Chapter 32
Olivia'sPOV
Ethan and I sat across from each other in his office, the atmosphere thick with the anticipation of the upcoming Council vote.
If we weren’t going to complete the Mating bond, we needed to present an even more united front if we wanted to win the support of more Alphas.
Ethan leaned forward, tapping his pen on the paper. “We need events that feel genuine,” he said, his tone calm but purposeful. “Not just formalities. Something casual to show we’re grounded and strong.”
I nodded, considering our options. "How about a BBQ?” I suggested. “It’s relaxed, and Pack members could bring their families. It would give the Alphas a chance to see how Ethan Blackford cares for his Pack and community.”
Ethan’s eyes lit up with approval, a hint of a smile tugging at his lips. “Exactly what I was thinking. A BBQ would give everyone a chance to connect naturally. Plus, it’s harder for Aiden’s people to criticize us if it’s informal.”
“Agreed,” I replied, feeling a surge of relief that, for once, we seemed in sync. “We can keep it low-key, but still make it clear we’re serious about gaining their support.”
Ethan scribbled a few notes, his energy focused and determined. “Let’s go with the BBQ. I’ll handle the logistics, but I’ll need you to help coordinate with Marlus and Mia to invite everyone. Make it feel inclusive.”
Our eyes met briefly, and I felt a strange surge of pride and unity as we ironed out the details together.
The BBQ was in full swing, the delicious scent of grilled food filling the air with laughter and chatter around the yard. Members from various Packs milled about, catching up and swapping stories.
I missed the comforting hum of a low-key Pack social. The turnout was impressive, with families and Alpha Council members alike mingling around picnic tables and fire pits.
I stood by the food station, offering plates and friendly smiles.
A familiar voice pulled me from my thoughts, and I turned to see Matthew walking over, a charming smile lighting up his face.
“Olivia,” he greeted, a teasing glint in his eyes as he leaned a little closer than necessary. “I’m pleased to see you as the hostess today. Is this your way of showing the Packs how well you can throw a party?”
I laughed, though his closeness made my heart flutter unexpectedly. “Something like that,” I replied, keeping my tone light. “It’s all part of the job.”
“Maybe,” he murmured, his gaze lingering on mine. “But I think you’re more than just ‘a job,’ I think you’re brilliant.” His voice dropped to a low murmur, and the warmth in his eyes was unmistakable.
A twinge of uncertainty tugged at me. His attention felt flattering, but it carried a dangerous weight, especially in the open like this. I felt like Matthew saw through the façade of my position, straight to the insecurities I was trying so hard to bury.
Matthew stepped closer, his heady scent a warm, earthy mix of rain and sandalwood.
“Being here suits you,” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. “I knew you’d be an incredible Luna. But seeing you here, surrounded by all these people… it’s even more than I’d imagined.”
I felt a flush creep up my neck, and before I could respond, he gently lifted his hand, as though about to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear; he stopped just short.
“I wonder if Ethan realizes how lucky he is, having you as Luna,” he continued, his gaze steady, unwavering.
His undivided attention made me feel exposed. I swallowed, pushing down the fluttering in my chest. “I appreciate that, Matthew,” I replied, keeping my voice light.
Ethan’s presence seemed to suddenly shift nearby; his hard gaze fixed on us like a predator preparing to strike.
Matthew took notice, casting a sidelong glance at Ethan, a hint of defiance in his eyes. I caught my breath, realizing that this wasn’t just a friendly conversation; Matthew was subtly testing the boundaries.
“Matthew,” I said softly, keeping my tone even as I forced a smile. “This isn’t the place for… personal discussions.”
He gave a soft laugh, nodding as he stepped back. “Of course, Luna.” But his gaze lingered just a second too long before he accepted the plate and walked away.
As he disappeared into the crowd, I felt the tension that had gripped my chest ease slightly, but Ethan’s presence loomed behind me. I didn’t have to turn to know he was still watching.
His frustration was a palpable, silent reminder that we were always under scrutiny.
I drew in a shaky breath, wondering just how many cracks Matthew’s presence would create in my carefully constructed walls.
Mia cornered me in the kitchen as I was cleaning up, her face set with a look I knew all too well. She leaned against the counter, crossing her arms and narrowing her eyes at me.
"Liv," she began, her tone firm. "How can you not see that hottie Doctor’s interest is… not purely professional?”
I bristled, though I shouldn’t be surprised at her bluntness. “Matthew is just being kind.”
She sighed, her eyes softening with concern. “Look, I’ve seen the way he looks at you, and… I don’t know. It just doesn’t feel right. Like he’s trying to get under Ethan’s skin.”
I scoffed, though a flicker of doubt started to creep in. “Even if he did look at me… that way… it is possible someone might like me for me and not what I can do for them. Matthew’s been supportive, Mia. He’s not involved in any Pack politics –”
“– Are you sure?” she pressed, cutting me off. “Because it seems like he’s well aware of how things stand between you and Ethan. And he’s not holding back from using it to his advantage.”
Her words hit me harder than I’d expected. The warmth I’d felt from Matthew, the easy comfort; was it really just that?
Or was Mia right and Matthew was somehow taking advantage of the tension between me and Ethan?
I forced a laugh, brushing off her concerns, but the uncertainty clung to me.
“I think you’re overthinking this, Mia. Matthew’s just… friendly.”
Mia shook her head, unconvinced. “Just be careful, Liv. I don’t want you to get hurt, or to lose focus. Ethan sure as hell is not perfect, but he’s… contractually there for you.”
Her reminder stung, and I felt the truth of it settle over me. I didn’t think I was making excuses for Matthew’s flirtation, but what if he was genuine?
There was definitely an attraction with Matthew and a tenderness I desperately craved.
Mia’s doubts left me wondering if I’d been blind to something right under my nose.
As much betrayal as I’d felt from my relationships, and as much as I was committed to the arrangement with Ethan, some small part of me still held out hope for Fated Mate love.
