Evie, j'ai juste besoin d'une dernière signature pour mon album de fin d'année », je lève lentement le menton pour rencontrer les yeux noisette du seul garçon pour lequel j'aurais tout risqué. Timothy Hayes. « Tu es ma dernière signature. »

« Je n'ai pas de stylo sur moi », dis-je maladroitement.

Il hausse les épaules. « J'en ai un dans ma chambre. Viens », il insiste, prenant ma main et me tirant vers les escaliers jusqu'à sa chambre.

Maintenant, tout a changé. Là, allongé à côté de moi, il y avait Timothy.

Mon instinct immédiat était de crier. Mais je me mords la langue et cache mon visage dans les oreillers.

Quand j'ai finalement repris le contrôle, je m'assois et regarde autour de la chambre. Mes vêtements étaient éparpillés sauvagement sur le sol. Je regarde vers le bas. J'avais dormi dans son maillot. Le numéro 9 était imprimé en gros sur le devant avec une image de notre mascotte scolaire, le bulldog.

Mais la nuit était terminée et je devais rentrer chez moi. En sortant discrètement de la chambre, avec mes vêtements en main, je me précipite vers la porte d'entrée et retourne chez moi.

Quelques jours ont passé et cette nuit était tout ce à quoi je pensais. Timothy m'avait choisie. C'était si bon d'être vue par lui. Mes yeux n'ont pas quitté ce maillot. Je devrais le rendre. Ça doit probablement beaucoup compter pour lui.

Alors je suis descendue et j'ai commencé ma petite promenade dans le quartier. Je me demandais comment il réagirait en me voyant apparaître à sa porte. J'espérais qu'il serait heureux de me voir, vu comment il était venu vers moi.

En approchant de sa maison, j'ai remarqué quelques voitures garées dans son allée. Ces voitures appartenaient à ses amis. Des rires bruyants provenaient de l'arrière de la maison. Je ne pouvais pas m'empêcher de vouloir écouter leur conversation. C'était trop tentant. Marchant sur la pointe des pieds autour du côté, je me suis approchée de la porte blanche peinte.

« Je ne peux pas croire que tu as fait ça », dit l'un en riant. « T'as du cran, mon pote. »

« Non », soupira lourdement Timothy. « Elle avait définitivement du potentiel. »

« Quand même, Evie Sinclair ? N'est-elle pas une recluse ? Tout le monde savait qu'elle ne se souciait d'aucun garçon, sauf de ses fichus bouquins. »

« Tais-toi », rit Timothy. « Ce n'était pas si mal. »

L'un d'eux fit un bruit de bouche. « Quoi que tu dises. Tu as tenu ta promesse, alors je te laisse prendre la moto. »

Il y avait un accord. Mon torse se sentait soudainement comprimé.

« À obtenir toutes les "signatures" des filles », rit un de ses amis.

« Hé », argue Timothy. « Ça a marché, non ? J'ai couché avec elle. »

Oh, mon dieu. Je me sentais mal.

Je trébuche jusqu'à la cour avant, les larmes brouillant chaque centimètre de ma vision. Je ne pouvais pas être vue ici. Je dois partir avant de m'humilier davantage. Je jette son maillot sur les marches de son porche et tente de courir, mais mes jambes fonctionnaient à peine. J'avais l'impression que mon corps avait été dépouillé de toute structure qu'il avait. Je n'étais plus qu'une flaque d'eau sur le sol attendant que la prochaine personne marche sur moi.

« Evie ? »

Je m'arrête net, rassemblant toutes les forces qu'il me restait. « Qu'est-ce que c'est ? »

« Je ne pensais pas que tu passerais... »

« Je venais juste te rendre ton maillot, » dis-je calmement, me retournant enfin pour lui faire face.

« Tu peux l'emprunter quand tu veux, » il sourit malicieusement.

Je devais me forcer à détourner le regard. Je le détestais. Il m'avait utilisée.

« Ce qui s'est passé l'autre nuit ne peut pas se reproduire, » dis-je fermement. « J'ai passé un bon moment, mais... »

« Mais ? »

Sa question flottait entre nous.

« Mais je dois me concentrer sur mes objectifs, » dis-je doucement. « Et toi, tu as ta carrière professionnelle à penser. Je pense que le mieux, c'est de laisser ça comme une chose unique. On a tous les deux obtenu ce qu'on voulait l'un de l'autre. N'est-ce pas ? »

Il fronce les sourcils. « Qu'est-ce que tu veux dire ? »

Ma mâchoire se serre, mes dents grincent les unes contre les autres. « Au revoir, Timothy, » murmurai-je d'une voix tremblante, et je m'éloignai.

Chaque pas était une torture. Chaque respiration était courte et rapide. Je souhaitais que la terre m'engloutisse sur le champ.

Le chemin du retour semblait durer des années. Ça n'aidait pas de voir la voiture de mon demi-frère garée dans l'allée. Je déglutis difficilement et entrai.

« Tu as une sale tête, » ricane-t-il dès que je pénètre dans le salon. « Ton copain t'a larguée, hein ? »

Je secoue la tête. « Ce n'était pas mon copain, » murmurai-je.

Bruce s'étouffe de rire. « Tu veux dire que tu as couché avec un inconnu et que tu as pris son maillot ? »

« Laisse tomber, Bruce, » répliquai-je avec colère, des larmes amères commençant à remplir mes yeux.

« Oh, » fait-il en mimant une moue. « Il t'a brisé le cœur. Tu l'as donné, n'est-ce pas ? »

« Bruce, » suppliai-je. « Arrête... »

« Mon Dieu, tu es tellement stupide, » rit-il. « Tous ces prix académiques et tu es encore trop bête pour reconnaître quand un mec te manipule. »

Je ne voulais pas l'entendre me dénigrer davantage. Je montai les escaliers en courant aussi vite que possible, trébuchant presque en montant. Mais il continuait de me lancer des insultes.

Il avait raison. C'était stupide de ma part de croire un mot de ce que ce garçon avait dit. Il était connu pour ses conquêtes. Ses amis aussi. Et je m'étais tellement laissé emporter par le fantasme que quelqu'un pourrait réellement m'aimer, que j'avais refusé de voir les signes.

En verrouillant la porte, je me laissai enfin aller. Je ne pouvais pas empêcher les larmes de couler sur mon visage alors que le chagrin s'installait vraiment.

Six ans plus tard

Le travail était encore chargé. C'était un mercredi soir dans le restaurant le plus branché de la ville. Les serveurs et serveuses tourbillonnaient autour des tables avec leurs plateaux de boissons et de nourriture.

J'étais épuisée après une longue journée à essayer de trouver des clients pour mon stage, mais je devais prendre ce service pour payer le reste de mon loyer du mois.

Derrière le long bar élégant, quelques télévisions étaient réglées sur des événements sportifs. Je ne faisais pas attention à qui jouait ou à quel sport c'était, jusqu'à ce qu'un homme demande à changer de chaîne.

« Mettez le match des Thunderbolt. J'ai entendu dire qu'on a une chance pour la Coupe Stanley, » dit-il fièrement.

Par pure curiosité, je levai les yeux vers l'écran alors qu'il changeait. À ce moment-là, la caméra changea et un visage que je jurais ne plus jamais vouloir revoir apparut à l'écran.

Bien sûr, c'était l'infâme Timothy Hayes. La star montante que tout le monde regarde en ce moment. Sauf moi.

La colère brûlait en moi à nouveau. Je me détestais encore d'avoir été si naïve à son sujet.
