Chapter 5 At-fault Driver

Nydia's POV

A sudden touch made my whole body go weak, like an electric shock running through me.

I froze, not daring to move, but my senses became incredibly sharp.

A warm, soft tongue brushed over my ear, and the hot breath against my skin sent a tingling, wet heat straight to my heart.

I couldn’t help but tremble slightly, and the next second, I heard the man’s low chuckle.

It felt more like a taunt!

My face instantly burned with embarrassment. I snapped out of it, pushed him away with force, and raised my hand to slap him.

He was quick, grabbing my wrist and raising an eyebrow at me. “Need me to help you call the cops?”

I hadn’t forgotten that just earlier at the police station, the chief himself had personally escorted him out.

The station captain’s attitude toward him was unusually respectful. It was obvious at a glance that this guy’s background wasn’t ordinary.

Calling the cops would be pointless. The result would probably be the same as now, right?

I felt frustrated beyond words. I never imagined I’d end up entangled with such a difficult guy.

“No need,” I said, meeting his mocking, playful eyes and gritting my teeth. “I’ll just pretend I got bitten by a dog.”

Instead of getting angry, he laughed, clearly amused.

What a nutcase!

I didn’t want to keep dealing with him. I was afraid of getting into more trouble. Seeing that he wouldn’t let go, I decided to stomp on his foot.

As expected, he reacted quickly, but this move was just a feint. My real target was his crotch.

Now! I bent my knee and slammed it hard!

The jerk finally couldn’t handle both at once and let go of me.

I took the chance to turn and run.

After running a few steps, his voice came from behind, “Baby, remember, my name’s Vincent.”

Who cares what his name is?

Right now, I just wanted to get home and sleep properly.

Unexpectedly, when I pushed open the door at dawn, I found everyone there.

My parents were fussing over Olive, asking if she was okay, while Olive smiled sweetly and acted cute with them.

Gordon stood to the side, dotingly holding a glass of water, patiently coaxing Olive to take a sip.

What a warm, happy family scene.

No one noticed I’d come back.

But I was used to being ignored. Expressionless, I headed upstairs.

That’s when my father, Frank, finally saw me and called my name, “Nydia!”

I ignored him.

He raised his voice irritably and called again, rushing over to me in a few quick strides.

I looked at him, puzzled, and the next second, a slap landed on my face.

“How did you become so vicious? If I’d known you’d turn out like this, I should’ve strangled you the day you were born!”

The slap left my head spinning. When I came to, anger surged through me.

I held my face, glaring at him furiously. “Why did you hit me?”

“Your dad did the right thing!” My mother, Eileen, also pointed at me aggressively. “You went too far this time!”

I had no idea what I’d even done!

But it didn’t matter. When I saw Olive secretly smirking at me with a taunting look, I knew it was her doing again.

Before she could change her expression, my hand slapped hard across her face.

Eileen screamed in shock, “Nydia! What are you doing!”

What am I doing?

Can’t she see I’m slapping her?!

I grabbed Olive’s hair with one hand and slapped her face several times with the other.

Eileen went ballistic, shrieking as she and Frank rushed over, shoving me away hard.

I stumbled back a couple of steps, crashing into a chair. The impact felt like it nearly broke my waist, the pain so intense I couldn’t stand straight.

“Are you out of your mind?!” Eileen yelled at me in a rage, then turned to Olive with concern. “Oh my God! Olive… my poor girl! Are you okay? Don’t scare me!”

Frank shouted orders to the servants, “Get the first aid kit! And call the doctor over!”

Gordon, full of worry, crouched down in front of Olive, carefully checking her injuries.

I clutched my aching waist. When I looked up, this was the scene before me.

Even though it wasn’t the first time I’d been ignored, even though I’d stopped being the center of attention since Olive came into the picture.

But at this moment, as cold sweat dripped down my forehead and stung my eyes, I still felt wronged.

Frank glared at me , “Why did you hit your sister?”

I scoffed, “Then why did you hit me? I learned it from you. You hit me for no reason, so I hit her too!”

Frank didn’t think he’d done anything wrong, speaking confidently, “I hit you because you hired someone to run over Olive! Nydia, you’re getting more and more reckless. Now you’re even breaking the law! Is this how I raised you all these years?”

“I hired someone to hit her?” I thought of Olive’s car accident last night and sneered, “What proof do you have?”

Frank pointed at my nose, “You still won’t admit it! The driver who hit Olive already confessed. You paid him to do it!”

“Just one person’s word isn’t enough to convict me,” I said coldly. “I don’t admit to it.”

Frank was so mad he looked like he’d explode. “You did it, so why won’t you own up?”

I couldn’t be bothered to answer, just stared at him blankly as he raged.

“Dad, don’t get so upset you hurt yourself,” Olive said softly, trying to calm him. Then she looked at me, sighed quietly, and said sadly, “Nydia, if you really hate me this much, I can leave this house. I just hope you won’t fight with Mom and Dad over me.”

“The Meyer family will always have only one daughter—you.”

Her words sounded so nice. Olive always had a way with her mouth.

I staring at her face. “Fine, then leave right now!”

“What nonsense are you spouting!” Frank roared, “Don’t forget, Olive did you a huge favor!”

Yes.

Olive’s father died because of me. That’s the truth, and I can’t argue with it.

This incident became a heavy chain binding me.

I gave up my parents, gave up the love that was once mine, even gave up my boyfriend.

But they say it’s still not enough.

How is it not enough?

Seeing me stay silent, Frank scolded me again, “Apologize to Olive!”

I was beyond exhausted, but I still shook my head. “I won’t apologize for something I didn’t do.”

“Nydia!” Gordon, who’d been quiet until now, finally spoke up, sounding annoyed. “If you just apologize, Olive is so kind, she’ll definitely forgive you. Do you have to make this ugly and get the police involved to arrest you and throw you in jail?”

He’s no longer my Gordon.

He won’t take my side anymore.

My eyes stung with unshed tears.

I blinked hard, holding back the tears that threatened to fall. “Then call the cops!”
