Osprey (Primer año de secundaria)

Salí del gimnasio después de cambiarme de nuevo a mi ropa de escuela desde mi uniforme de práctica. Me giré para ver que ella había corrido hacia nosotros. Sus ojos brillaban de emoción y su pecho en desarrollo se agitaba mientras jadeaba.

—Osprey, nosotros...

Olfateé la excitación de Silver por ella en el aire. Me volví hacia él.

—Vuelve al auto —gruñí mientras lo miraba con furia.

—¿Osprey? ¿Qué pasa?

Cuando ella tocó mi espalda, vi la curiosidad encenderse en los ojos de Silver.

—Entonces, ella es tu novia —dijo con risa en su voz.

—¿Novia? No soy su novia. Somos parientes —respondió suavemente.

Aparté su mano mientras me lanzaba sobre él. Mi puño conectó con su mandíbula, y me froté los nudillos mientras me paraba sobre él de manera amenazante.

—Ella está fuera de límites —le dije.

Se sentó, sosteniendo su mandíbula.

—¡Haré que te echen del equipo! —amenazó.

—Entonces haz que me echen del equipo. No me importa. Incluso si no me echan, ve si te bloqueo.

Agarré el brazo de Scarlett antes de arrastrarla hacia el auto. Ella luchó en mi agarre, pero seguí avanzando.

—Osprey, para. Me estás lastimando —lloró.

Ella se deslizó hacia atrás mientras miraba por la ventana, sin responder a mi pregunta por un rato.

—Si te lo digo, ¿te vas a enojar conmigo?

Su pregunta me puso tenso, y quería golpear algo. Otra vez.

—No me voy a enojar contigo.

Ella tomó mi mano con vacilación, y de inmediato me relajé.

—Un chico me sostuvo la puerta y se sentó conmigo en el almuerzo.

Mis dedos se apretaron alrededor de los suyos.

—¿Quién fue? —pregunté, tratando de parecer despreocupado mientras estaba hiperconcentrado en su respuesta para saber a quién tendría que lastimar mañana cuando la acompañara a la escuela.

—Justin —susurró.

Maldije en voz baja. El hijo de la tía Tara. Mierda. Esto apestaba. Odiaba no estar en la misma escuela que ella. No podía interponerme entre ella y quienquiera que pensara que podía desviar su atención de mí.

—¿Te gusta él? —pregunté, necesitando saber cómo se sentía ella sobre él.

—No, tonto —rió—. Somos familia. Eso es raro.

Estudié su perfil.

—¿Yo también soy familia?

Ella se sonrojó más mientras intentaba retirar su mano de la mía.

—Quiero decir, técnicamente, sí. Mi hermano es tu padre adoptivo, y tu hermana es mi sobrina y...

—¿Te gusto?

Mi vínculo con Raúl se abrió. «Osprey, ¿qué estás haciendo?»

Lo ignoré mientras esperaba su respuesta.

—Sí, me gustas —dijo casi en silencio.

—Bien —respondí con satisfacción—. Tú también me gustas.

Nos quedamos en silencio, permaneciendo así hasta que llegamos frente a su casa en el pueblo. Salí para acompañarla hasta su puerta. Ella se movió nerviosamente antes de mirarme.

—¿Cómo estuvo tu día? —preguntó, y supe que solo era una excusa para hacerme quedarme un poco más.

Me apoyé en la barandilla del porche.

—Estuvo bien. Te extrañé todo el día.

Ella se sonrojó de nuevo, y solo una persona ciega se habría perdido la felicidad en sus ojos.

—¿De verdad?

—Sí. ¿Puedo acompañarte a la escuela por la mañana?

—¡Sí! —chilló antes de lanzarse a mis brazos.

La sostuve cerca de mi cuerpo mientras inhalaba su aroma. Diosa, olía a cielo. Nunca había ansiado tanto el aroma de la canela antes de que ella llegara a la pubertad.

—Osprey, debemos irnos. Tu madre nos está esperando.

A regañadientes la solté y esperé a que entrara antes de volver al coche. Raúl suspiró tan pronto como la puerta se cerró.

—No sé si te hablo más como padre o como hermano mayor, pero...

Lo miré a los ojos en el espejo.

—Entonces no me hables como ninguno de los dos.

Golpeó el tablero.

—No le hagas esto a ella. Es humana y se destrozará cuando encuentres a tu compañera. Rompe esto ahora antes de que empeore. Tú sabes más sobre relaciones, hijo. Ella es tan inocente. Déjala que siga así. No la lastimes.

—¿Me estás tomando el pelo, papá? No hay nada entre nosotros. Somos familia —dije amargamente.

Un gruñido retumbó en su pecho.

—¡Ni siquiera intentes esa mierda conmigo! ¡Me senté aquí y los vi a los dos! ¡Deja de jugar con ella! ¡Lo digo en serio!

—¿O qué? ¿Qué vas a hacer? —desafié.

—¡Le diré a tu madre! Esto no es gracioso, Osprey, y seguro que no es un juego.

Lo miré con furia.

—¿No crees que lo sé? —grité—. Estás equivocado sobre lo que piensas que está pasando. Ella es mi mejor amiga, y solo quiero protegerla.

Él rodó los ojos.

—Dije lo mismo sobre tu madre, y ahora ella es mi compañera. Guarda esas mentiras para alguien que no te conozca, Osprey.

Se detuvo frente a nuestra casa, y me quedé allí un momento, tratando de calmarme.

—Entonces, ¿qué quieres que haga, papá? —pregunté fríamente.

—Quiero que te alejes de ella. Déjala crecer y encontrar a alguien a quien pueda amar. No podrá hacerlo contigo en su cara. Necesitas concentrarte en encontrar a tu compañera. No te queda mucho tiempo antes de que seas lo suficientemente mayor para saber quién es tu compañera cuando la veas o lo veas.

—Sí, él —murmuré con enojo—. ¡Está bien! Me alejaré de ella. —Salí del coche antes de inclinarme para mirarlo de nuevo—. Puedes explicarle por qué no estoy cerca.

Cerré la puerta de golpe y corrí directamente a mi habitación, ignorando los llamados de mis otros padres. Caminé de un lado a otro, tratando de encontrar una salida a este lío. No debería haber golpeado a Silver. Debería haber controlado mejor mis emociones en lugar de desquitarme. Mis acciones apuntaban al hecho de que me importaba más ella que solo como un miembro de la familia. Me senté en el borde de mi cama con las manos entrelazadas detrás de mis muslos.
