Chapter 6 Curiosity Piqued
Abel Stone.
My feet lead me to the tall windows from where I watch her leave.
“Evelyn,” I test the name, letting it roll off my tongue.
There is something peculiar about her.
The moment our eyes met, my wolf sprang to alert immediately, and I could barely contain it under the surface.
It was like a dormant feeling coming to life all of a sudden.
Yet, something is missing.
The one word that should have followed never did, the missing link.
Why?
My eyes catch some movements below, pulling me out of my thoughts.
As soon as Evelyn steps out of the doors, a man steps out of a black sedan and strides over to her.
There would be nothing strange about the sight if I didn't catch the slight shift in her body language.
Her shoulders tensed and her back stiffened, yet she still looked somehow smaller than before.
The man is talking, and it appears like a normal conversation, but something is off.
The way her hands wring together behind her, eyes never meeting his.
I know better than anyone that things are never as they appear to be.
This interaction there's something that doesn't sit right with me.
I assess the man's features for some sort of familiarity.
Who is he? And why does he make her so tense?
My eyes track them as he grabs her hand and leads her to the passenger side of the same car, shutting the door as soon as she disappears in the car.
At that moment, he glances straight up in my direction, his eyes cutting across to mine in an unreadable gaze.
It is only for a brief second, then his gaze strays again as if he had not seen me at all.
He rounds over to the driver's seat of the car and gets in before taking off.
I leaf over the familiar faces in my mind, finding none that seem like him.
I need to know who that man is and what his relation is to Evelyn.
With that thought in mind, I stride over to my desk, pressing on the intercom button.
The static buzzes for a second before it connects.
“Sarah, I want you in my office immediately,” then I release the button again, my hands moving to grab Evelyn's file.
I scan through it looking for any personal details about her, but I find nothing else that I had not already seen before.
It takes a few more minutes than I would have preferred for Sarah to finally arrive, not that I can fault her for that.
I know how much of the workload is already on her; in addition to my immediate roles, it would be too much for one person, no matter how efficient.
That's the reason why I need an assistant as soon as possible, and I can tell that Evelyn will be perfect for the role.
If she is as efficient as her qualifications state, then she will be perfect for the role.
“Mr Stone,” Sarah stops in front of my desk with an expectant gaze, showing that she had been in the middle of something when I summoned her.
“Ms Hellboud's file doesn't give any personal information about her,”
“Yes, it's the standard procedure,” she replies simply.
Of course, I know that it's the standard procedure, but now I want more than the standard.
I already know how my next words will sound out of the ordinary to her, but I don't give it much thought, biting the bullet.
“Forget the procedure, I want every information you can get on her, whether impersonal or not, every single detail,”
Sarah's eyes snap up to meet mine with surprise clearly shining through, but of course, she knows better than to voice out her sentiments about this.
“Yes, sir, I'll get back to you as soon as I can,”
I shake my head in disagreement with her words, remembering the way that Evelyn had reacted to that man.
I don't want to wait for more than I have to find out what is going on there.
Infact, if I could get that report before the end of the day it would be much to my satisfaction.
Although I know that it is a bit far-fetched, and she might not be able to achieve that much, so I settle for something that could work well.
“I want it on my desk before she arrives on Monday,” I instruct firmly, not missing the quick look that she shoots me.
Before she can say anything else, I dismiss her, “You can leave.”
After she leaves, I turn my attention to the files on my desk to get some work done, but the only thing that consumes my mind is thoughts of Evelyn, making it difficult to focus on anything else.
Unable to do anything else, I decide to do some personal research of my own, particularly about that strange man.
The way he was dressed and carried himself clearly showed that he must be somebody with at least a hint of importance, so I start from there.
A quick search on the successful businesses in the city and I find him—right there in the top five. Kane Hellboud of Hellboud and Co.
It's not a new business; rather, it's one that has been passed down through centuries, so I can obviously tell that he comes from old money.
So he's building on generational wealth, huh.
Then something about that name catches my attention again.
“Hellboud...” I grab Evelyn's file again, and it clicks instantly. “Evelyn Hellboud,”
Their relation then is clear as day.
They cannot be siblings since Evelyn mentioned something about a difficult background, and the air she gives off is one of strength built from real-life struggles.
Husband? Why would the wife of such a wealthy man be interviewing for an assistant position at a rival company, at that?
Something is definitely not right here.
I know for sure that my wolf is trying to tell me something.
I felt it the moment our eyes connected.
Meeting her at this time cannot be a coincidence, I know that for sure.
Whatever my wolf is trying to tell me, I'll figure it out.
