Chapter 46
Lucas’s POV
“Alpha, we need you to leave,” Doctor John says, and I growl. He was the one harassing Harper when she first got here.
“Work around me,” I growl at the doctors now surrounding Harper. Jenna touches my arm softly, but I don’t look away from Harper. He’s too pale and covered in blood, even after they’ve cleaned her up.
“Alpha,” Jenna whispers. “I’m about to clean her back, so…”
“John get out.”
The man gapes at me, but after a minute of hesitancy, he drops what he’s doing and leaves. Once he’s gone, Jenna moves around to the other side of the bed and glances at me. I nod, holding Harper’s hand as Jenna cuts Harper’s shredded shirt away.
Claw marks start at her shoulder and rake all the way down to her side, forming jagged bloody gashes that make my chest ache.
“This is unusual,” Jenna murmurs, touching the marks softly. “The bleeding has stopped, and she seems to be healing already.”
“She’s healing herself?”
Jenna nods and a bit of relief touches me, however it disappears as soon as I look at Harper again.
“Is there anything to tell who did this?” I ask, squeezing her hand. Whoever did this was deliberate. Claw marks, fractured ribs, dislocated shoulder, and bruises. They beat Harper before locking her in her room.
“No, I don’t have a way to know,” Jenna asks as she begins to clean the wounds. I hold the bloody gauze when she needs to get more and watch as she spreads a clear medicine along Harper’s back. “But if she’s already healing even while she’s unconscious, then she’ll be able to heal herself when she wakes. In the meantime, I will keep her comfortable and apply more numbing cream if it’s needed.”
I glance at the medicine she’d just put on Harper’s wounds and nod.
The idea of Harper healing herself subconsciously is amazing. I knew she could heal, but I didn’t realize her healing ability worked without conscious decision. However, I have felt better each time she’s near, so maybe she does have a healing aura.
Gently, I squeeze Harper’s hand again.
“Are you going to find out who hurt her? Do you think they’ll come back?”
“They better not come near her again,” I growl, imaging another attack.
“She’s the best healer we’ve had in a long time,” Jenna says. I nod.
Her magic is amazing, even if it wanes every now and then. I’ve noticed how she grows tired while healing more than a few people, but I’ve also noticed how she pushes herself too far. She cares for her patients more than she cares for her own health, which often leads to her slinking off to her office to pass out.
“I already have Mason looking into the attack, but there was no scent in the room other than Harper’s scent.”
Jenna looks up from washing her hands, her eyebrows pulling together in confusion, “No scent at all?”
“They used some sort of scent blocker, which makes this a deliberate attack,” I tell her. No one uses scent blockers or scent suppressants unless they don’t want to be found.
Jenna sighs and shakes her head, “I can’t believe someone—”
“Harper?!” Logan comes flying into the room, bumping into Jenna’s cart in his hurry to get to Harper’s side.
The sight of him instantly sours my mood, especially when he begins fawning over Harper. He calls her name again, touching her shoulder then her face before looking at me.
“Thank you, Alpha, for helping my mate, but I can take it from here,” Logan says. He moves to my side and takes Harper’s hand out of mine. I nearly snap at him, but he continues talking, “I’m sure you have more important things to take care of.”
“Of course,” I grit, standing.
Logan immediately takes my seat, asking Jenna a myriad of questions, and anger rages inside me. Though, I know I have no reason to be so angry because Harper isn’t my mate. I have to force myself to leave the room before I take my fists to Logan’s face.
Her mate is here to take care of her, so I shouldn’t have any objections. However, as I watch him through the window, I find myself clenching my fists. He’s not the one who found her. I am.
In fact, Logan didn’t know she was hurt until I sent someone to tell him. Maybe I shouldn’t have sent anyone to tell him. Then, I could stay with her.
“Alpha, you’re needed on the training grounds. There’s been a fight,” Brandon says through the mind link.
Sighing, I turn to Jenna who followed me out of the room to give Logan and Harper some time, “Take care of her.”
“I will, Alpha.”
Logan’s POV
Alpha Lucas was jealous. He was angry that I came in and took his seat at Harper’s side. I could read it all over his face and body language. The tense shoulders, locked jaw, and clenched fists. It all screamed that he isn’t happy I’m here.
I glance at the window, spotting him outside as Jenna steps out of the room. Lucas has been standing there for twenty minutes while Jenna explained what happened.
Thankfully, Harper is alright, and luckily, Alpha Lucas was there to find her. If he hadn’t been, she might have been locked up all night until I went to get her for training. And now, as I watch Lucas turns and walks away, I know my plan can work.
Until Harper came along, I had no way to keep Sierra and Lucas from mating. If I can goad and trick Lucas into taking Harper as his mate, Sierra will be mine again. She’ll have no reason to stay with Lucas once he leaves her for Harper.
I just didn’t count on Lucas having a will of steel and I didn’t count on him feeling any kind of bond with Sierra.
Each time he seems to be falling more for Harper, something snaps, and he turns back to Sierra. It’s almost like he’s possessed, but no matter what I do, I can’t figure out what’s going on. I think Sierra is doing something, but I haven’t figured out what.
It’s been driving me crazy because I’m doing my best to flirt and come onto Harper when Lucas is around.
This time, it was pure luck that he found her injured.
“Logan?” Harper’s raspy voice croaks.
“Right here,” I say, squeezing her hand again. Her eyes flutter open, and she groans softly as she tries to look around. “You’re in a medical room.”
Her eyes fall on me, her brows pulling downward, “How did I get here?”
“You were attacked and…” A lightbulb flickers to life in my mind a I have an idea on how to make Lucas even more jealous. “I found you and brought you to Jenna to be treated. You were beaten pretty badly and took a knock to your head.”
I brush my fingers softly over the knot on Harper’s forehead, which makes her wince.
“What happened? Do you remember?”
She blinks and stares at me for a moment before shaking her head, “It’s all a blur. I don’t…” She winces again, “I don’t remember.”
“It’s okay. Just rest, and we can figure it out later.”
A knock sounds at the door, and Jenna pops her head in, “Alpha Lucas is here to see Harper.”
“I don’t want to see anyone, especially him,” Harper mutters, closing her eyes. Jenna glances at me then at Harper, before slipping back out of the room.
I smirk.
If Lucas is here again, he’s worried. Knowing I’m in here and that he can’t see Harper will be a good catalyst for jealousy, and I silently thank Harper for denying his entrance.
Things may just work in my favor after all.
