Chapter 69
Sebastian's POV
Jack Abbott studies everything I’ve given him. He sits across from Evelyn, Ava and I in our apartment, looking through each page carefully.
It took a lot of outlining, but ultimately, Evelyn’s plan is perfect for this. As long as Jack’s on board with his findings, and things go right, all of this will finally get resolved.
“I hope you know the possible danger you’re putting yourselves in,” he deadpans.
“I think the real danger is William going around committing these crimes,” Evelyn answers with her eyebrows narrowed. “He tampered with Seb’s car, he’s tried to do horrible things like threaten to blow me up, and he’s the one who got his team to go against him.”
Jack bobs his head back and forth. “And I don’t question his involvement in any of that. Bank and phone records, pings from cell towers and a long timeline follow that man.”
“So, then you have enough to go to the police,” she insists.
“No,” Jack sighs. “Not exactly. We can go to the cops with all of this, but unless there’s a confession, I know any lawyer will easy laugh this case out of a courtroom.”
I grit my teeth, knowing this was what I was afraid of.
“That’s why we have a plan,” Ava reminds us. “So, we can get him arrested.”
“You still have your buddies on speed dial?”
Jack smirks at this, waving his phone at me. “Hopefully, the cops will allow your scheme to take place.”
Evelyn looks between all of us. “There’s really nothing left to do but this. They can be in on the plan, but we’re the one who’ll execute everything.”
So, Jack calls his friends at the NYPD, explaining what he knows, what he’s found, what they’re thinking, and what the plan we’ve come up with is.
We get to work on the set up, meeting with the police to get everything prepared. Ava will be the one who actually talks to William, where she’ll allege things have gone sideways with Sebastian. This should help her be able to confront the man and bring up everything he did.
“Your job is just to get Mr. Pearson to squeal on himself,” the male detective instructs, setting up the wire under her clothes to make sure every word is heard.
“You’ve grown sick of Sebastian and me. You think you’re still being lied to, and you want your own revenge,” Eve starts.
Jack nods along. “What we need is him stating out loud that his involvement isn’t up for discussion. Bring up the tampering with the brakes. Tell him you heard about the kidnapping but want to take it further.”
“Just in case, what do I do if he doesn’t believe I’m on his side?” Ava’s slipping her bra back into place after the wire ran up her back.
“Convince him. Apologize, maybe even do a bit of flirting.”
I laugh. “That man thinks with his dick first.”
Evelyn’s nodding, pacing as we keep going. “Let’s hope for our sake he can keep it in his pants before he’s handcuffed.”
“We have the physical proof, but we don’t have a motive on the bastard. So, anything you can get about why he’s doing this? That’s important. And there will be cops everywhere who’ll be listening to the same conversation,” the female cop assures Ava.
“Now, the plan begins with texting William.”
Ava doesn’t hesitate, making sure she’s typed it out perfectly before sending the text to William.
The message sends out, the whoosh in this small space seemingly deafening this entire room.
“I’ll get the group prepped for the location,” the female cop tells us before leaving.
“You’re sure you wanna do this?” Evelyn is clearly nervous, shaking as Ava puts on her sweater and her winter coat.
“I don’t think that bastard should get to do whatever he wants in this life. He already tried to kill you both twice. That’s enough for me.”
“You’re a remarkable woman, Miss Remington,” the male cop smiles. “I’m going to meet up with the rest of the squad for the debriefing.”
Jack says he’s going to go check something as well, so now it’s just the three of us. I see Evelyn’s worries, but Ava and I both try to assure her we’ll be okay.
“You really think that we’ll catch him in a confession?”
Rolling my eyes, I put a hand on Evelyn’s shoulder and say, “I’ve known this idiot for long enough to know people like him will look for any chance to gloat and seem like the smartest in the room.”
“It might take a little since I’m the one who told about the breaks.”
“But that doesn’t mean William will see any of this coming.”
It’s an hour before her phone finally pings back, Ava telling the entire room of cops where we’ll be going.
“He wants to meet at Unwind Underground.”
The first male cop nods. “We’re sending people out now. We’ll get plain clothes cops in there, and unmarked police cars waiting in the parking lot.”
From there, Ava sets off. Evelyn and I aren’t allowed to interfere, but I’m not walking away while that filth is out there.
“We’re not staying here to wait,” I demand to Jack.
“You can’t get involved, Sebastian, you know that.”
“What about if we sit with the guys who’ll be listening to Ava’s microphone?” Evelyn tries, raising a good point. “Then we can also confirm what’s real and not.”
“I’m alright with that.” It’s one of the other police officers. There’s so many around here it’s hard to remember anyone’s name.
Jack looks at my girlfriend, then at me. “Don’t let me hear you ran into battle to protect your honor or whatever. Stay in the van with the police.”
I grasp Evelyn’s hand, squeezing it so she knows I’m right next to her.
“Let’s go get him.”
We’re parked half a mile from Unwind. The security cameras are being fed to the cops we’re sitting with. The one, Mack, has his headphones on to be listening to everything he can catch. The other, Rodger, is fixing some of the settings on the machine.
Evelyn and I are handed a pair of headphones each.
Ava is currently waiting for William, hiding out in a more secluded area so they’re not seen. But the cameras have eyes on everything.
Finally, after what’s felt like eternity, the walkie-talkie buzzes. “We have visual contact on Mr. Pearson. Group one, on the right, group two, heading inside.” This is their chief talking, who’s also involved. To keep him safe, he’s in his car parked right outside the track.
“Copy that, Ava, are you ready?” Mack says, speaking into Ava’s tiny earpiece.
“Ready,” she whispers back.
Rodger hits the record button, slaps his hands together and nods. “Showtime.”
