Awakening

The forest thinned as we approached the valley, and a sense of unease settled over me like a weight. The mountains stretched around us, jagged and silent, their peaks lost in mist. Even the snow beneath our boots seemed heavier here, almost purposeful, as though the earth itself was warning us.
