Il nostro respiro formava nuvole nell'aria gelida dell'Alaska mentre l'intero Branco di Frostshadow si radunava attorno al gigantesco falò.

L'Alfa James stava davanti a noi. La sua figura possente era delineata contro le fiamme. Leon, suo figlio, stava alla sua destra. Era alto e fiero. Quegli occhi azzurri penetranti che sembravano scrutare dentro ognuno.

"Skye," si avvicinò l'Alfa James. "Dato che questo è il tuo primo Festival della Caccia da adulto, puoi usare questo."

Estese il braccio, offrendomi un fucile da caccia.

Sussurri si diffusero tra la folla rimanente. Questo era senza precedenti. Le armi non erano normalmente permesse al Festival della Caccia.

"Grazie, Alfa," dissi. Accettai il fucile con mani ferme nonostante l'umiliazione che bruciava nel mio petto.

"Buona fortuna," disse, ma i suoi occhi esprimevano pietà.

Mentre i lupi scomparivano nella foresta, sentivo il peso degli sguardi compassionevoli. Tutti credevano che avrei fallito. Che sarei tornata a mani vuote.

Stringevo il fucile più forte. Li avrei smentiti.

A mezzanotte mi trovavo nel profondo della foresta. Ero sola con il fucile e la mia determinazione. La luna piena illuminava la neve con un bagliore ultraterreno. Trasformava il paesaggio in un mare di argento e ombra.

Il mio respiro formava cristalli nell'aria mentre seguivo le tracce di una lepre delle nevi tra i cespugli.

Non la preda più impressionante, ma sarebbe stata qualcosa. Meglio che tornare a mani vuote.

Mi posizionai dietro un tronco caduto. Puntai il fucile mentre la lepre si fermava a rosicchiare la corteccia esposta. Il mio dito si tese sul grilletto.

Poi mi colpì. Un odore così potente da farmi girare la testa.

Pino e neve e qualcosa di selvaggio che non riuscivo a nominare. L'odore invadeva i miei sensi. Era travolgente nella sua intensità. Non avevo mai provato niente di simile prima. Il mio naso non era mai stato così sensibile.

Il mio cuore batteva forte contro le costole mentre la realizzazione si faceva strada. Questo era ciò che avevano descritto. Questo era quello che succedeva quando trovavi il tuo compagno.

Ma questo non può essere.

Senza il mio lupo, non dovrei essere in grado di percepire l'odore di un compagno. Eppure eccomi qui. Ero attirata da un filo invisibile che non potevo spiegare o resistere.

L'odore mi trascinava più in profondità nella foresta. Mi allontanava dai terreni di caccia familiari del Branco di Frostshadow.

Forse questo era un segno che il mio lupo stava finalmente arrivando.

L'odore diventava incredibilmente più forte. Mi faceva girare la testa con la sua intensità. Chiusi gli occhi, cercando di stabilizzarmi.

Quando riaprii gli occhi, tutti i pensieri su compagni e lupi svanirono in un istante.

Non trovai un compagno. Solo un mostro...


A meno di sei metri di distanza c'era un enorme orso grizzly, il suo respiro visibile nell'aria fredda della notte.

Alla luce della luna, potevo vedere le punte argentate del suo pelo marrone, le enormi zampe che potevano farmi a pezzi con un solo colpo.

Mi ero allontanata molto dall'area di caccia del branco, lontana da qualsiasi aiuto. E senza il mio lupo, ero solo una ragazza umana di fronte a uno dei predatori più pericolosi della natura.

"Oh Dio, no..."

L'orso si abbassò su tutte e quattro e fece un passo verso di me.

Mi girai e corsi via, i miei stivali scivolavano sul terreno coperto di neve. Dietro di me, sentivo il respiro ansimante dell'orso, il suono del suo corpo massiccio che si schiantava attraverso la boscaglia.

Il mio piede si impigliò in una radice esposta nascosta sotto la neve, e caddi rovinosamente.

Il fucile—il regalo dell'Alfa James che avevo quasi dimenticato—rotolò nella neve accanto a me. Mentre il ringhio dell'orso si avvicinava, le mie dita si chiusero intorno al metallo freddo dell'arma.

Rotolando sulla schiena, sollevai il fucile con mani tremanti.

Sparai.

Una volta. Due volte. Tre volte.

Gli spari echeggiarono attraverso la foresta silenziosa, ogni colpo mi scuoteva le braccia. L'orso ruggì, ma continuava ad avanzare.

Chiusi gli occhi, certa che stavo per morire.

Poi arrivò un suono che non mi aspettavo—l'urlo di dolore dell'orso, seguito da un tonfo pesante.

L'avevo davvero colpito? Avevo abbattuto un orso grizzly?

I miei occhi si aprirono di scatto. Alla luce argentata della luna, vidi non solo l'orso caduto, ma anche il lupo marrone massiccio che stava sopra di esso, i denti scoperti in un ringhio silenzioso. Il sangue intriso nel pelo intorno al muso, prova del suo attacco all'orso.

Conoscevo quel lupo.

"Leon," sussurrai.

La testa del lupo si girò verso di me, quegli occhi azzurri si fissarono nei miei.

Avrei dovuto sentirmi sollevata. Grata.

Leon mi aveva salvato la vita.

"Grazie, Leon!" gridai, avanzando nella neve verso di lui. La mia voce si spezzò dall'emozione. "Se non fossi arrivato, sarei sicuramente morta. Sarai sicuramente il campione di questo Festival di Caccia!"

Ma mentre mi avvicinavo, qualcosa nei suoi occhi di lupo azzurro ghiaccio mi fece fermare. Non c'era calore lì. Invece, il suo sguardo era freddo, quasi... distante.

Prima che potessi decifrare la sua espressione, Leon iniziò a trasformarsi. La trasformazione era fluida e aggraziata—il pelo che si ritirava nella pelle, ossa e muscoli che si riorganizzavano sotto la pallida luce della luna.

Avevo visto persone trasformarsi prima, ovviamente, ma qualcosa nel vedere Leon trasformarsi fece salire il calore alle mie guance.

Leon era alto almeno un metro e ottantotto, la sua figura imponente dominava la radura. I suoi capelli dorati, ora arruffati dalla trasformazione, catturavano la luce della luna come argento filato. I muscoli definiti del petto e dell'addome si contraevano ad ogni respiro, testimonianza di anni di allenamento e del suo sangue da Alfa.

Non c'è da meravigliarsi che Leon fosse la fantasia di quasi tutte le ragazze del branco. Anche Maya, la ragazza più popolare del nostro branco, sapeva che non era il suo compagno ma continuava a girargli intorno come una falena alla fiamma.

Guardandolo ora, forte e completamente nudo, abbassai finalmente lo sguardo per l'imbarazzo.

Ma non era solo il mio viso a bruciare; un calore strano si agitava nel mio addome inferiore, una sensazione che non avevo mai provato prima. Calore e umidità si raccoglievano tra le mie gambe.

Fu allora che il profumo mi colpì di nuovo—più forte, più inebriante di prima. Pino e neve e selvaticità, ma ora con un'altra nota. Qualcosa di metallico. Sangue.

Poteva davvero essere il mio compagno?

Mi chiedevo, il cuore che batteva forte mentre il profumo mi avvolgeva. Aspetta, c'è qualcosa di diverso. Questo odore di sangue... non è dell'orso.

Lentamente, sollevai di nuovo gli occhi verso Leon e mi congelai dall'orrore. Lì, sulla sua spalla sinistra, c'era una ferita inconfondibile—un foro di proiettile che si stava lentamente chiudendo.

Nel mio panico, avevo sparato alla cieca all'orso... e avevo colpito Leon.
