Odessa

"Attends !" La voix gargouillante m'appelait. Une griffe déchira le haut de ma cheville ; je grimaçai à la piqûre vive mais continuai d'avancer. En ouvrant la lourde porte vers l'air libre, je me précipitai vers la lisière de la forêt, qui n'était pas loin. Cet endroit était habituellement sécurisé, rempli de gardes, mais beaucoup manquaient à l'appel. Je ne me posai pas de questions ; c'était ma seule chance.

Ses gargouillis devenaient plus clairs ; il guérissait bien trop vite. Mon espoir de m'échapper diminuait, mais je continuai à avancer car affronter les conséquences n'était pas une option.

Mes pieds brûlaient malgré le froid. Les feuilles humides collaient à mes pieds ensanglantés tandis que j'essayais de courir silencieusement à travers les bois denses. Les épines et les ronces écorchaient ma peau ; la lune était encore haute dans le ciel nocturne.

Aucun pas ne me poursuivait ; bon sang, je ne savais même pas s'ils pouvaient voler ou si c'était une vieille légende pour effrayer les enfants. Je n'étais pas sur le point de le découvrir. Mes pas frappaient des zones molles de mousse. Des lumières brillantes jaillissaient, des étincelles captant la lumière de la lune alors que je passais en trombe. Ce n'était pas le genre d'attention dont j'avais besoin. J'étais vraiment nulle à ça.

La lumière du matin apparut enfin. J'avais peut-être couru pendant des heures, mais cela me semblait des jours. Mon souffle était lourd malgré tous mes efforts pour rester silencieuse. C'était une entreprise vaine ; même si je pouvais rester silencieuse, ils me trouveraient quand même.

Leurs sens étaient accablants ; jamais de ma vie je n'avais vu une créature d'une grâce prédatrice si élevée. Malgré leurs yeux rouges sang, leurs traits étaient séduisants parmi les hommes et magnifiques parmi les femmes. Se rappeler que la beauté n'est qu'une apparence me vint à l'esprit lorsque leurs véritables intentions se révélèrent une fois que je les rencontrai.

En trébuchant pour la dixième fois, je me relevai, les mains sur les genoux, hyperventilant pendant quelques minutes. Je devais continuer, même si je ne les entendais pas derrière moi. Ils étaient faits pour chasser, créés pour combattre leur proie bec et ongles. Pour eux, je n'étais qu'une simple humaine, une source facile pour leur repas ou leurs désirs illicites. Frissonnant à cette pensée, je continuai en avant.

Je me plaignais et courais à travers l'épaisseur sauvage des arbres. On disait que j'étais unique, et cette nuit, le Duc devait obtenir ce qu'il voulait depuis les six derniers mois. Moi dans son lit, pour être revendiquée. Bien que je sois vêtue d'une belle chemise de nuit avec un collier autour du cou et traitée un peu mieux que les autres humains malheureux avec qui je partageais ma chambre, c'était juste une malédiction. Les manches courtes étaient bordées de dentelle autour de mon bras, la teinture pourpre étant la plus fine que ce mini palais pouvait offrir, j'en étais sûre. Aucun des autres humains comme moi ne portait ce genre de choses. Mes cheveux étaient bouclés à la perfection, de petites touches de mascara couvraient mes cils, toutes les autres femmes vampires soufflaient de dégoût en me laissant dans la chambre froide du Duc.

Il n'y avait pas de feu pour réchauffer la pièce, bien qu'ils sachent très bien que les humains pouvaient geler par un temps pareil. En me frottant les bras, je me souvenais du souffle froid qui remontait ma nuque quand je pensais être seule. Son nez traçait mon cou ; j'étais trop effrayée pour bouger. Le sang affluait directement à mon cou, là où ses crocs chatouillaient l'artère. Le couteau à lame dentelée qu'une fille vampire serviable m'avait glissé juste une heure auparavant était serré entre mes cuisses.

"Odessa," sa voix s'insinuait sous ma peau. Comme des ongles sur un tableau noir, sa griffe noire glissait le long de mon avant-bras. "Je suis le seul à m'être nourri de toi depuis un certain temps, et je ne pense pas que le démon en moi puisse te résister plus longtemps. Tu m'as rendu obsédé." Le Duc me tourna le dos, ne s'attendant pas à ce que je me lève de mes genoux et me jette sur son cou. J'avais été la silencieuse, la réservée et obéissante. Le Duc aimait cela, et j'en avais profité jusqu'à pouvoir l'utiliser à mon avantage.

Tirant le couteau en bois de cornouiller entre mes cuisses, je murmurai une prière de remerciement à la jeune vampire qui avait essayé de m'aider. Une main sur son front, le couteau glissa dans mon autre main moite jusqu'à ce qu'il traverse son cou. Il s'effondra au sol, et je sautai du lit pour m'enfuir.

Frissonnant au souvenir de ce monstre, je plongeai dans le ruisseau. Mon corps protestait, mais il le fallait. Il fallait laver le sang ; mon odeur, l'« attrait » dont il parlait les nuits où il se nourrissait de moi dans son salon glacial, devait disparaître. Ils pouvaient me traquer, leurs nez étaient fins, mais cela signifiait seulement que mon corps souffrirait encore plus.

Les égratignures couvraient les nombreux trous dans mon bras où ils s'étaient nourris ces six derniers mois ; mes doigts traçaient les cicatrices sur mon avant-bras. Les vampires ne buvaient pas le sang de leur « nourriture » au cou. Non, boire au cou était un moment d'intimité entre leurs amants. La nuit dernière, le Duc voulait me prendre comme amante, et qui sait ce qui serait arrivé après cela.

Plongeant ma tête dans l'eau glacée, j'en ressortis avec une nouvelle énergie, une nouvelle vie. Mes pieds étaient nettoyés du sang et je bondis hors des profondeurs glacées, filant vers le Nord. Du moins, j'espérais que c'était le Nord.

Les arbres devenaient plus clairsemés, moins denses, et moins menaçants. Ces arbres géants ne me rappelaient en rien la maison. Certains avaient une lueur qui flottait autour de leurs bases. Plus grande que celle d'une luciole, mais je n'avais pas le temps de m'en soucier car je courais pour ma vie. Courant vers la liberté.

Je courus toute la journée, sans eau ni nourriture. Mon corps voulait s'effondrer au sol d'épuisement. Les égratignures sur mon mollet devaient être infectées ; elles me démangeaient tandis que l'air froid passait. Mon adrénaline était épuisée puisqu'il n'y avait aucun signe que quelqu'un me poursuivait, mais je ne pouvais pas en être sûre. Trouvant un arbre avec des branches suffisamment basses pour que je puisse les atteindre. La belle robe de nuit violette était maintenant déchirée et trouée. Effilochée aux genoux et la dentelle salie. Chaque traction sur la branche était douloureuse jusqu'à ce que j'atteigne une hauteur sûre. En effet, c'était assez haut pour dormir juste quelques heures.

Quand je me réveillai, le soleil commençait à se coucher. Je ne pouvais plus rester immobile ; ils avaient peut-être déjà rattrapé leur retard. Je courus, boitillant pendant encore cinq heures, puis m'effondrai sur la mousse. Mon estomac et mon esprit protestaient, disant que c'était fini ; je ne pouvais plus continuer. Maintenant, me voilà debout devant de grands arbres, au milieu des montagnes. Le terrain est bien plus compliqué que la forêt sombre d'où j'étais sortie il y a quelques jours.

Un éclair de cheveux noirs, des yeux rouges, des doigts griffus traversèrent ma vision. Un battement d'ailes passa près de mes oreilles ; un cri s'échappa de mes lèvres tandis que je dévalais dans un ravin profond. Mes cheveux s'emmêlèrent dans les branches, mes doigts agrippèrent les rochers dentelés. Des ongles arrachés de mes doigts, une douleur fulgurante à la cheville traversa mon corps.
