Chapter 28

Harper’s POV

Hiding from an Alpha while pretending like you’re not hiding is draining.

Doing it for three days is irritating.

What’s more aggravating is that Lucas seems to not be affected by what happened after the ball. He’s walking around, going through his regular daily routines, looking like he doesn’t have a care in the world.

Does he not remember what happened? Sometimes going through heat can affect your memory if it’s bad enough, but I’m not sure. I can’t read him like I can read some other people.

Leaning back against the warm brick, I look up at the sky and watch the clouds roll by. One, two, three…

“Alpha!”

My heart jumps, and I look around, noticing Lucas walking out of the trees. One of the warriors waves him down, and before either of them can see me, I duck between the buildings that separate the second medical wing and the main pack house.

“Patrols are going smoothly today,” the warrior says, and I thank the Goddess. I don’t know if I have it in me to heal a group like I did the other day because after three days, I still feel a bit weak.

“Good. Have Beta Mason contact me if anything comes up. I have a meeting with Alpha Renard,” Lucas says while running a hand through his hair. I clench my fist, remembering how soft his hair was and…

I shake the trail of thoughts away.

Forget that night, Harper. It was a mistake, and neither of us were thinking straight.

As they talk, I slip away, scooting down the little path between the buildings and going around the back. I still have work to do, and even if I didn’t, I wouldn’t want to hang around to be caught eavesdropping.

There’s nothing worse than gaining someone’s trust only to have it ruined soon after… even though I’m really not sure where Lucas and I stand right now. I don’t really want to find out if we’re in a negative spot, hence the avoidance.

With no patient to take care of, I head to my office and continue working on paperwork.

“Healer Harper?”

A knock sounds on my door and a moment later, one of the female nurses pops her head into the room and waves.

“Is something wrong?” I ask, confused by her presence. Most of the nurses are arrogant men, and so are the doctors. Lacy is one of the few females who works in the medical wing, which I find ironic since men aren’t usually healers.

“There’s a man in room two who needs you to heal a double break,” she tells me with a thin smile.

“Was there another attack?” I ask, scanning the room outside my window. No one is rushing around like the other day; in fact, it’s quiet and calm. Just the way it should be.

Lacy shakes her head with a giggle, “No, he said it was a training injury.”

Training. Right.

Logan mentioned something about training yesterday, but he didn’t go into detail. We haven’t had much time to hang out since we met, since he’s been busy with his new warrior duties. He told me that the switch from being behind a desk to constant training and patrolling is more grueling than he thought it would be.

“I’ll take care of it,” I tell Lacy before turning and making my way to room two.

The man sitting on the patient bed is unfamiliar and larger than any man I’ve ever seen… and he’s accompanied by Lucas who is sitting in the corner.

“Hey, Doc,” the man says, his voice deep and rough. It contrasts starkly with the smile on his face and the arm that has a bone sticking through it. “I hear you have the magic touch.”

“Renard,” Lucas growls in warning. The man only smiles and lifts his arm. I’m not sure how he’s moving, but I’m impressed at his lack of reaction to the massive injury. “Alpha Renard got hurt during training and needs a healer. Can you help?”

Lucas’s full attention is on me, and I have to take a deep breath. This man got injured in a fight? He looks like a giant who could be made from concrete. I move to his side, examining the injury.

“I’ll have to reset the bone or push it back in before I can do anything… Did you do this?” I ask, turning to Lucas.

Alpha Renard laughs and slaps Lucas on the back with his non-injured hand, “No, I hurt myself, so don’t blame your Alpha, and you can do whatever you need to fix it.”

I’m not sure whether or not to believe the man, but I don’t argue. I hold his arm between my palms and tell him to brace himself. Again, the man doesn’t react, merely nods, and watches as I shove his bone back in place. He winces slightly, and I almost wonder if he can’t feel pain.

Lucas just shakes his head, like this is an everyday thing, and leans back against the wall. His eyes never leave me, and even when I look away, I can feel him watching me.

“Give me a moment to jumpstart the healing,” I mutter, pressing my magic into the man’s bones. He grunts but otherwise stays quiet. I’ve never seen anything like it.

“He doesn’t feel much pain,” Lucas says. “That’s why he’s not reacting.”

I freeze.

There’s no way he could know what I was thinking. I don’t respond. Instead, I make sure the unfamiliar Alpha is healed before excusing myself.

“Healer Harper, meet me in my office in fifteen minutes. I have something to discuss with you,” Lucas calls out. I spin around, my heart jumping in her chest again.

“I’m sorry, Alpha,” I mutter quickly. “I’m busy working paperwork to close the clinic I ran in the human quarters.”

Not giving him time to protest, I practically run away with the sound of Alpha Renard’s laughter following after me.

Lucas’s POV

Harper has avoided me for days and completely ignored me yesterday while healing Alpha Renard. Then, she blew me off when I asked to meet with her. If those instances weren’t enough to split my brain and let the jealousy spill out, her agreeing to go on a date with Logan right when I tried to talk to her in the dining hall was the nail in the coffin.

Is that why I’m following Harper and Logan through the mall?

Maybe.

Do I want to snatch her away every time he touches her?

Fuck yes.

Does Harper look like she wants to be here?

Absolutely not.

She laughs at something Logan says, but her smile doesn’t reach her eyes. There’s a dull, bored look in her eyes that lets me know she’s trying to enjoy herself. She wants to enjoy herself, but when she glances at her watch, I know she’s not having fun.

Logan is pointing at products in windows. The longer this goes on, the more I want to sweep in and save Harper from this disaster of a date. I don’t know Harper very well, but she doesn’t seem like the type to enjoy a shopping trip as a date, especially the first date.

Honestly, it sounds like more of a date that Sierra would enjoy. The shopping, having someone spend money on her, designer brands… it’s all wrong. Harper is more down to earth than that, meaning she’d probably enjoy a date that’s more personal touch.

Had Logan even put effort into this date? It doesn’t seem like it.

If he’s going to take her out, he should get to know her better. Everyone knows that which just shows how Logan clearly doesn’t appreciate Harper’s opinion or thoughts.

It shows that he doesn’t deserve to be on a date with my healer.
