Chapter 95

James and I had rushed back to the hospital as fast as when we first heard about the incident. By the time we reached the main desk, I was wheezing and out of breath.

“Mia, for the love of God, please calm down,” James huffed.

Honestly, had I not been pregnant, I would have gotten there faster...Nonetheless, I waited for my breathing to settle before speaking to the receptionist.

“Mia Derek, I’m here because I was notified that my brother has come out of his coma,” I said.

The receptionist paged Dr. Fairmont to meet us.

I couldn’t believe it. All this time, I’d felt like I’d been living in limbo—not having a single idea what was going to happen. All that time I’d been too afraid to hope, knowing I would be left with nothing but ongoing disappointment.

My nerves were frayed and tattered to the point of shaking. I wished and prayed that Chris would wake up and now it was like someone had finally heard me.

Part of me was still in disbelief.

I needed to see Chris. Once I could see the whites of his eyes, I knew that my worry would finally dissolve.

But, I will say that the moment Dr. Fairmont came into view, a lot of the tension in my muscles was immediately released. She greeted us with a smile that allowed a soft breath of relief.

“Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Derek. I take it you got the notification,” she noted.

I eagerly nodded my head. “Yes, is it true?”

The older woman nodded her head. “Indeed, your brother came around late afternoon. We had to make sure that he wasn’t going to slip into another spell. Once we were comfortable enough to let him rest on his own, we only went on to make sure his vitals were where they should be. Both his blood pressure and his heart rate are strong.”

“Can we see him?” James asked.

Dr. Fairmont nodded and waved us off.

My God, I was filled with excessive excitement. It was as though I were a child waking up on Christmas morning. We rounded the corner and headed into Chris’ room.

My knees wobbled and my heart jumped into my throat the moment I saw him. Chris was lying back against a small pile of pillows, looking as weak and tired as he would after one of his excavations.

His voice came out rough and strained. “Hey, Mia.”

“Chris,” I whispered.

I was overwhelmed by the amount of different emotions that were fighting to come out. The corners of my eyes flooded with tears. My feet carried me over toward the bed and I carefully wrapped my arms around him.

“I thought you’d never wake up. I kept hoping and waiting. I tried to come by every day but...”

“It’s alright,” he hushed. “The doctors tell me that I’m going to be just fine. I may need to stay an extra day or two just so they can be one hundred percent sure that there’s nothing wrong.”

I was beyond glad to hear that Chris was going to make a full recovery.

“Chris, do you remember the incident?” James questioned firmly.

He sighed and lightly shook his head. “Not really. Believe me, for the last couple of hours, that’s all I’ve been trying to do. One moment I was searching through a pile of my texts and the next thing I knew, I felt a sharp pain shooting through the back of my head. And then...Everything went dark.”

“One of your team members, Philip, told us that a suspicious-looking character had been tailing you for the duration of your trip. James and I are under the impression that the guy who was told to follow you—attack you—was sent by Edward Derek.”

Chris’ brows raised in surprise, although his initial startlement gradually morphed into smugness. “Well, he failed in his attempt.”

“Philip told us about your search,” I pointed out. “Chris, why didn’t you tell me what you were doing?”

His cheek slightly flushed while he lifted his hand to scratch at the back of his neck. “Your whole life you’ve always felt inadequate to others because of this disability that no one could ever solve or fix. I knew there had to be something...”

“Did you know the truth about Mom and Dad when they died—how they died?”

Chris lowered his head. “I’ve had my speculations over the years, but no one has ever given me a straight answer. I heard somewhere that mom had been poisoned when she was still pregnant with you. I’ve been trying to do everything in my power to research every possible poison known to man, including its effects. I’d hoped to find the one closest to your case. And I finally did.”

“Moon Tear.”

Chris nodded. “It originates from Egypt and is considerably rare. But the cure, oddly enough, is quite common.”

“What is the cure?”

“Honey, believe it or not.”

My jaw went slack. Had that been the only reason why my wolf had been making such brief appearances?

“I take honey in my tea all the time...Could that be the reason why my wolf has been trying to come out?”

“Could very likely be the case,” Chris answered. “Honey acts as the antidote for the poison directly on site. But for someone in your case, who was born under the influence of the poison, you need to be taking honey at least once daily to help along the waking cycle for your wolf. With the help of the honest along with other stimulations, your wolf could become fully awakened.”

‘As if this day couldn’t get any better,’ I thought joyously.

From James’ proposal to Chris’ waking up—but to find out that there was a real chance that I could fully regain my wolf was taking things to a whole new level.

I never imagined that such a thing could be possible. It felt like a revelation.
