Chapter 102
Lucas’s POV
Knowing your mate is in the next room while you try to sleep is torture. When I poked my head into the room before coming to my office, she was sleeping soundly in my bed while surrounded by still wolves.
My wolf didn’t like the idea of leaving her with other males, especially since the one from last night was sleeping at the foot of the bed. I made it clear to the wolf that Harper was mine, but he still lifted his head when I looked into the room.
Was the little beast laughing at me?
It’s ridiculous to be jealous of a wolf, particularly one who can’t shift, but I am. My wolf wanted to drag him off the bed, but I held him back. That wolf has no claim or power over our mate, so I sent him a scalding glare that had him sliding off the bed and to the floor.
Sighing, I let my head fall back against my office chair.
More than anything, I wanted to join her in bed, but I couldn’t. I have things I need to take care of. The main one being to figure out how to reunify Harper and her wolf. On the entire journey back to the pack last night, her wolf stayed at her side.
The idea of her having a constant guard is appealing, but Harper’s wolf isn’t just a guard. She’s part of Harper’s soul, and it wouldn’t be fair for them to stay separated. While I have the power to take a wolf soul out of someone, I don’t have the power to grant a wolf soul.
That will take more magic power than I have.
Tapping into the pack link, I let the bond between me and Harper guide me to her mind. I try to mind link with her, but something prevents the message from getting through. I try two more times, still hitting that invisible force around her mind, so I pull out my phone.
It rings through to voicemail once, but when I call again, she answers. Her voice is scratchy, letting me know she’s probably just woken up as she says, “Hello?”
“Harper, come to my office. There’s something we need to discuss.”
“Wh… Okay. I’ll be there in a minute,” she mutters before hanging up.
Not long after she ends the call, Harper arrives. Though, she’s not the only one to arrive. As Harper enters my office, each of the wolves we rescued follows her in. Harper’s wolf stays close to her side while the other wolves fan out and find places on the floor to lay. They take up the space like they’ve been here a million times, comfortably lounging.
It’s an odd sight, but at the same time, it’s nice. Even after everything they’ve been through, these wolf souls are comfortable enough to let their guard down around humans. Although, I wonder if it’s because we’re werewolves, or because we’re the ones who rescued them.
Would they act this docile with the other members of my pack?
“Did you call me here to stare at the wolves?”
Harper’s sarcastic comment snaps me out of my thoughts, and I look at her. Her hair is mussed from sleep, making her look somewhat adorable as she rubs at her eyes.
“No, I called you here to talk about you and your wolf,” I tell her, noting how her wolf lifts her head at the mention of her. “Could we maybe come up with a name for her?”
“You want to name my wolf?” Harper asks.
I nod. “I don’t want to keep calling her “her.’”
Harper nods again then looks down at the brown wolf. The wolf in question stands then puts her paws on my desk to become part of the conversation.
“Does your wolf have a name?” Harper asks, and I pause. “My wolf never spoke, so I didn’t get to ask her.”
“Not really. I’ve never named him before or asked if he had a name. He’s just… my wolf. He also was never a separate entity to me before,” I add.
Is that normal? We’d never really felt separate enough to clarify something like that.
“Levi. My name is Levi, human.”
“Levi,” I repeat for my wolf. “He said his name is Levi.”
The spark of interest in Harper’s eyes makes me feel guilty for not asking my wolf if he had a name. Her green eyes pierce me, and I swear I hear my wolf… Levi chuckle.
“Hi, Levi,” she whispers, leaning closer like she’s trying to see inside me. Her fingers tap a little rhythm on the edge of my desk. The sound is soft, but it draws my focus just like everything else she does.
My wolf preens at the attention before turning his attention to Harper’s wolf. I can feel his energy expanding, and I watch as the she-wolf chuffs at me.
“Her name is Erie,” I announce, and Harper’s eyes widen. Erie hops down, turns, and rubs her head along Harper’s side like she’s been doing since we found her. Their connection, even though they’re physically separated, is amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it.
“How do you know?”
“She told my wolf.”
“She spoke?” Tears fill Harper’s eyes, and I jump up.
I move to her side but hesitate to touch her. Does she want me to comfort her? We were closer last night than we had been in a while, but yesterday wasn’t normal. The adrenaline and emotions were running high.
“That’s what Levi says,” I tell her softly and kneel at her side. I lay one hand on Erie’s back and the other on Harper’s arm.
“Oh, Erie,” Harper blubbers, tears rolling down her face. She pulls the she-wolf into a hug and kisses her head.
“Actually, I didn’t call you here to name Erie. I called you here to let you know that I want to find a witch to reunite Erie with your soul.”
“Is that possible?” Harper sniffles. She peers at me with her swollen, teary eyes, and I resist the urge to pull her to me.
“I can’t perform the reunification, but our pack has worked with witches before. I believe one of them can help us,” I tell her.
Harper stares at me, probably processing the information. I wish I could read her thoughts. It would be a tremendous help in knowing what to say or what not to say in moments like this. However, until she is reunited with her wolf, we won’t be able to form the pack link.
Forming and completing our mate bond would also connect our minds, but I know she’s not ready for that yet.
For now, though, I need to focus on gaining Harper’s full trust. There’s so much I need to make up for, and one way to bring her back to me is to spend time alone with her. Time where the pack and the elders can’t interrupt or bother the two of us.
“I don’t know how long it will take,” I say, taking her hand in mine. “But I’ll make sure to find someone who can re-bond your wolf to you.”
“Thank you, Lucas,” Harper murmurs, her pretty green eyes finding mine. I want to kiss her again, like last night, but I can’t.
I won’t.
Not until she’s ready.
