La ansiedad apretaba mi corazón, estrujándolo hasta que pensé que iba a vomitar o desmayarme. Miré el espejo en la sala de descanso. Una maraña de púrpura y negro palpitaba sobre mi cabeza mientras sostenía el teléfono en mi oído.

—¿Quién diablos era esa? —exigió Lily, pero yo estaba tan a oscuras como ella.

—Probablemente solo una clienta en el bar —le dije. Tenía que ser eso. Confiaba completamente en Robert.

—¿Qué hizo esta vez? —preguntó una voz detrás de mí. Salté y me giré para encontrar a Cathy mirándome con furia. Hice una mueca al ver el vórtice de neón naranja sobre su cabeza. Estaba extremadamente molesta.

—No hizo nada. Solo estaba ocupado en el trabajo —dije suavemente, esperando calmarla. Pero Cathy era muy protectora conmigo y no le gustaba Robert.

—Claro. Si tú puedes hacer turnos dobles durante dos semanas seguidas para comprar estos boletos de crucero, lo mínimo que él podría hacer es darte algo de su precioso tiempo, Almara —espetó Cathy y yo me estremecí. Pero, ¿qué más podía haber hecho? Era para su cumpleaños y yo acababa de graduarme de la universidad. Tampoco es que viniera de una familia adinerada.

—Él no me obligó a hacerlo. Quería hacerlo. Me gusta hacer cosas bonitas para las personas que me importan —le sonreí, tratando de convencerla y convencerme a mí misma de que todo estaba bien.

Ella puso los ojos en blanco y chasqueó sus uñas de color rojo manzana de caramelo. —Bueno, estaré aquí para ti cuando te rompan el corazón. Te quiero, cariño —y con eso, volvió al restaurante.

El crucero era más magnífico de lo que podría haber imaginado. Brillaba de un blanco lunar bajo la luz del sol moribundo.

Había leído en alguna parte durante mi investigación para este viaje que el dueño era el multimillonario más joven y que la habitación más lujosa del barco estaba permanentemente reservada para él. No es que yo pudiera permitírmelo.

Las mangas largas ayudarían a combatir el frío del océano, pero el lino lo hacía transpirable. Era el vestido perfecto para un crucero y me sentía bonita por primera vez en mucho tiempo.

Me giré con una gran sonrisa en el rostro, esperando con anticipación mientras Robert se abría paso entre la multitud, su maleta rodante aplastando algunos dedos en el proceso.

Internamente me estremecí. A Robert le encantaba bailar y yo no tenía ningún ritmo, pero sabía que íbamos a estar allí.

—¡Definitivamente estaremos allí! —le dijo Robert mientras seguíamos a otro miembro de la tripulación hasta nuestra habitación.


El salón de baile era hermoso, pero no podía apreciarlo. Estaba demasiado concentrada en no torcerme un tobillo con los ridículos tacones que Robert había insistido en que comprara en la boutique del crucero. También me había hecho comprar un nuevo vestido amarillo limón con un escote pronunciado.

Podía sentir las miradas lascivas de los pasajeros masculinos y traté de ignorarlas lo mejor que pude. En cambio, me concentré en Robert y en cómo su rostro se iluminaba mientras miraba a su alrededor.

—¿No es genial, Almara? ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que fuimos a bailar? —preguntó emocionado, dirigiéndose directamente a la pista de baile donde las parejas ya se movían al ritmo de la música. Pensé que tocarían valses o algo similar, pero en su lugar estaban tocando música de discoteca.

—Ha pasado mucho tiempo —coincidí, pero por dentro pensaba que no había pasado suficiente tiempo.

Me atrajo hacia él, deslizando sus brazos alrededor de mi cintura mientras me guiaba en un baile sensual. Traté de seguirle el ritmo, moviendo mis caderas al compás, pero sabía que no era un movimiento fluido. Se sentía entrecortado y fuera de sincronía.

Pero a Robert no parecía importarle. Sus ojos estaban fijos en mi escote y una saludable dosis de rosa comenzó a extenderse por la nube amarilla sobre su cabeza. Lujuria. No había visto ese color en un tiempo.

Eso era fácil de decir para ella, pero yo nunca había tenido suerte en mi vida y sabía que las posibilidades de encontrar a mi compañero eran escasas. Además, los planes de boda ya estaban en marcha. Y, lo más importante, amaba a Robert.

Queriendo evitar un conflicto y arruinar nuestro viaje antes de que siquiera comenzara, decidí salir a tomar un poco de aire fresco.
