Skye's Perspektive

„Das Jagdfest ist unsere heiligste Tradition. Heute Nacht feiern wir unsere Stärke, unsere Schnelligkeit, unser wahres Wesen als Wölfe“, begann Alpha James. Seine Stimme trug sich über die Lichtung. „Heute Nacht jagen wir wie unsere Vorfahren. Wir beweisen uns als würdig unseres Erbes.“

Unser Atem bildete Wolken in der eisigen Luft Alaskas, während sich das gesamte Frostshadow-Rudel um das riesige Lagerfeuer versammelte.

Alpha James stand vor uns. Seine mächtige Gestalt zeichnete sich gegen die Flammen ab. Leon, sein Sohn, stand zu seiner Rechten. Er war groß und stolz. Diese durchdringenden blauen Augen, die schienen, jeden zu durchschauen.

Nun begannen sich die Rudelmitglieder um mich herum zu verwandeln. Menschliche Formen schmolzen zu mächtigen Wolfsgestalten. Einige waren riesig, wie Leons dunkelbrauner Wolf. Andere waren kleiner, aber nicht weniger einschüchternd.

Bald gab es auf der Lichtung nur noch drei Gruppen. Die Ältesten, die sich entschieden hatten, nicht zu jagen. Die Kinder, die zu jung waren, um teilzunehmen. Und mich. Den Erwachsenen ohne Wolf.

„Skye“, Alpha James trat näher. „Da dies dein erstes Jagdfest als Erwachsener ist, darfst du das hier benutzen.“

Er streckte seinen Arm aus und bot mir ein Jagdgewehr an.

Flüstern ging durch die verbleibende Menge. Das war beispiellos. Waffen waren beim Jagdfest normalerweise nicht erlaubt.

„Danke, Alpha“, sagte ich. Ich nahm das Gewehr mit ruhigen Händen entgegen, obwohl die Demütigung in meiner Brust brannte.

„Viel Glück“, sagte er, aber seine Augen zeigten Mitleid.

Als die Wölfe im Wald verschwanden, spürte ich das Gewicht der mitfühlenden Blicke. Alle glaubten, ich würde scheitern. Dass ich mit leeren Händen zurückkehren würde.

Ich griff das Gewehr fester. Ich werde ihnen das Gegenteil beweisen.

Mitternacht fand mich tief im Wald. Ich war allein mit dem Gewehr und meiner Entschlossenheit. Der Vollmond beleuchtete den Schnee mit einem übernatürlichen Glanz. Er verwandelte die Landschaft in ein Meer aus Silber und Schatten.

Mein Atem bildete Kristalle in der Luft, während ich einen Schneeschuhhasen durch das Unterholz verfolgte.

Nicht die beeindruckendste Beute, aber es wäre etwas. Besser als mit leeren Händen zurückzukehren.

Ich positionierte mich hinter einem umgestürzten Baumstamm. Ich zielte durch den Lauf, als der Hase anhielt, um an freigelegter Rinde zu knabbern. Mein Finger spannte sich am Abzug.

Dann traf es mich. Ein Duft, so stark, dass er mich schwindelig machte.

Kiefer und Schnee und etwas Wildes, das ich nicht benennen konnte. Der Geruch drang in meine Sinne ein. Er war überwältigend in seiner Intensität. Ich hatte so etwas noch nie zuvor erlebt. Meine Nase war nie so empfindlich gewesen.

Mein Herz schlug gegen meine Rippen, als die Erkenntnis dämmerte. Das war es, was sie beschrieben hatten. Das passierte, wenn man seinen Gefährten fand.

Aber das kann nicht passieren.

Ohne meinen Wolf sollte ich den Duft eines Gefährten nicht wahrnehmen können. Und doch war ich hier. Ich war von einem unsichtbaren Faden gezogen, den ich nicht erklären oder widerstehen konnte.

Der Duft zog mich tiefer in den Wald. Er führte mich weg von den vertrauten Jagdgründen des Frostshadow-Rudels.

Vielleicht war dies ein Zeichen, dass mein Wolf endlich kam.

Der Duft wurde unmöglich stärker. Er machte mich schwindelig mit seiner Intensität. Ich schloss die Augen und versuchte, mich zu beruhigen.

Als ich meine Augen wieder öffnete, verschwanden alle Gedanken an Gefährten und Wölfe im selben Moment.

Ich fand keinen Gefährten. Nur ein Monster...


Nicht zwanzig Fuß entfernt stand ein riesiger Grizzlybär, sein Atem sichtbar in der kalten Nachtluft.

Im Mondlicht konnte ich die silbernen Spitzen seines braunen Fells sehen, die riesigen Pfoten, die mich mit einem einzigen Schlag auseinanderreißen könnten.

Ich war weit vom Jagdgebiet des Rudels entfernt, weit von jeglicher Hilfe. Und ohne meinen Wolf war ich nur ein menschliches Mädchen, das einem der gefährlichsten Raubtiere der Natur gegenüberstand.

„Oh Gott, nein...“

Der Bär fiel auf alle Viere und machte einen Schritt auf mich zu.

Ich drehte mich um und rannte los, meine Stiefel rutschten auf dem schneebedeckten Boden. Hinter mir hörte ich das keuchende Atmen des Bären, das Geräusch seines massiven Körpers, der durch das Unterholz brach.

Mein Fuß verfing sich an einer unter dem Schnee verborgenen Wurzel, und ich stürzte hart zu Boden.

Das Gewehr – das Geschenk von Alpha James, das ich fast vergessen hatte – fiel neben mir in den Schnee. Als das Knurren des Bären näher kam, schlossen sich meine Finger um das kalte Metall der Waffe.

Ich rollte mich auf den Rücken und hob das Gewehr mit zitternden Händen.

Ich schoss.

Einmal. Zweimal. Dreimal.

Die Schüsse hallten durch den stillen Wald, jeder Schuss rüttelte durch meine Arme. Der Bär brüllte, kam aber weiter auf mich zu.

Ich schloss die Augen, sicher, dass ich gleich sterben würde.

Dann hörte ich ein Geräusch, das ich nicht erwartet hatte – das schmerzerfüllte Brüllen des Bären, gefolgt von einem schweren Aufprall.

Hatte ich ihn wirklich getroffen? Hatte ich einen Grizzlybären zu Fall gebracht?

Meine Augen rissen auf. Im silbernen Mondlicht sah ich nicht nur den gefallenen Bären, sondern auch den massiven braunen Wolf, der über ihm stand, die Zähne in einem stummen Knurren gebleckt. Blut verklebte das Fell um seine Schnauze, ein Beweis für seinen Angriff auf den Bären.

Ich kannte diesen Wolf.

„Leon“, flüsterte ich.

Der Kopf des Wolfs drehte sich zu mir, seine blauen Augen trafen meine.

Ich hätte mich erleichtert fühlen sollen. Dankbar.

Leon hatte mein Leben gerettet.

„Danke, Leon!“ rief ich und kämpfte mich durch den Schnee auf ihn zu. Meine Stimme brach vor Emotionen. „Wenn du nicht aufgetaucht wärst, wäre ich sicher tot gewesen. Du wirst definitiv der Champion dieses Jagdfestes sein!“

Aber als ich näher kam, ließ mich etwas in seinen eisblauen Wolfsaugen innehalten. Da war keine Wärme. Stattdessen war sein Blick kalt, fast... distanziert.

Bevor ich seinen Ausdruck deuten konnte, begann Leon sich zu verwandeln. Die Verwandlung war fließend und anmutig – Fell zog sich in die Haut zurück, Knochen und Muskeln ordneten sich unter dem blassen Mondlicht neu.

Natürlich hatte ich schon Leute sich verwandeln sehen, aber etwas daran, Leon bei der Verwandlung zuzusehen, ließ Hitze in meine Wangen steigen.

Leon war mindestens eins neunzig groß, sein hochgewachsener Körper dominierte die Lichtung. Sein goldenes Haar, nun zerzaust von der Verwandlung, fing das Mondlicht wie gesponnenes Silber ein. Die definierten Muskeln seiner Brust und seines Bauches bewegten sich bei jedem Atemzug, ein Zeugnis jahrelangen Trainings und seiner Alpha-Abstammung.

Kein Wunder, dass Leon die Fantasie fast jedes Mädchens im Rudel war. Sogar Maya, das beliebteste Mädchen in unserem Rudel, wusste, dass er nicht ihr Gefährte war, schwirrte aber trotzdem wie eine Motte um ihn herum.

Als ich ihn jetzt ansah, stark und völlig nackt, senkte ich schließlich beschämt meinen Blick.

Aber es war nicht nur mein Gesicht, das brannte; eine seltsame Hitze regte sich in meinem Unterleib, ein Gefühl, das ich noch nie zuvor gespürt hatte. Wärme und Feuchtigkeit sammelten sich zwischen meinen Beinen.

Da traf mich der Geruch wieder – stärker, berauschender als zuvor. Kiefer, Schnee und Wildnis, aber jetzt mit einer anderen Note. Etwas Metallisches. Blut.

Konnte er wirklich mein Gefährte sein?

fragte ich mich, während mein Herz raste und der Duft mich einhüllte. Moment, etwas ist anders. Dieser Blutgeruch... er stammt nicht vom Bären.

Langsam hob ich meinen Blick zurück zu Leon und erstarrte vor Entsetzen. Da, an seiner linken Schulter, war eine unverkennbare Wunde – ein Einschussloch, das sich langsam schloss.

In meiner Panik hatte ich wild auf den Bären geschossen... und Leon getroffen.
