ELENA
Si quelqu'un m'avait dit que je remettrais un jour les pieds dans cette foutue meute, je ne l'aurais pas cru. Que ne ferais-je pas pour enfin obtenir ma revanche ? Avec les fenêtres de ma voiture baissées et la musique hurlant des haut-parleurs, je descends la petite route qui y mène. Matt voulait venir avec moi, mais c'est quelque chose que je dois faire seule. Après la mort de mes parents, les choses n'ont fait qu'empirer à la Meute Lunaire, jusqu'à ce que mon oncle Arthur vienne me chercher. Sans lui et Matt, je ne sais pas où je serais. Enfin, si, je sais... probablement six pieds sous terre avec mes parents. J'y ai pensé plus d'une fois quand on a seize ans et qu'on vous dit tous les jours que le monde ne verrait pas la différence si vous n'étiez plus là, et que vous vous sentez seul et que les personnes que vous pensiez être vos amis vous tournent le dos les uns après les autres, la mort semble être la seule issue. Ils m'ont donné quelque chose que je pensais avoir perdu pour toujours : un but et une raison de vivre. Je passe le panneau de la ville et laisse échapper un soupir. Je roule sur la rue principale et rien n'a changé, les mêmes magasins, les mêmes restaurants, les mêmes cafés, je reconnais même certains visages. Cette ville ne m'a pas manqué.
J'arrive devant chez Griffin et je coupe le moteur. Il a été surpris d'avoir de mes nouvelles après tout ce temps, mais il m'a offert l'hospitalité pendant mon séjour ici. Je veux dire, il n'y a pas d'hôtel dans cette foutue ville. Pour venir ici, il faut connaître quelqu'un et rester chez cette personne. Il n'y a jamais de touristes de passage, on ne trouve pas cette ville sur une carte.
Quand je suis partie, j'ai coupé les ponts avec tout le monde, Griffin a été le seul à insister plus que les autres, mais je ne lui ai jamais répondu. À ce moment-là, je savais qu'il valait mieux pour moi de me concentrer sur mon avenir et de ne pas regarder en arrière. Mon oncle Arthur m'avait dit une fois qu'on va là où on regarde, et c'est pourquoi les pilotes de course ne regardent pas dans le rétroviseur.
Quand je sors de la voiture, je vois des yeux curieux dans la maison d'à côté. Quand je vous dis qu'il n'y a pas de touristes ici, c'est la vérité. Je frappe à sa porte et il ne lui faut que quelques secondes pour venir ouvrir. Lui aussi a changé, l'adolescent frêle a laissé place à un grand brun aux grands yeux bruns. Il a la même allure que n'importe quel loup-garou que vous rencontrerez. Je pensais être la seule à avoir changé, mais je me trompais.
Pendant un bref instant, je peux lire la confusion sur son visage, mais son expression change soudainement lorsqu'il me reconnaît enfin.
"Elena ?!" me dit-il les yeux écarquillés. "Wow, tu as changé. Tu es superbe. Enfin... tu étais déjà pas mal avant aussi... mais wow."
"Que veux-tu que je te dise ? Une puberté tardive et mon loup a fait son apparition." lui dis-je nonchalamment en haussant les épaules.
"Tout comme toi." Il s'arrête, me regardant de haut en bas à nouveau. "Entre. Ne reste pas dehors."
Il ouvre grand la porte pour me laisser passer. Il m'avait prévenu que c'était modeste chez lui, mais je pense que nous avons des définitions différentes de la modestie. Pour un jeune célibataire, sa maison est plutôt spacieuse, le grand salon doit faire environ 40 mètres carrés et il m'avait dit qu'il avait deux chambres mais une seule salle de bain.
Après m'avoir fait faire le tour, j'ai sorti mes affaires de la voiture et les ai apportées dans la chambre. Griffin est assis sur un tabouret à son comptoir de cuisine, son ordinateur portable devant lui, quand je sors de la chambre d'amis. Il le ferme en me voyant.
"Alors, que veux-tu faire ? Tu veux sortir dîner en ville ou ici, ou tu préfères te reposer ?"
"Je ne dirais pas non à un bon repas chez Martha, si elle est toujours là," répondis-je, honnêtement, c'est peut-être la seule chose qui m'a manqué dans cette ville.
"Oh oui, elle est toujours là." Il me dit en riant. "Et elle fait toujours les meilleurs milkshakes de la ville."
"Alors, on a notre programme."
Après notre dîner chez Martha, qui était ravie de me voir et a insisté pour ne pas me faire payer, Griffin m'a traîné au Spotlight, un bar de la ville.
Caleb
Merci, déesse, c'est enfin le week-end. J'ai cru que cette semaine ne finirait jamais. Finn passe sa tête par la porte de mon bureau, tenant la porte avec sa main tatouée.
"On va au Spotlight avec Theo. Tu viens avec nous ?"
"Oui, j'arrive. J'ai besoin d'un verre." Je marque une pause. "Tu as entendu parler de l'usine ? Du principal actionnaire ?"
"Theo a réussi à obtenir un nom, Matthew Callahan. On le verra à la réunion lundi après-midi."
Je tape ma main sur mon bureau avant de la passer sur mon visage. "C'est un foutu étranger qui va diriger la principale source de revenus de la meute."
"Je sais, mec." Il me répond simplement avant de s'éloigner.
Je rejoins Finn et Theo dans la voiture devant la maison de la meute. Le premier s'installe au volant et le second à l'arrière. D'habitude, il déteste s'asseoir à l'arrière parce qu'il mesure plus de deux mètres et doit se tordre pour rentrer. Je pense qu'ils ont tous les deux senti ma mauvaise humeur et ont décidé de s'assurer qu'on ne se dispute pas pour une place dans la voiture. On passe tellement de temps ensemble qu'on en vient à se connaître mieux que nous-mêmes. On a été élevés ensemble pour diriger cette meute ensemble. C'était le rêve de nos pères, ils étaient chacun Alpha de leur meute et ils voulaient créer la plus grande et la plus puissante meute des États-Unis, et ils l'ont fait.
Quand on arrive au Spotlight, le bar est déjà plein, j'indique à Finn et Theo d'aller s'asseoir pendant que je commande la première tournée au bar. Je m'appuie contre le comptoir et j'entends des rires à côté de moi, je vois Griffin avec une fille, de dos. Sa tête est tellement inclinée en arrière qu'elle rit. Griffin et Tyler, le barman, semblent complètement captivés. Je m'approche lentement, essayant d'avoir une vue plus claire de cette mystérieuse jeune femme.
"Hé, Tyler !" Je l'appelle impatiemment.
"Désolé, Alpha Caleb." Il me répond avant de se dépêcher de venir.
Cela n'a duré qu'un instant, mais j'ai vu qu'elle s'est tendue en entendant Tyler dire mon nom.
"Hé, Griffin ! Tu as une nouvelle amie ?" Je lance à Griffin, et elle se retourne.
Nom de Dieu ! Ses yeux. Je n'aurais jamais pensé revoir ses yeux bleu perçant dans ma vie.
"Elena Romano," je dis, et elle me fait un sourire en coin.
