El jefe de Zoé no iba a dar su brazo a torcer. Para él si no generaba ganancias, no volvían a trabajar. No le importó saber que la chica necesitaba dinero, estaba despedida y ya.

Dicen que todo lo cura el tiempo, pero para Zoé no fue así jamás.

A ella parecía que le llovía sobre mojado, puesto que el mismo día que perdió su trabajo encontró sus cosas afuera de su apartamento. Cuando quiso entrar descubrió que la llave había sido cambiada.

«¿Que mas puede pasarme?» Pensó en ese momento.

«Todo», quiso responderse, pues su madre le llamó para decirle que necesitaba del dinero que le enviaba todos los meses para subsistir la medicación de su padre.

Quería darse por vencida. Poder decirle que no lo tenía, que había perdido su trabajo por no dejar que le faltaran el respeto, que estaba sin donde dormir también, pero no pudo. Guardó ese nudo en su garganta y sonrió como si todo estuviera bien.

__ El pago se me retrasó unos días, mami. Si puedes pedirlo prestado, es mucho mejor. Te lo pasaré en diez días como máximo.

Negociar siempre fue lo suyo. Aunque ser una traductora también, el cual había sido la carrera que abandonó para poder trabajar, entre otras cosas que tuvo que aprender con cursos en línea en el tiempo libre que podía tener.

__ Creo que mi vecina puede prestarme. — dijo su madre a la vez que le informó de la mejoría que su padre había tenido.

Esas eran buenas noticias para Zoé. Tanto como para su madre, era la única de sus hijos que se esforzaba por acompañar a sus padres, puesto que su hermano mayor se había olvidado de ellos por completo.

__ Bueno mami, te dejo, mi jefe me está llamando. — se excusó la chica que sonrió ligeramente para apaciguar la preocupación de su madre por ella.

Solo quería quitarle peso a sus problemas porque para Zoé, los de otros, en ocasiones tenían más gravedad que los suyos.

Pero en ese momento sí quiso llorar. Desahogarse por primera vez, lo necesitaba tanto que le pareció una buena opción, pero no se lo permitió, de nuevo. No siquiera había un lugar donde encerrarse para que nadie la viera hacerlo.

Solo tenía 167 dólares en su bolso, quizá otros 200 en su tarjeta, pero no era suficiente. No lo era ni de cerca.

Observó sus cosas cubiertas por una de sus mantas y se preguntó qué podría vender o que conservar.

En ese punto de su vida, solo requería dinero.

Recordó a algunos de sus vecinos que siempre le preguntaron por algunas cosas que ella tenía y supo que podría sacar algo de ahí, a la vez que aminorar lo que debía cargar era algo esencial.

Ofreció todo lo que consideró vendible. Aunque con las rebajas que tuvo que hacer, solo logro juntar poco más de quinientos, siendo que al comprarlas fueron más del doble. Pero no pensaría más en eso, solo la haría ver el fracaso que le hicieron pensar que podía ser.

Cargó las cajas entre sus manos, ya que pagar un taxi era algo que por el momento no podía permitirse. Caminó y caminó lo que sus pies la dejaron, lo único rescatable era que no había llovido. Odiaba los días lluviosos, siempre traían melancolía a su vida y por ello no eran de su agrado. Sobre todo en ese momento.

Retrocedió cuando en la entrada de un casino o "lugar de mala muerte" como su madre los había catalogado, estaba un anuncio de "se necesita empleada"

«¿Será mi destino que empieza a mejorar?» se dijo esperanzada en que la respuesta fuera un positivo. No era un lugar donde supiera moverse, lo tenía claro.

Aún así, dejó las cajas en el suelo y arregló su imagen, un poco al menos. Ensayó su sonrisa y volvió a levantar las cajas para buscar a alguien que la atendiera, aunque todo se veía vacío. Salvo por la chicas que limpiaban.

Le preguntó a una y a otra por quien era el encargado y todas coincidieron en su respuesta. Bajaría luego de unos minutos.

Esperó un poco, aburriendose luego de un momento en el mismo lugar donde no sabía que hacer. Se sintió fuera de lugar, pero no podía irse sin saber si la contratarían.

Un hombre vestido de traje salió de una puerta con un par de documentos en las manos, Zoé se apresuró a él y lo abordó directamente alegando estar en ese lugar por el anuncio del trabajo.

__ Sí, entiendo. Solo que no es conmigo con quien debe tratar. — justificó el sujeto.

__ ¿Como no? ¿Acaso no es el jefe? — preguntó ella.

El tipo no tuvo tiempo de responder cuando Rafael, en voz alta maldijo. Pateó el par de cajas que lo habían hecho tropezar, ese no había sido su mejor día y caerse por culpa de algún inepto que dejó cosas espacidas por su camino solo empeoró su humor.

__ ¡Quiten este estorbo de aquí! — soltó en un rugido que tensó a muchos que ya conocían su carácter poco paciente.

__ ¡Oigame!, Deje de ser tan delicado. Hay mejores maneras de hablar. — le discutió Zoé. — Maleducado.

Rafael se quedó en silencio viendo como una desconocida lo estaba regañando, peor aún, ¡frente a sus empleados! ¿Que atribuciones pensó que tenía para hablarle así?

__ ¿Y quien se cree para hablarme de esa manera!

__ Una persona amable. — se veía realmente molesta. - No amargada como usted. Insolente.

Rafael solo entornó los ojos.

__ Hay gente insoportable y luego usted. — refunfuñó ella.

El hombre de treinta años le dió una mirada llena de hastío, si se quedaba más tiempo no sabía lo que saldría de su boca, así que prefiero ignorar antes de pasar de ella.

¿Quien se creía esa mujer ahí? Hablarle de esa forma no era modo de referirse a él.

Por ello, la dejó atrás ignorando por completo lo ocurrido. Tenía asuntos más importantes que tratar que quedarse a discutir con una insignificante, se dijo.

Zoé respiró y quiso alcanzar al hombre de antes, ya que ese empleo debía ser suyo a como diera lugar. Entró a la misma puerta donde lo vio cerrarla y sin pedir permiso, cruzó el umbral, arrepintiéndose de inmediato al ver al sujeto maleducado estar sin camisa, Rafael se la había quitado porque alguien le había tirado comida encima y no tenía tiempo de ir hasta su casa, pero no esperó que la misma mujer irrumpiera su lugar privado.

__ Lo lamento, solo vine a buscar a tu jefe, creo. —añadió dándose la vuelta para darle más privacidad, según ella. —¿Viste que se hizo?

__ Puede salir, por favor. — Rafael se contuvo para no ser más grosero.

__ Sí, solo necesito hablar con tu jefe. — añadió de nuevo.

El hombre estaba a punto de perder la paciencia. Le sacaba de quicio el entrometimiento de las personas y con alguien desconocido, aún peor.

__ El que no desea...

__ ¡Señor, al fin! — el rostro se le iluminó a Zoé al ver a quien buscaba.— Quería hablar con usted sobre el trabajo de...

__ Señorita, ya le dije que no soy quién decide eso. — justificó él. — Lo trata directamente con el jefe.

__ Entonces lléveme con su jefe. — pidió ella.

__ Ahí lo tiene. — apuntó el sujeto al hombre que sostenido de su escritorio y sin camisa la observaba con un gesto fríamente y lleno de hastío. A Zoé se le erizó la piel y las esperanzas se le cayeron al piso.
