"Elle avait humblement supplié Damian Hearst de l'épouser, mais après le divorce, elle et sa famille ont quitté le pays, honteux."

Ashley tenait une tasse de café près de la fenêtre d'un café du centre-ville. Les rayons du soleil lui piquaient les yeux.

Il y a six ans, elle était la vedette d'un mariage mondain qui faisait la une des journaux, enviée et adorée par beaucoup. Mais ce mariage, qui avait commencé avec tant de fanfare, n'a duré que trois ans. Pendant ce temps, elle a supporté le mépris de la famille Hearst et les abus émotionnels de Damian. L'héritière du groupe Astor, autrefois symbole de glamour et de richesse, a fini par vivre comme une domestique dans sa propre maison.

Il y a trois ans, par une nuit pluvieuse, elle s'est réveillée confuse dans le lit d'un homme qu'elle ne connaissait pas. Le lendemain, elle a reçu les papiers du divorce de Damian. Tout en prenant soin de sa mère souffrant de maladie mentale, elle a poursuivi ses études et travaillé pour obtenir à nouveau sa licence d'avocate. Durant de nombreuses nuits sans sommeil, elle a envisagé de céder à la lassitude; l'idée de tout finir en sautant d'un toit lui murmurait à l'esprit, un sombre témoignage des fardeaux de son existence.

Enfin, il y a deux mois, Ashley a reçu sa licence et a réussi à rentrer dans son pays d'origine.

Elle pensait que trois ans auraient suffi pour surmonter les misères du passé, mais ceux qui avaient assisté à son mariage avec Damian continuaient à faire des blagues sur elle dans son dos.

Elle voulait se retourner et argumenter, mais comme dit le proverbe, "Loin des yeux, loin du cœur." Pourquoi gaspillerait-elle son souffle?

Après trois ans, la marque de l'anneau sur son doigt avait depuis longtemps disparu, mais l'humiliation que Damian lui avait infligée n'avait pas diminué d'un pouce.

Ashley expira lentement. La chute de la famille Astor avait commencé à cause d'elle. Si elle n'était jamais tombée amoureuse de Damian, rien de tout cela ne serait arrivé.

La sonnerie abrupte du téléphone portable d'Ashley la sortit de sa rêverie. "Harold?"

"Ashley ! Où es-tu ? Un gros client arrive au cabinet d'avocats !"

L'un des fondateurs du cabinet Sky Balance, Harold Brin, qui était son ami et camarade de classe pendant ses années de doctorat, tremblait d'excitation à l'autre bout du fil.

Elle se ressaisit, "Je suis juste au café en bas."

"Dépêche-toi de monter ! Le client attend. Fais bonne impression !"

Leur cabinet d'avocats à Paris n'était pas très connu ; ils s'occupaient principalement de longues et compliquées affaires civiles qui ne rapportaient pas beaucoup.

Elle était sceptique quant au "gros client" de Harold.

"J'ai vraiment des doutes, Harold," répondit Ashley.

Harold ricana, "Hé, tu pourrais regretter d'avoir dit ça une fois que tu auras rencontré le client."

Après avoir rapidement rafraîchi son maquillage, Ashley retourna au 23e étage où se trouvait leur cabinet.

L'homme était assis de dos, sa silhouette mise en valeur par la coupe sur mesure de son costume noir, dégageant une aura distinguée et inaccessible. Rien qu'à son dos, on pouvait deviner son statut extraordinaire.

Elle s'approcha, "Bonjour, je suis Ashley."

L'homme se leva lentement, sa main droite sortant de sa poche pour ajuster sa cravate avec une nonchalance étudiée, "J'ai beaucoup entendu parler de vous, Ashley."

Cette voix profonde et froide résonna comme un coup de tonnerre, et instantanément, le visage d'Ashley pâlit. Sa main, lourde comme si elle pesait mille livres, resta suspendue entre eux, incertaine de se retirer ou de rester.

L'homme devant elle, admiré par beaucoup, n'était autre que lui !

Son ex-mari. L'homme qui l'avait plongée à plusieurs reprises dans l'abîme, qui l'avait regardée indifférent alors qu'elle était ridiculisée, qui avait volontairement terni sa réputation et l'avait dépouillée de tout ce qu'elle avait.

Elle avait dormi avec un serpent froid pendant trois ans, qui la blessait à ses moments les plus faibles. Ashley avait renoncé à sa dignité parce qu'elle l'aimait tellement, et il lui avait demandé avec mépris, "Ashley, comment peux-tu être si pathétique ?"

Pendant plus de mille jours, elle n'avait même pas pu se résoudre à le détester, même lorsque les douleurs de la faim la tenaient éveillée la nuit. Il lui avait fallu beaucoup de temps pour réaliser que le cœur de certaines personnes est comme la glace, incapable de chaleur, éternellement froid.

Le doigt d'Ashley tremblait légèrement, ressentant une certaine chaleur sur son front. Il lui fallut un moment pour rassembler les mots, "Damian Hearst, ça fait... longtemps."

La grande silhouette de Damian restait immobile, et ses doigts fins capturèrent délicatement ceux d'Ashley. Son attitude froide ne laissait rien transparaître, ni un rictus, ni un mépris évident. Il se contenta de laisser échapper un "Hmpf" sarcastique.

Son regard la ridiculisait, comme si elle n'était qu'un insecte tentant de sortir d'une poubelle.

Il serra sa main fermement, comme s'il voulait lui broyer les doigts. Une douleur aiguë traversa sa paume, et elle tenta de retirer sa main, "Veuillez prendre un siège, Monsieur Hearst."

Mais Damian restait ferme, ses yeux perçants cherchant à lire chaque émotion dans son regard.

Harold prit la parole, essayant d'apaiser la situation avec chaleur, "Ha-ha, Damian Hearst, voici l'avocate Ashley dont je vous ai parlé. Elle est peut-être nouvelle dans le domaine, mais elle est exceptionnellement compétente en litiges de brevets..."

Damian le coupa en plein milieu de sa phrase, n'ayant pas la patience pour les détails, ses yeux acérés fixés sur Ashley, "Je suis bien au courant de ses capacités."

"Nouvelle"? Il semblait qu'Ashley avait caché son passé.

Ne pouvant plus supporter la douleur, Ashley retira sa main brusquement, "Je ne peux pas prendre votre affaire, Monsieur Hearst. Comme vous le voyez, je suis novice, manquant d'expérience. Harold a plus de chances de succès."

Elle le refusait? Et avec une excuse aussi faible, en plus? La menteuse rusée d'autrefois, ses compétences régresseraient-elles maintenant?

Un petit sourire se dessina sur les lèvres de Damian, "Vraiment? Même une débutante comme Ashley devrait savoir ce que signifie rompre un contrat."

Il sortit un document net, son coin inférieur droit estampillé du sceau du cabinet d'avocats et de sa signature assertive.

Ashley se tourna mécaniquement vers Harold et lui demanda mot à mot, "Que se passe-t-il?"

Harold répondit avec un sourire rassurant, "Ashley, l'affaire de Damian Hearst est une victoire assurée. Je l'ai personnellement prise pour toi."

Le regard froid de Damian parcourut ses traits, prenant en compte la femme à la fois familière et différente devant lui. Elle semblait changée; la naïveté juvénile de l'ancienne Madame Hearst avait disparu, remplacée par une professionnelle raffinée vêtue d'un élégant costume d'affaires; l'incarnation de l'élite corporative moderne.

La seule chose qui n'avait pas changé chez elle était sa fierté obstinée et son indifférence glaciale.

"La pénalité est de trois millions de dollars. C'est bien si vous choisissez de ne pas accepter, mais avant la fin de la journée..." Il jeta un coup d'œil à sa montre, "la pénalité doit être virée sur le compte de mon entreprise, au moins avant trois heures."

Un rire méprisant faillit échapper à Ashley alors qu'elle serrait les poings, répondant avec un ricanement sarcastique, "Damian Hearst, le chantage est un crime, tu sais. Ou as-tu besoin d'une leçon de droit ?"

Damian ouvrit négligemment le contrat, "Tout est là, noir sur blanc, un accord mutuel. Ashley, tu vois vraiment ça comme du chantage ?"

"Mademoiselle Astor..." Damian s'approcha d'Ashley, sa voix moqueuse, audible seulement pour elle, "Je me souviens de ta débrouillardise. Quelques nuits de plus dans les lits d'hommes différents, trois millions ne devraient pas être trop difficiles à obtenir, non ?"

Ashley voulait le gifler sur-le-champ ! Pensant au prix qu'elle avait payé pour un mariage voué à l'échec dès le départ.

À cause de lui, son père se courbait encore pour frotter des pneus dans une station de lavage ; à cause de lui, sa mère, autrefois une dame élégante, avait vieilli prématurément sous le poids de l'inquiétude ; à cause de lui, elle avait dû endurer l'humiliation en servant des tables...

Serrant les poings plus fort, Ashley réprima sa douleur et afficha un léger sourire, "Pas tout à fait aussi capable que Damian Hearst cependant. D'un simple geste, tu as réussi à révoquer ma licence de droit et ruiner ma carrière. En matière de compétence, qui peut rivaliser avec Damian ?"

Damian renifla avec dédain, "Une avocate qui n'est qu'une menteuse ? Tu te crois apte à la profession ?"

"Alors, tu as fait tout ce chemin juste pour te battre et me montrer tes procès ? Quoi, tu as encore des sentiments non résolus pour moi, ou tu abuses de ton pouvoir pour des gains personnels ?"

Son regard méprisant balaya sa chemise dont le bouton du haut s'était défait, ses lèvres presque une ligne droite, "Pour quelqu'un qui a fait le tour du quartier, je trouve ça écœurant rien qu'en le regardant."

La fureur monta en elle, presque prête à lâcher des mots vulgaires, mais son professionnalisme et ses expériences passées avec la famille Hearst l'aidèrent à maintenir un contrôle émotionnel parfait, "Donc tu es ici pour discuter de collaboration avec moi parce que tu cherches des ennuis par ennui ?"

Harold ne pouvait pas entendre leur échange, mais l'atmosphère oppressante, surtout autour de Damian, était palpable.

Il voulait dire quelque chose, n'importe quoi, pour briser la tension, mais après avoir pesé ses mots, il n'osa pas.

Damian remit sa main dans sa poche, se tenant droit et regardant de haut, sa voix montant, "Ravi de faire affaire avec toi, Ashley !"
