Il punto di vista di Elona
I raggi del sole pomeridiano filtravano attraverso gli alti alberi che fiancheggiavano la strada mentre camminavo lungo il sentiero familiare verso la casa di Crislynn. Crislynn è stata la mia migliore amica da quando avevamo sei anni. Condividiamo la stessa strada, e loro ci hanno accolto calorosamente quando io e mio padre ci siamo trasferiti qui. Era un quartiere lussuoso, ma le facciate scintillanti delle ville non erano nulla rispetto ai sogni che fermentavano dentro di noi. Con il cuore che mi batteva forte, mi avvicinai alla casa familiare con la sua elegante architettura e il giardino ben curato. Alzai la mano per bussare alla porta, con le farfalle nello stomaco.
La porta si aprì rivelando Crislynn, i suoi capelli ramati che cadevano in onde sulle spalle. I suoi occhi verdi brillanti avevano un accenno di malizia mentre mi sorrideva. "Elona, sei puntuale. Vieni dentro!"
Ci sistemammo in cucina. Mi sedetti sullo sgabello al bancone della cucina mentre Crislynn ci versava del succo d'uva. Siamo al nostro ultimo anno di liceo. L'anno prossimo ci aspetta un nuovo capitolo delle nostre vite. "Mio padre è andato a delle riunioni, quindi mi annoiavo," dissi mentre lei mi metteva il succo d'uva davanti. Mio padre si occupa di immobili, ma sono sempre grata per il tempo che dedica ancora a me. Abbiamo un ottimo rapporto padre/figlia che non voglio mai rompere.
"Stavo facendo delle ricerche sui college da frequentare," disse mentre rimetteva il succo in frigo e poi si girò verso di me. "È molto difficile scegliere a quale college fare domanda. Il giornalismo è il mio sogno, e non voglio lasciare mio padre qui. Mi preoccupo per lui," disse con un accenno di preoccupazione.
Mi dispiaceva per lei, anche lei era molto legata a suo padre. Quando mi sono trasferita qui, ho avuto il privilegio di conoscere sua madre, Estelle. Crislynn somigliava a sua madre, ma aveva gli occhi verdi foresta di suo padre. Sua madre è morta tre anni fa, ed è stato difficile per entrambi. Mia madre è morta quando avevo cinque anni e a questo punto non volevo nemmeno pensarci perché dovevo tirare su di morale la mia migliore amica.
"Sono sicura che vorrebbe che tu vivessi la tua vita e ti divertissi." Le sorrisi debolmente.
"Hai visto come si seppellisce nel lavoro e suggerirei che inizi a uscire di nuovo, ma dubito fortemente che lo farà," sospirò pesantemente.
"È una sua scelta dopotutto," dissi sorseggiando il mio succo. Devo ammettere che ho una piccola cotta per il signor Crane, ma non abbastanza da volerlo davvero perseguire.
"Credo che tu abbia ragione," disse.
"Ho pensato a qualcosa che potrei perseguire come possibile scelta di carriera," dissi mentre tenevo la mano sul bicchiere.
"Per favore, dimmelo!" era sempre così ansiosa di sapere.
Sorrisi nervosamente. "Beh, ho pensato molto al mio futuro ultimamente. Voglio intraprendere una carriera nella moda."
Gli occhi di Crislynn si spalancarono, un misto di sorpresa ed eccitazione. "Wow, Elona!" rimase sbalordita. "Hai l'aspetto e la sicurezza giusti, non c'è dubbio. Ma sei ancora un po' timida."
Non potei fare a meno di arrossire alle sue parole. "Grazie, Crislynn. È solo che ho fatto ricerche sulle agenzie e parlato con persone, e credo davvero di poter farcela. Non lo saprò mai se non ci provo e magari quella timidezza può sparire. Ci sto ancora pensando, ma per ora, per favore, non dirlo a nessuno finché non avrò preso una decisione e non ne avrò parlato con mio padre."
Il sorriso di Crislynn si allargò. "Prometto, non lo dirò a nessuno. Non ho dubbi che sarai fantastica, Elona. E io ti sosterrò in ogni passo del cammino."
"Questo significa molto e sai che farò lo stesso per te," sorrisi.
"Certo. Ora, devo solo far tornare mio padre nel campo degli appuntamenti," disse. Sentimmo la porta d'ingresso aprirsi e chiudersi, e sapevo chi era. Il mio cuore batteva forte nel petto per questa improvvisa sensazione di nervosismo ed eccitazione.
All'improvviso, mi irrigidii quando sentii la voce del signor Crane dietro di me, "Buon pomeriggio, ragazze," disse, e Crislynn gli sorrise sopra la mia spalla.
"Ciao, papà. Sei tornato piuttosto presto," disse. Il signor Crane apparve accanto a me mentre lo intravedevo. Il signor Crane era indubbiamente attraente, con tratti affilati e un carisma che sembrava irradiarsi senza sforzo. Era come se fosse abituato ai riflettori, anche tra le mura di casa sua.
"Come stai, Elona?" Mi guardò con quegli occhi verdi come la foresta che a volte mi perseguitano nei sogni. Mi schiarii la gola.
"Sto bene, signor Crane." Sorrisi e guardai il mio succo. Sentivo il calore che mi saliva alle guance. Non mi ero mai sentita così a questo livello prima d'ora.
"È bello saperlo," rispose, e la sua voce era molto vellutata. "Hai già cercato quale università vuoi frequentare?" chiese a Crislynn mentre andava verso il mobile e raggiungeva la parte superiore per prendere un bicchiere. Notai i suoi muscoli snelli attraverso il suo completo nero Armani a tre pezzi. Non mi aiutava nemmeno quello.
"Sì, ci sto guardando, ma abbiamo anche dei compiti. Dobbiamo scrivere un saggio. Va bene se Elona resta a cena? Suo padre è fuori per delle riunioni e stasera è venerdì. Posso ordinare una pizza per noi," disse.
Quando i miei occhi incontrarono di nuovo quelli del signor Crane, stava sorseggiando acqua dal suo bicchiere mentre mi guardava intensamente fino a quando smise di bere. "Per me va bene, nel frattempo, ho del lavoro da recuperare nello studio," disse mentre si girava e metteva il bicchiere vuoto nel lavandino e si allontanava.
Il mio cuore batteva forte, e per la prima volta, lo vidi veramente, non solo come il padre di Crislynn, ma come un uomo. E quando i suoi occhi incontrarono i miei per un attimo fugace, realizzai con un sussulto che la mia piccola cotta per lui era molto più di una semplice cotta.
